A stock Miata is not stable at 95 MPH.

<Sarcasm> Aww man, these cars must really suck then. I really had higher hopes for my car, once I tuned it up. I guess I bought the wrong one.

There's some great advice happening in this thread. I'm glad I read it. </Sarcasm>

wes65 08-14-2008 02:14 PM

Stable how? Mechanically? Like not stable, youre going to run off the road? My car feels pretty good all the way to 140.

naarleven 08-14-2008 02:22 PM

There is something wrong with your car if it feels unstable at 95mph. Mine feels rock solid and at home at 95mph

ps. thats a pretty fucktard thread you linked.

olderguy 08-14-2008 02:28 PM

I don't know how many times I 've looked down and told myself I shouldn't be going over 110 and the car didn't feel like more than 70.

Someone needs an alignment.

I don't get it. You say these cars suck and then direct us to a thread which roundly refutes your allegation. So what exactly do you mean, and are you just making this up or do you actually have something to back this up? I have my doubts, but I’m willing to be entertained.

jayc72 08-14-2008 02:32 PM

Every time I see the username oilstain, my brain translates it to cumstain.

Machismo 08-14-2008 02:37 PM

Sounds like OP hasn't been able to push 95mph in his yet.....these cars don't suck, just yours. :jerkit:
I all seriousness, I would think that 150mph +/- is more appropriate for the statement. With the right aero and HP - maybe more.

oilstain 08-14-2008 02:52 PM

The thread title came from someone in the thread I linked. They also mention that you should wear a helmet at such speeds.

I posted it as another laugh at m.net thread.

I'll fix my original post...

naarleven 08-14-2008 02:54 PM

Hah okay okay much better.

I am a little disappointed, I thought the members here had a better appreciation of the beauty of sarcasm on the internet.

Bryce 08-14-2008 03:00 PM

Understood now. Sarcasm doesn't always work without a vocal inflection.

oilstain 08-14-2008 03:05 PM

LOL @ SamNavy!

"Yah! What's wrong with all you hooligans who want to play SpeedRacer on public roads. I agree with this guy. All cars should be equipped with GPS interference systems that automatically limit a car's speed to whatever the posted limit is. That'll make everybody a lot safer!"

I'm sure it will hit California first though, I'll have to wait years for this kind of safety...

y8s 08-14-2008 03:43 PM

stain: put quotes in your thread title maybe.

Good call, I'll do that next time. I'm not going to ask a mod to change the title now though, not really worth it.

On second thought, I should have just played along and defended the position that a Miata is completely unsafe at such incredibly irresponsible speeds...

And I did that....:giggle: The helmet being mentioned completely put it over the top for me. Sure, speeding is illegal (if caught)...but wearing a helmet on public roadways will definately get ya some flashing lights. :bowrofl:

Ask Arkmage about that, he knows by personal eperience, on multiple occasions. :giggle:

icantthink4155 08-14-2008 04:35 PM

mines like glass up to 80 much past that it gets the shakes. But I have yet to get it alligned and balanced so thats prolly why

I love m.net, you got 50 people say "Its fine the car loves to rev! Go at it!"
then you got one guy "oh god your going to explode and die in a fireball!"

"Sorry officer I was pretending to be the Stig"

johndoe 08-14-2008 05:01 PM

Alignment. My car has felt rock solid over 100 and twitchy over 80 depending upon alignment.

and in multiple states... I've been pulled over for it in MI, SC, and TX. MI twice.

bryantaylor 08-14-2008 06:25 PM

why? is it a crime to wear a helmet in a car?

curly 08-14-2008 08:51 PM

slamming on the brakes at 110mph for a chicane, then yes, it is a little sketchy at those speeds.

I read somewhere that someone with a v8 swab had a miata up around 180 and it was aerodynamically crap at those speeds. who knows what he had done aero wise though.

johndoe 08-14-2008 08:56 PM

Actually, he was only pulled over by the fashion police.:greddy:

An open top miata is aerodynamically crap at any speed, even standing still. Its co-efficient of drag is in the high 0.5's range compared to your average Toyota Camry which comes in at half that value, around 0.27 to 0.28.

cardriverx 08-14-2008 11:55 PM

With top down, its not that the car is unstable, its just twitchy, with my alignment little movements of the wheel translate into alot at that speed.

On my way to the NJ beach I did about 115 for like 3 seconds. The car friggin grabs EVERY crack in the road, and above 100 is when the front end just seems to get lighter and lighter...

I really would not want to be driving a stock body miata over 130 lol.

disturbedfan121 08-15-2008 01:41 AM

mine feels perfectly fine up to 100 at WOT, i usually dont go faster, but the times where i've hit 130 it felt decent. and my alignment is pretty crappy.

Bryce 08-15-2008 01:45 AM

It's all about caster and toe at the front wheels.

turbobluemiata 08-15-2008 02:08 AM

Still waiting for laws on helmets in street cars...?

Bryce 08-15-2008 02:13 AM

Yeah, seems to be against the law in at least every state Arkmage gets pulled over for it.

You are the man.... that's awesome. ;) Multiple times and in different states, makes that legendary status.
As far as helmets being illegal for passenger cars, I don't find any real why nots.
Sure vision is somewhat impaired, but those of us who wear them are already a step ahead with awareness.
Yes, it covers both ears, but todays stereos and quiet cabins are the same effect when it comes to hearing emergency vehicles. Bleh.
I think a full face helmet when combined with an airbag and typical seat belt may pose for some face fractures, but with proper restraints and a helmet - you are way better off.
With a high percentage of head injuries that occur in crashes on public roadways, I wonder why some litigator hasn't persued this further.
From what is written law wise, it seems awful gray (grey) to me.
I'm sure there is definitive info somewhere.....

hustler 08-15-2008 09:23 AM

I've ridden in an Atom on the street, with a helmet...rather than eat bugs.

Machismo 08-15-2008 09:31 AM

June bugs at 70mph FTL!

Ditto.

This (not mine) miata was stable the other day. Its completely stock.

boost 08-15-2008 06:19 PM

i've had mine maxed out at 120+mph and it honestly didn't feel unstable at all.* actually, if anything, it felt MORE stable when it got past 80.i have the front air dam on it though - when i put it on i noticed a difference.* feels like the front of the car gets sucked down with more speed.

Gotpsi? 08-15-2008 06:32 PM

As far as the helmet thing goes i drove around with my auto darkening welding helmet on once just to see what peoples reactions would be, It was everything i expected.

18psi 08-15-2008 08:35 PM

a welding helmet? HAHAHAH

SamS 08-15-2008 08:41 PM

I've been over 140 indicated once on an empty freeway and the car was wayyyyy more stable than I though it would be after reading about how unstable people say it is. No airdam, basically stock ride height.

johndoe 08-16-2008 10:26 AM

I'll reiterate alignment. If you've got zero toe or toe out with lots of camber and little caster the steering gets a little light at speed.

This is my experience. Above 100-110 the front end gets very light. All stock aerowise. Belly pan to bottom of bumper and top up. Top down 90 gets it fluttering.

tylerkun 06-23-2019 12:05 PM

I’m glad 2008 came to visit again.

samnavy 06-24-2019 10:20 PM

Holy shit... a month and a half shy of 11 years... I recommend temp-ban as a lesson to all.
