don't those engines suffer from crank walk at those levels?

Crankwalk on the 4g63 can occur at any level of horsepower (even stock).. and its actually very common. There was a big debate on whether it should be a recall..however mitsu got off easy.

i suppose the aftermarket has a fix?

i love awd cars, but damn their complexity to repair.

Actually Kung Fu the "fix" kind of sucked..
Its important to remember we are talking about 2 gens of DSM. The first gen used a 6 bolt motor which COULD crankwalk but it was RARE. The 2nd gen motors (7 bolt) were the ones plagued with crankwalk. To prevent or in the case of the occurance of crankwalk all SERIOUS 2g owners built themselves 1g (6 bolt) motors, the rest just waited out their time until the crankwalk occured/didnt occur. The head from the 2g was often swapped onto these built 1g motors due to better flow capabilities. Other times, the 2g owners maintained the 1g head and used a 1g manifold and the 14B turbo found on the 1g DSM. These turbos flowed MUCH better then the t-25s provided with the 2gs (and ironically years later on mazdaspeed proteges)

yea the difficulty of replacing and prices to get someone else to is the reason i sold mine, everything is tight under the hood and just not fun to do in the driveway. Crankwalk was pretty much fixed by 97 but i think your was a 95 right? that was one of the worst years, just read up on the signs and pay attention.

i believe that it was something like 30% of the 95-97 cars have the problem. Working on them does in fact suck, and many of the little problems were buried somewhere turning them into a PITA to fix. They are great cars and cheap speed no matter how you cut the mustard.

Yes, there was like a 1/3 chance you would "walk" not to mention the random small things that always happened.. mine had some kind of ball joint issue which apparently was a recall, as well as a crank seal leak.
