Trunkable radios
 

Random question that I am sure someone on here can answer. What the hell is a trunkable radio? I am looking at some UHF M1225LS radios for our track cars and all the auctions say they are trunkable. I tried to google it and I can't find a thing on it.

I assumed it meant it could be mounted in the trunk, but I just wanted to make sure.

Thanks. I don't know how I couldn't find that. All I could find when I searched trunckable radios was the definition of trunkable in urban dictionary. A girl that you wouldn't mind knocking out out and putting in the trunk of your car.

Your question had nothing to do with what I assumed it would be. Expected a car stereo that was trunk mounted with a remote control deck, similar to a communications system.. Turns it was actually about the trunked communications system instead.

Trunked radios are neat and annoying at the same time. Useful feature is all local agencies can use the exact same equipment and even share frequencies (channels) without any crosstalk unless its necessary for that to occur. Far as actual operational use, it really kinda sucks. Get out of range of the control system and repeater and you're hosed. Have the control system (computer) go down and again you're hosed (Natural disaster anyone???) The latter happened in a local suburb of KCMO about three months ago and left the entire city without any communications. Thankfully KCMO stepped up and loaned out their entire backup analog trunked system until they could get back up and running. Kinda pathetic, actually.
