TX Crew - Where to eat in Austin?

So we're here in your grand state of Tejas. We have a group of about 12 and I'm wondering where a few good places to eat are. I seem to remember a thread having this sort of info (US F1 thread I thought...) but I searched and couldn't find anything.

So what's a good bar-b-que place? Mexican? Etc.

Think $15-20 entrees, we don't have that much to spend. Also we'd generally would like to stay near-ish to COTA, we don't have tons of time to drive all over the place.

Thanks for any tips

Make sure to bring the goggles and copper. Dont forget to say hi to all the artsy fartsy liberals who are going to eventually take over TX and ruin it beyond repair.

MUST EAT!!!! Black's BBQ in Lockhart. It's a no-sauce place. You want to do brisket, both types of sausange, and order at least one beef rib. This place is the king of Texas BBQ.

El Taco Rico

There is an awesome breakfast taco spot between this Subway and Starbucks:

MUST EAT!!!! Lucy's Fried Chicken is pretty awesome. Kotomile and I ate a ton of bull testicles there. You need to eat here.

I eat at Red's just about every time on on the south side of town.

+1 on Black's! Best BBQ hands down. Salt Lick is overrated. this one is better.

Salt lick is great if you like "sauce bbq" which is for ------s, like shitty live music, and get boner from watching dumb-ass children running around going ape-shit.

If you're not afraid of a little fat, love freedom, and you're not a pedo, you will agree that Black's is God of BBQ.

Efini is basically required to go here and eat brisket and sausage. He's also required to order a beef rib. Usually I don't care for beef ribs, but Black's makes the something special, like a filet on a bone.

Torchy's is a dumpy chain and it's not even that good.

When I go to Black's I eat so much meat and fat that I pretty much get instant diarrhea. You won't regret it.

^ that explains a lot... I'm in when there for V8SC... as long as the squirts don't last into the morning.

That place was pretty awesome. And the chicken tastes good the next day from poverty seating in T1 too, lol.

That one food truck over by the donut one was cool too. Good food and the owner didn't give us an earful about sustainable organic farming like up the street.

I'll also add in Chuys (I like the barton springs location best)

Pho Saigon off Lamar has the best Pho I've found in Austin

Uchiko has amazing Japanese fusion, if you go during happy hour (5-6:30) it gets more affordable, but even then it's pretty easy to spend $35/person if you like sake

Buenos Aires Cafe: Order a lomito beef sandwich and a mojito. Trust me.

Home Slice pizza seems to be a fan favorite as well

That should be enough to keep you busy

Brothers -

Thank you for all the tips.

Unfortunately, we're so busy during the race weekends that we rarely have time to eat/go out for dinner. We were only able to try out one of the suggestions so we went to Black's this evening.

'Twas excellent. I had one of the enormous beef ribs and one type of sausage. Didn't try the brisket but the first bite from the beef rib was borderline life changing. Feedback from the rest of the team was very positive (except for one driver who is a big baby and "doesn't like smoked food").

As for the rest of the weekend>

COTA was/is pretty awsome. Tough track to race at and definitely, definitely a "handling" track. The MX-5s were the fastest cars in our class by quite a bit despite having the lowest horsepower,

We sucked. Our cars were decently fast but a mistake in the pit stop caused a DNF for one of the cars and compromised strategy on the 2nd car led to a not so great finish.

Now...back to the freezing cold of the midwest. That sucks

P.S. 85mph speed limit down to Black's was awesome

GeneSplicer 03-03-2013 02:15 PM

Dam, what kinda of pit mistake would lead to a DNF?
Better question - was it your mistake? ;)

Will be hunting you down in a couple weeks... look for the fat guy with a Milo's cheese burger stuck to his face - well, that doesn't say much - after all, this IS the South.

Efini~FC3S 03-03-2013 03:00 PM

Not securing the hood pins = smashed windshield.

No, it was not my mistake, and it was. We are all responsible for not releasing a car without the hood secured.

Looking forward to meeting you in a few weeks.
