Still don't want an ACT Clutch? (SPEC FAIL)
4 Attachment(s)
This is what happen to a buddy of mine. I've posted his own words below. Racecar: ITS GSR - Age of clutch kit: 6 Races - Incident Lap No.: 1 This one is going to hurt the wallet........ When things go boom at 8000rpm in nascar turn 4 in Daytona the damage is alot. The pressure plate material decided it did not want to hold any longer and wanted out of the tranny. Don't buy a SPEC clutch / PP.. Attachment 211535 Attachment 211536 Attachment 211537 Attachment 211538 |
looks like foreign object damage to me. probably the starter.

I'm pretty darn sure that SPEC uses an OE flywheel. Mine looked exactly the same to the stock unit I pulled out.
Ouch, but I wouldn't let the failure of a clutch in a "race car" really decide for me what to use in my street car. A little difference in application. |
comparing a stock, clutchnet, centreforce and ACT PP...the only difference I could see was the rivet sizes and springs/diaphragms...the cast metal all look identical.

About 1yr ago I called Spec to get the lowdown on their manufacturing due to a problem with my StgII Kevlar. Spec uses either an OEM or Exedy PP and make some modifications (which he would not elaborate on) to match better to their in-house discs.
My problem turned out to be operator error during install with improperly tightened PP bolts. I've been boosting up to 15psi through my StgII 1.6 and COULD NOT BE HAPPIER SINCE I R&R'd THE PP AND RE-TIGHTENED THEM AT 10lb INCREMENTS. Stock (or easier) pedal feel and butter-smooth engagement. I would happily buy a Spec clutch again, but I will not be buying a Kevlar disc again... and there is a huge jump in performance and price between the Spec StgII and StgIII. I'll be going with ACT XTSS and be done with it. |
I was told by the folks at spec I could buy the Stage3 1.6 disc for $150. So if you are looking to upgrade this might be something to consider.

I'll keep my ACT thanks

Its scary though because I like my feet. |
When I drove from spec they'd send us some weird shit to test, for a while we had a serious issue with the clutch disks overheating and glueing themselves to the FW and PP.

I dont get why people keep makeing a big deal about these clutches.
I have a F1 racing stage 3 ceramic clutch. It has 15k miles, still holds and works perfect. I just took my time installing. |
i have a stage 2 act clutch and i love it. the pedal is stiff but very responsive. its got probably about 15k miles if not more, holds fine doesn't slip. when this eventually goes i'll be getting another act clutch.

That's what they make ZIP TIES for!
