What the hell is sticking on the end of the turbine? Is this turbo part of some crazy volvo sequential setup?

That's a thought, but from some of the other pics it looks like that valve thing actually closes off the turbine outlet. Odd. Its one way to limit the power of your volvo. Those swedish cars are hellafast.

No wait, it is to increase engine braking, a safety feature only found on some higher end european volvos.

I used to work on turbo diesels w/ Engine brakes, I don't ever remember turbine housings like that (non-Volvo though).

You're correct it functions like a "wastegate" or engine brake, even though you can't really say they're the same thing, it does both so I've been told.

Is it out of a diisel? If so its probably used to brake the engine.
