Traveling to Houston - any must visit places?

Title says most of it; I'm traveling to Houston at the end of this week for a couple days and am wondering if there are any must-go-to places for dinner or drinks/night life. I'm traveling for business, so will be busy during the day so this is only applicable to places/activities after 6pm.

I really enjoy a fresh pretzel and beer at Cobra vs Mongoose. You might check if MSR-Houston has red meat and racing during the days your in town. If so make sure and get a decent rental car :) Of course F1 is only a few hours away this weekend.

No Red Meat and Race Fuel event while I am there, thanks for the heads up though!
Also no track day or race this weekend at MSR Houston, otherwise I may have extended my trip to get in a track I've never driven.

I'll try to check out Mongoose vs Cobra.

Tacqueria Tacambaro
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=2520+...gl=us&t=h&z=16
You want a mollejas gordita and buche tacos. I strongly believe those are the two best tacos I've had in the nation and Mexico. It's Michoacan style so very rare in this country, they are $1.50 each. They are only open until like 2 so try to make it, I promise you it will absolutely be worth it. YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST EAT HERE.

El Rey
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=el+re...is,+Texas&z=11
I love $31, Ropa Vieja. Yes, it's a chain, but it's fantastic.

Big Red Cock
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=brc+h...h&z=16&iwloc=A
You are required to eat the "Bad Ass Biscuit". It is epic.

The Anvil
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=the+a...h&z=16&iwloc=A
It's expensive, but each drink takes like 5 minutes to make because it's made with care. You must try Pliney's Tonic. This place makes their own tinctures and bitters, they are legit.

The Petrol Station
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Petro...h&z=16&iwloc=A
Excellent burger, best beer list in Houston (rotator).

Les Givrals
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=les+g...h&z=16&iwloc=A
$3.50 loaded Viet sandwiches. They are insanely good, and only $3-4. There's more than one location and the one on Washington is open late. My GF and I usually eat there after the bars and shit.

Do not go to Haymerchant, Underbelly, or Max's Wine Dive. They are expensive shit holes full of ------, cum-lord, base model BMW lessees. I'm serious about Tacqueria Tacambaro. You absolutely must try those two tacos. You should come to F1. If you do, I'll try not to rape you...much.

Im with Hustler on Tacqueria Tacambaro - you must do this.

also, go here:

Luling City Market ~ Real Texas Bar-B-Que

it is my favorite bbq place, and i have eaten in many. the bbq sauce is ridiculous.

icantthink4155 11-13-2012 07:22 AM

I hear there is a gigantic AT&T distribution center there!

Thanks for agreeing with me, but I must respectfully disagree with you on that BBQ place. That place is about sauce, not meat, and in that case in makes it the opposite of "Texas BBQ". If you like that, you're in business.

Have you been to Tacambaro? Do you agree that woman makes "epic guts"?

crashnscar 11-13-2012 02:50 PM

That's quite a list, hustler.

Sounds like I definitely have to get to Tacqueria Tacambaro though.

Tacambaro is crazy. Here's two pages on some dude getting all romantic about it:
Taco-Truck Gourmet - Page 1 - Dining - Houston - Houston Press

This was the first place where I started eating guts (other than sweet breads) and every place I've been since is a let-down. I've had sweet breads all over the country since I travel for work, and I love them. I lived with a chef for a while and worked in a couple 4.5-star restaurants so I like to think that while I'm not an official gourmand, I am ahead of the curve. Well, once I had those Mollejas tacos, I have not ordered sweet breads anywhere else, and probably never will.

When it comes to the Buche, I think I might like that taco more. I had never really eaten guts before and my GF ordered the buche which is really ugly in pictures. In the taco, it look unassuming. I thought it was going to be chewy and dank, but it's not. It's crazy rich, the right amount of crispiness, and just perfect. I had never eaten guts before that day really, Katie made me each a chunk, and I immediately ordered two tacos. I should also note that I've tried buche and mollejas elsewhere, and it's kind of ruined tacos for me. There is no substitute for the Tacambaro.

what side of town are you in. Remember Houston is like 5 cities: Houston proper, Sugarland, Katy, NE, SE, etc

what do you like to do/eat?

there is an autox this sunday. DLB Racing Calendar from the HOUBMWCCA.

I cant stand the roach coaches.
A least do one one of the thousands of taquerias.
Or this. I dont feel like I wonder if my guts will shoot fire.

Hustler, i have eaten there and it is fucking epic for something you buy out of a truck.

and i think youre wrong on the luling stuff, maybe you had a bad experience. they make the best topcut brisket ive ever had, you should give it a go. you have to ask for topcut as i dont think they specify on the menu. the sauce is just a sexual bonus. i brought about 10 bottles home with me last time i was over ^^

Again, I've had sweet breads all over the country, at $40/plate or more, this lady does them better than anyone else.

There are two types of people in this world:
1. People who eat BBQ because they like the meat, without sauce.
2. Closet rapist BBQ saucers with no integrity and no soul

It's personal preference. I have no use for brisket, pork ribs, or beef ribs that need the mop. Fat is the flavor, so if you're afraid of fat, you need sauce, due to the "low-T". I still have not tried Franklin's in Austin, probably because I'm not getting up at 6am to stand in line for 3-5 hours. No BBQ is that good.

Correct. Got in line at Franklin's at 9am, finished eating at 1:30pm. Good BBQ, but not worth 4.5 hours of my life. I could've driven to lockhart and back with time to spare. The only redeeming feature was that alcohol consumption is allowed (encouraged?) while you're in line.

I am at Petrol once or twice a week it seems like. The Lamb Burger is pretty good and they have a great selection of beers. I still need to hit up that truck you talk about so much.

Another relaxing place to go it Cedar Creek Bar and Grill. I personally like this place a lot and it is pretty laid back. The cowboy burger is stellar.

Lolled at that :giggle:

I'm afraid I do love the BBQ for the sauces. You need to remember I live in the UK and we can't do BBQ, at all. I'm even trying to fab a good smoker as you just can't get one here.

If I want some sauce-less action ill go buy a good steak usually.

jacob300zx 11-14-2012 07:22 PM

Where will you find mesquite wood in the UK?

Pitlab77 11-14-2012 08:42 PM

BBQ with a country drive.
