Default Step Mom Pitched Title!!!!

Long story short, my step mom was cleaning house, and pitched the title to my Accord, the bill of sale, and the contact information I had for the guy I bought it from. And all of this before I registered the car.........I can't remember the contact info for the guy, so the only thing I can think of is to do a VIN lookup, and seeing that I am not a cop, I can't do this. So, I know that at least one of you on here is a cop, are you the right rank to be able to do it, or could you get someone else to look it up for me? I would forever be in your debt for my step mom's stupidity.

Are you sure you can't figure out how to contact him? Scroll back through your phone? Old Email? Craigslist ad still up? Old newspaper ad? Somebody that knew about the car/owner and hooked you up? If so, you can pay him $20 or whatever to take care of his time to go apply for a lost title and then he can write a new bill of sale.

The ad on craigslist is no longer there. And my phone decided it would be fun to reformat itself in the middle of my math course one morning last week, so the phone calls to him are erased. And since I bought the car more than a month ago, my phone bill records are gone, and I don't think I would recognize his number if I saw it. So all I can think of to do is get his information from looking up the VIN.

One last thought-did you pay cash or maybe a cashier's check from the bank? Otherwise, I think your only option is going to be the VIN.

Your bank should have a record of that. Go beg them to dig it up if you can come up with a date that is was issued. At least you will have a name and can do a reverse lookup on the net.

call your bank and ask for the name of a person who cashed the check!

That's a guess, but worth following up with a phone call.

You don't remember where you bought it from? I'm talking physical location. Did you meet at the guys house? I can tell you the name of almost all of the POs that I bought my cars off haha.

I bought it from somewhere like 20 minutes away from where I live, but that doesn't exactly narrow it down much....I remember where I bought my bike from, and that was in Illinois.

This is not as uncommon as you might think.
I'm pretty sure there is some statute of limitations for cases like this... where after a certain amount of time, if the car is not reported stolen, then you can apply for title to the car. The thing I believe is to contact the DMV now and tell them what your situation is... they may have a quick answer.

I don't know much about it, but isn't there some kind of archive system where you can search for all the old/deleted **** on the internet?

Someone who knows more should pitch in, it might be worth looking into.
