Top Gear America

Again?

Not even gonna watch the video. They need to just give up the idea, IF they can manage to actually produce a season or two, it's never going to be even half as good as the real Top Gear.

Techsalvager 08-08-2010 02:36 PM

History will be hosting a full season of Top Gear USA, which I will watch.

curly 08-08-2010 02:42 PM

Seriously, barf.

The video is slightly funny, if you enjoy watching a fat bloke laughing like an idiot, and an old Cadillac driving a motocross course.

Why do I know the word bloke? Because I've watched the one and only Top Gear that ever has, and ever will, exist.

trickyrix 08-08-2010 02:50 PM

I'll watch it just because... but who are those three asshats???

hustler 08-08-2010 03:13 PM

Failure in execution on its way. I don't understand why NBC can't broadcast Top Gear?

curly 08-08-2010 03:15 PM

I figured they dropped it because they knew it'd suck.

and now a sample of what happens when a network gets everything "right":

That seems to be what Hollywood is missing: you can't replicate perfection. The closer to perfection it is, the lower your chances of duplicating the original's success. I'm not saying that Top Gear is perfect, but it's definitely closer to the top of the scale than the bottom.

They'd have better luck coming up with an original car show (even if it was vaguely similar) than trying to make an Americanized version. However, I have a feeling that it would be difficult to create a mainstream car show here; not sure why.

Probably because most people in Hollywood aren't famous for interesting commentary, and the people America chooses for celebrity status aren't intelligent. I guess we could have the Jersey Shore guys do a car show, that might get some viewers.

redfred18t 08-08-2010 04:37 PM

The US is too PC to handle Top Gear (even though BBCA re-airs it, although I believe it's heavily edited). And the second someone badmouths a car by the big three, that show will get cancelled lol

Indeed. That was a great segment. And here's another great segment:

The truth is, they're all great segments. But it's more than just Hollywood production values, liberal interpretation of the standards for libel, and a nearly infinite budget- it's the personalities. I mean, they could do a whole hour of nothing but Jeremy, Richard & James sitting in armchairs reading aloud from the phone book, and I absolutely guarantee that it would be worth watching. I don't sense that particular brand of magic happening in what I've seen so far here.

This sums it up perfectly. Look at their "news" segments. They hardly have any content, but along with some ridiculous motoring news, the tangents they run off on are hilarious.

The Vietnam motorcycle episode is a great one too. And the 2nd amphibious car episode. And the Antarctica special, and the America one, and the Africa one, and the South America one...I could go on forever.

... and the race against the steam locomotive, and the race against the boat, and the race against the man in tight shorts, and the race against the surly-looking teenagers, and the race against public transit, and the race against a Cessna, and the race against the Japanese bullet train, and the race against the other boat, and the race against a bunch of pigeons, and the race against a rock climber, and the race against a bobsled team, and the race against a fighter jet, and the race against a tall man in the mud, and the race against a greyhound, and the race against a pack of hunting dogs, and the race against the Royal Mail, and the race against the British army, and the race against the third boat, and the race against some kids on BMX bicycles, and the race against the guy on rocket-powered skates, etc etc etc.

But if the blokes hosting the presentation aren't worth watching, it's all for naught.

hustler 08-08-2010 05:19 PM

I'm a big fan of the mission from Ecuador to the beach episode.

KPLAFIN 08-08-2010 05:30 PM

I'm going back and re-watching every episode from season 1-15. The torrents I can find for seasons 1-2 were awesome 3-7 suck ASS (like 2 day download times for ~3gb), anyone got a good source?

I can (maybe) hook you up. PM me.

Doppelgänger 08-08-2010 11:39 PM

The problem with the show will be everyone who will write it off just "because". Rut (the big one with the glasses) used to be "one of us" who hung out at out local weekly meets back in like 02-05 before persuing a career with SPEED channel. He is a car guy for real. I consider him a friend of mine and I hope this really works out despite the negative prejudice.

FRT_Fun 08-09-2010 12:08 AM

Not comparing it to the British Top Gear I thought the video was mildly funny. I just hope they aren't afraid to give real thoughts on things.

MezJr 08-09-2010 12:48 AM

They needed to license Top Gear but not use the name. Publicize that its produced by TG guys but really try to make something new.

Just really want a decent american car show.
