And in that thread you posted J_man, they claim 100-200 gig discs coming down

more proof in the pudding: HD DVD booth dead compared to Blu Ray @ CES

Regardless of when blu-ray wins, Sony is praying that they'll actually make some money to recoup the gobs of money they spent developing/marketing/bribing studios/delaying the PS3 before someone produces something with an easy interface for the general public for downloadable video content (like the iPod) which is, as Ben stated, the future.

Holographic disc > BluRay

Hold on let me go to bestbuy and pick them up and see which is better.. OH thats right one is imaginary.

Maybe santa and the easter bunny love holographic discs.

holographic disc is not vaporware. it's just not going to be brought to the consumer market.... because the consumer market is going to downloadable media.

Bye bye HD DVD.

well that just sucks... I agree with one point in the article that my old DVDs look really, really good with the upconverting on my HD DVD, but I can't find any movies in the HD format that I actually want to buy. Looks like my player is going to craigslist sometime in the near future. :(

So, should I get a stand alone blueray player or just buy a PS3?

Loki047 01-12-2008 11:25 AM

PS3 upgrades with each new blu ray profile and it plays games and its a web browser and its a media extender and a soon to be VOD divx player

While the HD DVD end is inevitable, that Variety article quoted above from a week ago about Universual is not correct - some journalist decided to generate traffic to their site/make people buy his magazine. Looks like for now Universal and Paramount will remain on the other side of the fence. Here is what Universal said on the next day:

"Contrary to unsubstantiated rumors from unnamed sources, Universal's current plan is to continue to support the HD DVD format," said Ken Graffeo, executive vice president of HD strategic marketing for Universal Studios Home Entertainment and co-president of the HD DVD Promotional Group.
Graffeo's comments follow a report in yesterday's Variety that Universal's agreement to exclusively support HD DVD had ended and had not been renewed. The report went on to speculate that both Universal and Paramount could switch sides soon, ending the high-def format war instantly.
A Universal spokesperson told us this afternoon that the studio plans to issue new upcoming HD DVD title announcements in the near future.
The HD DVD Promotions Group is also said to be planning its own statement regarding the rumors of a Universal switch to format neutrality.

Btw, have you heard about the Chinese HD format? Looks like that is taking off fast over there and China will be generating tons of pirated movies in that format (= very cheap, probably cheaper than regular DVD - in the past (in the DVD first years) back in Europe one could buy Chinese copy of every movie on DVD for a buck or two (vs over 10 times for the original DVD without any difference in quality). I wonder how will that play out ...

It's really a shame. HD DVD is such a nice format. I love my Toshiba player and the ~dozen discs I have. And hopefully I can score some more on clearance. And I'll hang on to it until the next gen player comes out--whatever format that will be

upconvert is not the same thing as HD

Correct!!!

I can enjoy all movies in hidef (cause of blu ray)

But becasue Upconcert is fine for 99% of movies, I dont see a reason to all blu ray crazy.

I would be surprised if there is another format before there is the next wave of TVs.

Same here, except I only have the HD DVDs that came in the box with the player. If anyone hears of a clearance on HD DVDs, post it please.
