Need something cheaper with plenty of room, decent mpg, isn't a total 130hp slouch, and it has to have an automatic trans

The only car I can really find to fit the bill is the new Turbo Hyundai Veloster. 38mpg, 201hp, 6 speed auto and 23k.

i sat in one at an auto show was like wow this is pretty cool. then i sat in the back seat and knocked myself unconscious on the hatch support.

Then go find a CPO'd Volvo C30 and buy that instead.

They're getting a LOT better than before, but still not "great" or reliable by our standards.
Sav is right: they drop in value like a rock. Why not a CPO known reliable car with low mileage? You'd save a ton

There are actually a couple Hyundais I would consider owning these days, but I have to agree with everybody else and say I would rather get a used C30 than this. I haven't driven it, though, so maybe I would like it. With a manual transmission, though.

What about the Mazdaspeed3 at 24K or the Ford Focus ST at 25K or the WRX at 26K? Three cars I'd rather spend my money on over a Veloster Turbo at 23K.

If you really want the 2-dar thing, then there's the C30 as mentioned, even the GTI.

Hyundai's look great on paper but lack in actual quality. Very unrefined mechanics, especially transmissions, and the interiors look great new but I hear they quickly wear with use. However, I have never actually owned one so this is all hear say from articles and friends.

OP: refrain from purchasing a Veloster. My homeboy picked one up earlier this month and has somehow managed to break most of the trim bits.

The last new car we bought was 12 years ago which this car will be replacing. This cars replacement will be bought in 10 years. I like new so I know exactly where it came from. If it were to be sold in 2-3 years, CPO would be the route I'd take.


Stick, stick, poor mpg (originally what I was looking at), not new and a VW. I HATE those little German piles.


I gotta be able to talk on the phone and eat my big mac while driving guys. How else will I keep this figure?

This is just another thread that has me thinking about a car for the wife.

Someone find me a 0%apr deal for a new 2012 Prius C.... its about as ugly and gets better gas mileage.

My wife drives quite a bit for her work and must have a car no more than 4 model years old and had to chose from a restricted list of "Toyota Camry" type cars. We ended up with a brand new Kia Optima. We haven't had it long, but she has put about 30k miles on it and there is no sign of wear or poor function.

Hell, her infotainment system is more intuitive and has a couple of better features than the one in my BMW (which originally stickered at $70k if you want to talk about depreciation ). If you drive the Veloster turbo and enjoy it - and it fits your utility needs - I would not talk you out of one.

Edit:

The 2.4 DI engine is terribly slow in a car that heavy, but retuns about 28 MPG on 87 octane with her driving it.

Although you said you hated VWs, she would swap the Optima with her old A3 2.0T DSG in a heartbeat.

If they make you buy a new car every four years, I hope they pay enough in mileage that it covers the depreciation! I wouldn't stay at a job like that if it didn't.
