I’m in the local Kragan yesterday. A girl storms in panicking. She’s a typical Santa Cruz tweaker-chick, strung out, probably 35 (looks 50), bad tattoos, trailer-blond hair, tight clothes, terrible body. Maybe you know the type?

She franticly approaches the young girl at the register, who looks like she barely speaks English, and shouts, “my car is leaking, leaking all over the ground (point, point) look, come look, it’s right here in the parking lot… leaking real bad.”

Duly manning her post like a dedicated employee, the clerk remains motionless but manages to articulate the word, “¿que?”

Tweaker says, “Well, do you have any oil or something?” [she’s in Kragen and she asked if they had oil]

“Yes, we have it. Ess on aisle 13, on sale.”

So at this point I’m moving around the store, closely watching this whackjob girl grab 3 qts of oil, a gallon of 80w gear oil and a gallon of Prestone. She plops it all on the counter, points to the jug of antifreeze and asks the clerk, “Is this the right one? I have a Durango...” Frustrated, and just shy of hysterics, the chick grits her teeth and scowls sternly at our 19-year-old-Mexican-American-mother-of-3-register-operator. Apparently mistaking the clerk for a mechanic, the tweaker just wanted the clerk to come out to the parking lot to inspect her car, which was bleeding coolant on an innocent parking block.

I headed outside so I could go peek at her ailing SUV up close. Then I stopped myself after coming to the conclusion that it would probably end badly. I chose not to help someone in need. I could have saved her the $12 she spent on gearlube (for her A/T Durango, btw) and I could have suggested going to the market next door to get a $1.50 gallon of water so she could limp to the mechanic who was six blocks away. But I kept my thoughts to myself.

I felt pretty bad for about 30 seconds but then I got over it. I’m not much of a humanitarian I guess.

Have you ever run into a situation where you could have very easily helped someone with car troubles but opted out?

You should have walked back into the store, bought pop-corn, gone back to your car and watched the hilarity ensue.

There are those who admit that they know nothing about cars, but camly asks for help and therefore deserves my time / effort. Then there are the truly hot once, which tends to be helped on pure mating instingt. The rest? See doppelgängers post.

You're right, she probably would've expected you to fix it right there in the lot. I've done a few side jobs for people, but I charge $50/hour and won't work on something I know will be a headache. Last time I did this my wife came home to find two rather attractive women in my driveway while I changed the front pads on her Civic.

I used to help but after a while I just can't believe what they will do. The way I see it if I fix it they won't learn anything. When their car breaks down and costs $$ to fix they will remember what they did wrong.

Along the same vein...

I drive a big 4x4 truck in the winter and always carry a tow strap. I have often pulled people out of the ditch when it snows and they go off of the interstate, etc. I never take money for it, as I don't need the laibility. Also, my rule is, the other person must hook up their end of the strap.

One day, I came upon a little car stuck in the median after he spun in. I don't recall, but it was a cavalier, or something. He was stuck pretty good. I asked him if he knew how to hook up the strap. He said yes. Hooked it up and I jerked him out. When I went back to retrieve my strap I saw antifreeze everywhere. He told me he must have overheated it spinning the tires trying to get unstuck. I agreed, quickly unhooked my tow strap from the radiator support where he had hooked it,:bang:and drove off.

What a Fuckin idiot! I guess that's what happens when you drive something that's "wrong wheel drive." I'm just glad to see the diminishing population of fart canned honda civic around here. People are starting to invest their money in respectible shit like G35's and LS1 Camaro's. I did pull up beside a guy with a hardtop S2000 the other day, and I gave my car a little throttle and slowly passed him, but looked in my rear view to notice a HUGE intercooler. So I was like, no wonder he didn't get on it....he knew that I knew I woulda got walked.

I woulda told her that I think her turn signals need an oil change, (and she wouldn't have even known WTF I was talkin about anyway), and I would've did the "good samaritan" and kindly let her radiator and engine oil drain (Into and environmentally save container of course) and watched her drive away, knowing that 3 miles down the hot steamy road, her engine would ceased faster than A REAL AMERCIAN at the OBAMA voting booth, and I woulda laughed at the mayhen that she would'nt even have been able to comprehend. I missed my best friend's high school graduation because I picked up a hitchhiker. I found out that she was a prostitute who was strung out on smack who had run away from her pimp. She asked me to take her to the hospital to start rehab and I sat there for 6 hours while the nurses refused to talk until they realized that I had picked her up off the street and was "uninvolved". I also once had a chick drummer audition for a spot in my band and I found out she was asthmatic and was susceptible to panic attacks. That one ended up in the hospital too and then started screaming at my bassist and I when we told her that we had locked her keys in her car with her drum equipment (she had asked us to do so 40 minutes prior). And then we left.

To mr 4x4- that is very nice of you and you live in a different part of the country where people aren't as prick-like but here in our parts in the dc area someone would probably sue you even if they broke their own car with your tow strap. My first car (mercedes 1979 450SLC) once broke down in the middle of 495 which is one of the most congested highways in the country after the fuel pump went out and the car backfired and I freaked out because I had my headphones on. I swerved and the long-wheel based car spun around twice and then stopped spinning while I was facing backwards, screeching along the road at 60mph with the grill of a semi in my face. I waved my hands franticly at mr. semi hoping for him to see me then the car spun around and rolled to a stop facing the right way, in the middle lane of the highway. Car wouldn't start since the fuel pump was dead and so I put on the blinkers. Cars were barely missing mine, and almost every single one was honking. Nobody even stopped or slowed down when I got out of the car and ran to the side of the road...

I dunno, some girls are just hysterical needy useless creatures and they should be left alone to dig their own graves.

I guess I just was a little pissed off and typed without thinking about offending anybody. I have been training this dude at work, and he hardly can understand english. It's just frustrating, cause I am responsible for him. So if I tell him to do something and he does the opposite cause he doesn't understand my language, my boss still holds me responsible. Which is bullshit, cause I don't think I should have to put up with him at all. It's to the point where I could tell him to take his lockout tag, and lockout a certain machine...and he'd start the machine instead. It's not going to be funny when he misunderstands and someone looses an arm. It just frustrates me...I had to take tests and have proper schooling to get where I am, and you can't even tell me that this dude passed those tests. So why does he have the position as me? I just feel like I busted my ass to watch someone get their handout. So again I apologize for the racist style comment, I didn't mean it like that. I don't discriminate. If I can understand what you say, and you work hard like me to get where you are....then I'm cool.

it's a tough spot to be in, but instead of bringing it to your boss as a complaint, try to get your boss's opinion and ask him for advice on how HE would handle the situation. not only will he not think you're whiney but he'll appreciate that you think he's "wise".

just go up to your boss and ask if he has a few mins and tell him you have a hard challenge and what would he do in your situation. if he's a dick, find his boss and ask about both of them :)

Thirdgen: Just some advice from the other side of the fence.

I studied English in Swedish school from the age of 7 to 19. I also took classes in Business English at University level, adding on to my Engineering degree. I lived for short periods in London and 2 years in the NC, US. I consider my English to be pretty much a second language for me, I read as much books in English as I do in Swedish and I speak as well as anyone can demand from a non-native person, who isn’t a teacher or similar.

Guess what?! The first period I lived in NC, I had hell trying to understand what people said. There is a difference between speaking English (which you study) and the local dialect. Just remember, that if you speak to this guy like anything you wrote in your first posts, he is chanceless.

Very true, and true of nearly every language out there too! I'm going to school soon to learn a language and I've been advised that once I'm out I'll be able to read the newspaper and watch the news but not understand local dialects.

At least with english, spanish, and swedish you don't have to learn a new alphabet...

You guys are right, again I apologize again for spazing out and typing something like a drunken madman. I just get pissed when I know that my great grandparents came here from Germany and were told the rules, which were "speak our language and abide by our rules." And they did. If I move to Germany now...guess what...I better speak German or I guess I'm leavin. So why should I have to deal with someone who can't even understand me when I tell him simple things? And how should be under qualified but still get the job I had to get schooling for? Because the company I work for is an equal opportunities employer? That's bullshit. Im my eyes, there is no such thing as race. But if Johnny figures out that 2+2=4 and Tomas has no idea what the number 2 is...then why should Tomas get the same job as Johnny? It just doesn't make sense to me. I have lots of friends that are of all different nationalities. My friend Ramon is from Paraguay, and he follows the rules and makes a good hard workin living. Another friend of mine is from Italy...same way. He doesn't expect to read speed limit signs in kilometers. So calling me a racist...well hate to break your hearts, but I'm not. Every time I've gone overseas I've felt slightly retarded though since that's my only language in in Thailand, Singapore, Germany, Dominican Republic, Cambodia etc they all speak English and many better than most people in our cities and rural areas... :(
