Suggestions For Houstonian Members
 

For those in the SE Texas region I'd like to give you a few pointers since ice/snow arn't common down here. I spent the last 5 winters in MI, so I've got a bit more experience with it.

1) LEAVE YOUR HEADLIGHTS UP! This is why they put that button on the dash. If you headlights freeze down you are SOL on your way to work in the morning.

2) Don't add extra weight in the trunk! The miata's short wheelbase makes it hard enough to drive in the snow/ice without adding weight to the back end.

3) When turning be extremely careful on speed... you'll need to go so slow that you feel retarded. If you go in too hot you will push badly then get severe and uncontrollable oversteer. I've ended up in many driveways like this (luckily never on a curb or obstacle). Never use the brakes/throttle while turning on ice... in some cars its no big deal. In the miata its dangerous.

4) Don't even bother using the brakes on ice to avoid an accident. Find a way around it, or prepare for impact. The brakes won't do shit.

Having lived 18 years in MI, I can say that I dont miss the snow. And now, being inside all day, I wouldn't know if it is snowing or not. I never see the sun. My office doesn't have windows. I'm going nuts in here!

I miss snow sometimes, I really thought it was fun to drive the Miata in (with snow tires only though) when most people hated to drive. BUT I do NOT miss the cold... EVER.

I ran falken ziex tires for 5 MI winters... never had a problem. I did get stuck once, but I put the car in first, let the clutch out, climbed out of the car and went and pushed it.... when it started rolling forward I ran to catch up and jumped in.

Man I saw a cellphone movie of a guy doing that once. He was stuck in the middle of a paved road. Turns out he couldn't run very well, he was soon stuck into a snowbank.
