Traded the Miata on a daddy-mobile
Yeah so I figured I'd give it a shot at a stealership since this local one has been hyping up high trade-ins. They had an 05 Scion xb with rims and window tint out front, so I thought...what the hell. Well they ended up giving me 4k for the 2001. Keep in mind it's been in an accident, has hail damage, paint is almost fully faded on trunk and driver-side fender, needs alignment, a/c doesn't work worth a shit, tires are bald, top was ripped and fixed crappily with silicon, interior has cigarette damage, is at 91k and really needed to have the tb/water pump done, and is making a really loud pinging noise when pressing the gas. So yeah...I doubted I would ever sell it private and even so...4k is what I had it listed at.
Got the Scion for 10k. It's a local with 1 owner, 74k, and standard. It has the ground effects, trd rims, tint, aem intake, and trd exhaust. Not saying I'm really into modding a fwd 1.5l van but it's a nice plus to have tasteful things. So as it stands I owe 7k before financing. I'm going to really try to push the sale of my 97 so I can get, hopefully, 5 or so out of it and then only owe a tiny bit on the loan. Now before you talk shit, I picked something I knew I would drive but definitely not mod. I could have easily bought a wrx or something a lot cooler but I would be way too tempted to work on it. So this seems to be a nice median. Pics included: http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/2696/dscn6750e.jpg http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/9352/dscn6751.jpg |

your life on this forum has been irrefutable been a systematic, abject failure. It started with snake bitten cooter and culminated into a shitbox child-support chariot. Its amazing how a thin little piece of latex can ensure so much success in life.

Good choice for a car. I actually plan to pick on up as a daily driver later in the future. Did you pick up the 5spd model?
|

Fun fact - the Toyota bB was designed to mimic the Chevy Astro van's appearance. Apparently the Japanese like the "style" of the Astro. I had a Japanese friend when I was in Florida who thought it was awesome that my mom owns an Astro and didn't understand why I thought it was a pile. So when I read that the bB had been modeled after the Astro I wasn't surprised.

Ew, Scion. Only one I would kind of sort of want would be the tC. The boxes don't do it for me.
|
Well, obviously not everyone's favorite car, but at least you're moving in the right direction, kudos. I drove an '07 tC when I was shopping for cars and liked it. Not as good gas mileage as the mazda3 or lancer that I eventually bought, but it was a 2.4, unlike the others 2.0s. It's built for shorter people though, visor was right in my line of site.

No, its built for shriveled up old people. The only people I see in Scions are old people.
I'm guessing there isn't as much of a hipster demographic out in Alabama, so it probably gets snatched up by old people for its cargo carrying capabilities. |
I'v seen a few kids driving them. They have their visor on sideways and the bass booming. So I don't count them.

Screw the haters, they are really just jealous. I think the xb is pretty cool, but then I want a Honda Element for an OTM. Great for carrying SCUBA gear, bicycles, or the dogs.

I just don't understand why he posted this thread and didn't think that it would be ~3 pages of him getting bashed before it dies off.

Around here the only people I see driving scions look like this: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3118/...dfc9c98f80.jpg |
No I'm still getting rid of the other miata. I ultimately decided to get rid of both...I can't afford the have a daily and a fun car...at least for now. Maybe one day after I finish school and get a real job. The car is a 5spd so it's all good. It's not exactly the best looking car out there but it will work. The point of selling both miata's is so I owe barely anything on the loan when all is said and done.
The one thing I like about the car is it very European(or asian), at least on the inside. I just like the smaller, economical cars for some reason. When deciding on a car a lot of things went into consideration but gas mileage was really at the top. With an 80+ mile commute daily I can't afford to be getting 18mpg with an old jeep or something of that nature. |

What the fuck is wrong with you? Didn't we slap you around enough already about making stupid financial decisions? Just die and leave the loan to your child already.
|
What, weren't there any Pontiac Azteks available in your area?

Have fun replaceing windshields.....have fun replacing those 18" tires. In terms of build quality, the xB isn't some marvel of long-lasting quality either. Also, $10k for a car that sold for $13k new? Umm OK.
So when you sell the other car, does that mean you'll stop posting on here? |

In for some badass like myself railing your girlfriend.

Dave Ramsey (and simple math) have proven that gas mileage never justifies a car purchase.
Actual operating cost can however, and in that respect you have failed. Your insurance will cost more (full coverage over liability), your tires will cost more per mile, as well as brake parts and other maintenance items likely costing more than a Miata, or say a late model Corolla/Civic. You only bought this car because someone financed you. Just because they'll let you doesn't mean you should. There are plenty of other "daddy-mobiles" out there that make a lot more sense. |

I was thinking the same thing. Seriously $10k for a four year old $13k car with high mileage?? I don't care how many mods it has on it, no way it was worth 10k. Hope you enjoy it though, and hope it's reliable for you. |
I've ridden in an xB and thought it was spacious inside and relatively comfortable. And I like Toyota's build quality a good bit. And as a family truckster they have very reasonable utility. However, a brief craigslist search just returned three '05 xB's with 65 to 80k miles for ~$7,500. Since that would be a retail price and the dealer fucked the person who traded in the Scion and gave them low wholesale ($5,500-$6,000), you gave away your Miata to a dealer for the pleasure of doing business with them. And you gave them money on top of that. And you are paying too much for financing (because it is their game to never lose).
When will people ever learn to stop buying cars from dealers? You never win with a dealer. "But I got such a good deal!" Who told you that, the dealer? "But I got them to drop their price so much!" After they raised it so much more? "I got it for so much less than they wanted for it!" No, they got exactly what they wanted for it. The starting price is always a ridiculous made up price that they intend to come off of to make you feel good about your deal. That is the game. My favorite that you didn't use here is: "But I got zero percent financing!" And you paid for it yourself in the purchase price. "No, I didn't pay any more for it." Yes you did. They could have dropped the sale price a lot more if you didn't take the zero percent financing. The money to buy down the financing comes from somewhere, and it isn't the dealer's pocket, it's yours. The only real deal is the "bait" car in a "bait and switch" dealer advertisement and you will never actually get to buy that one, at least not at that actual price...by design. But that van should give you good service for many years. The only way to get your money's worth out of it is to drive it for many years. Like eight. |
Never have and never will buy a car from a dealer, unless I for some reason just have to have one brand new. I hate watching people I know go through new cars like water, and they keep trading their old cars to dealers to "get a better deal". They are still paying WAY to much and getting way too little for their old cars.
|
I bought my 96 Miata from a Mom N' Pop dealer..but it had some good modes (racing beat/hard dog/koni) and it had 100k on it...but I got it for $4500 in 02...which really wasn't a bad deal. I knew when I was getting into when I decided to look at Miatas from dealerships.

Only thing European I see is its plain and cheap looking like a VW.
|
I bought my Lancer new, probably a big mistake, I keep seeing all these used cars that I'd love to have, just had no idea how to get the financing for it, the dealer does it all for you. That and I completely overlooked how much I'd have to pay out the ass for insurance on a brand new car. I'm crossing my fingers my rates drop when I turn 25. FWIW, you bought an incredibly reliable car, but don't make their reputation stop you from performing basic maintenance, it still needs it.
|
To get financing: Go to several banks and tell them you are interested in a vehicle loan. Give them year, make, model and other basic info about vehicle and yourself. They will tell you what dollar amount they will finance, down payment they require, and interest rate they will charge you. Pick the one with the best interest rate. Car owner can then go to the selected bank with you and the bank will give them the money and take the title. Done.
To get a better rate: Open a savings account with a credit union. They are member owned. Then in a few weeks get their rates for an auto loan as outlined above. Their percentage rates will typically be lower than the banks by a good margin. To get the best rate: Open savings account at credit union. Make car payments to savings account. Buy car outright with savings account money. Bank paying you > you paying bank. |

+1 on sixshooter's advice.
We've bought every car through credit union...either new with their interest (making it easier to pay off quickly), or used and bought outright by saving and withdrawing when that emotionally charged day comes around. The real key is planning your purchase. Emotions run rampant when looking at cars...and if you just walk out your door one day thinking "car" you will walk back in that evening with a car in the driveway and less than ideal price and financing. If you sit down with SO one sunday morning and plan when, what, how and how much well before the event, you will enjoy it so much more. |
I'm convinced a couple of guys in the styling department had a bet that they could make the ugliest car on the road, and Americans would still buy them.
