Thinking about getting a 240sx
I want a DD that's fun while I toy and break shit on the miata. Also winter time is coming up, and my soft top is not really water proof. So I'm looking at s13 240sx's to buy for this winter, etc. Anybody here own one? What should I look for when purchasing one? I'm not expecting a great car here, just looking for something that will get me around and get the usual pamper I give my cars.
Not sure where you're located but I think your biggest problem is going to be finding one that hasn't been completely destroyed to shit by drifter kids. If you're in California, they are apparently really difficult to get through smog. A friend of mine used 2 cats in line and changed everything emissions related and still couldn't get his to pass.
I have one lined up, for 1000$. The guy wasn't into drifting, so thats a plus, and it's almost stock. It's got issues and it's an automatic, but he's including the five speed transmission and swap kit. I think that's what I"m going to end up getting.
oh lawd
Get a hardtop for the Miata.
I was thinking about that too, but honestly the 240 sounds better. I tend to fuck stuff up when I work on my car and if something breaks, the hardtop won't get me to work. A 240 might, unless i fuck that up too.
Another Harbison ricer? lulz

for the love of christ, buy a stock EG hatch to daily and never look back |
Well I was mostly kidding about my wrenching skills. For the most part things go smoothly but there's always that time when something doesn't go right or something breaks. I really don't want to get anything FWD either. 240 seems fairly cost effective. And yes, I'm a harbison ricer.

If all you're going to do is DD it, I don't see why not.
I'd drive it, but not without the 5 speed. Then sell it way overpriced to some drifter fag.
lol a pig nose
i have a 240.. its deffinetly something you have to get used to when coming out of a miata. i traded my miata for a clean 91 coupe with a full cage, welded diff, intake, and practicly no interior lol. actually just got a sr20 swap that im picking up on tuesday for it |
It will be my DD and I may mod it. But I will make sure the other car is reliable before I mod the opposite car. needs a five speed and that will happen.
if you do mod it and still want to use it as a daily dont weld the diff... it makes horrid noises while making tight turns at slow speeds
240 can be a great DD. Make sure that the frame rails aren't rotted to all hell. It actually looks in great shape all things considered.
Check the frame rails and if it came with one of those "Aero by Nerf" foam rear spoilers the odds are the hatch under it is completely rusted out. The hatches also tend to rust inside the rear wheel wells.
I had a KA-T S13 hatch for about two months and then sold it because I didn't really care for it. It wasn't too awesome to daily. The stock seats suck, it's really noisy inside (very little factory insulation), the interiors on those cars are super ghetto too, most stuff splits/breaks from sun exposure, mileage isn't too hot either (even when not turbo'd). Like was mentioned above, buy an EG Civic hatch for equivalent cash, relish in the sweet mileage and near 0 maintenance/issues. |
The guy took the spoiler off so I think it probably lacks rust in that area. As for the frame rails, I will take a look when I go to Charlotte Thursday. I'd really prefer a 240 regardless of the interior/gas mileage because of the cheap price, RWD, and good aftermarket support. Plus try finding a decent EG hatch around here. Those things are gold to everybody around here, and priced as it too.

I have one of those. I want a different car to compliment the miata, that also shares similar characteristics.

*OP googles Venn Diagram*
Seriously, you pay 1K for a car and it isn't going to be a reliable DD. Put that money into your existing car and make it reliable. Problem solved. |
If you do get it and do a sr20 swap rather than a ka-t your a retard.
the car looks to have a single cam at the moment but KAs are everywhere and people give them away

If you buy the 240 it'll just be a second project in a week. No gear head can leave shit alone and just drive it. Pick up something useful that you won't dump money into modding. Like a mid/late 90's Ranger. Then you can use the truck for picking up Miata parts or making money helping people move. Gas isn't killer but a Prius will make you kill yourself. A Miata is a reliable cheap car that will need work time to time. I've had SR 240's in the past. You will always be under the hood. If your dumb enough to buy it put a KA24de in it, '91 intake cam and go have fun cheapish. 2 project cars eventually becomes 2 cars down at the same time
A $1k DD should be something like a Hyundai, Toyota Tercel/Corolla, Ford Escort, an older Volvo...
That's complete bullshit Pusha. On three different occasions I bought 800$ cars. Granted the first one was a 94 toyota celica that randomly stalled out and wouldn't start back up. It took me forever to diagnose that and fix it, but the other ones were a 94 Mitsubishi 3000gt that I popped the hood once and never had to again (except for routine maintenance) and a 92 le Miata that needed spark plug wires. It was missing under load. It's all about luck. This could go either way right now, and if things don't work out my miata is very reliable. I don't mind project cars but this particular 240 is this guy's DD right now, so I'd assume it's running somewhat well.
how far is your commute? get a 50cc scooter and slap a miataturbo.net sticker on your helmet.

Sounds like you've already made up you mind. Just do it.
I agree with the small pickup as a dd.
