Unions can eat my ass!

so I'm here in the heart oh Philly pulling into a parkin garage, $22/day btw, I'm asking this asshat union garage guy if he is gonna lock my car when he parks it since it is convieniently valet. He says "I don't know" like some criminal fresh out of prison. The whole time I'm thinking, take some fucking responsibility you fuck! (my iphone just spellchecked fick and made it fuck, w00t) then he says my license plate and begins to harass me about how I'm from va and everyone from va asks shit like that. I badly want to tell him to park his fucking car in dc unlocked and come back 4 hours later. Who wants to take bets if its not completely looted. So I gave on the keys in the end because I had to get to the job site. I pretty much ute the place already...

Also, "I don't know" is shorthand for "depends on how much my up front tip is"

rleete 06-24-2008 03:03 PM

WTF does a stupid parking attendant (like there are any smart ones?) have to do with unions?

BradC 06-24-2008 03:17 PM

Typical union attitude maybe is what he is getting at.

Newbsauce 06-24-2008 03:36 PM

Philly is probably one of the nastiest ass cities in the world. I mean the metro smells like old urine. If your really concerned about your car, park it near a Septa station and take the train in.

This city, or any major city, are run by union labor. These parking garages are ran by unions. Meaning none of the employees are accountable for anything that happens to my property and they could give a shit. Unions just breed bad workers through lack of competition.
if you are not going to lock my car tell me no, not "I don't know". Take some fucking responsibility.

that may be true, but they also keep your boss or municipality from assraping you hopefully. I should know, my job is about to go union and I can't wait.

Yeah, non-union jobs breed management ass-hat syndrome. Chief symptoms being constant abuse of workers, low pay, and unjustified firings. Sounds like this guy was just a crappy employee. Now, truth be told, if his union is very strong he would be harder to fire than if it was a non-union place, but it's still very possible. Lodge a complaint. If he has several substantiated complaints or logged disciplinary actions he will be fired.

GM will agree with you.

Pitlab77 06-24-2008 06:28 PM

every time I have to "graciously valet" my car with no other option I tell the guy/girl to get in the passenger seat and tell me where to park.

I don't let people valet my car. I've left places when they wont even let me pay the valet fee and park my own car. Use to piss my ex off.

Well I've never been a big fan of unions in the past but I happen to be a new member of one b/c I just got a job with Verizon and its a union place. I'm doing a similar job to what I did when I worked at Citizens Bank a few years ago but I'm getting paid almost double. Good for me, bad for Verizon i guess. Remember that when you get your next phone bill. :D

We got the bid to do all the concrete work when our local Best buy was being built a couple years back. I remember we were one of the only non-union companies on the jobsite (we are family owned w/Brazilian guys). It would start to rain and a couple of the union guys would draw a circle in the dirt and wait. The first time I was like WTF, then I saw. When the circle was full of rain drops, they packed up and left. That summer on rainy days, we had the jobsite all to ourselves. ;)

That experience gave me just that much more pride in myself, but also our company. I've heard alot of union stories that fit the bill of lazy fucks that consider themselves "construction workers", but that one experience showed me first hand they are just pussies. This is all just IMHO and how us local hardcore construction guys shoot the shit about the union. No hard feelings to anyone on here that may be associated. :hs:

Everyone's stories dogging unions are interesting because after working 3 years in construction in Alaska as a union equipment operator for multiple companies I never saw anything like what people describe in the lower 48. Pretty much everyone I've ever known in my Union has been a hard working, ass busting, get the job done individual. No circle drawing just many hours of labor, lots of sweat, and a drive to work in any element necessary.

Ever seen snow in July? We were doing 120 loads a day then in our scraper fleet, fun stuff man. I miss construction bad.

Local 399 Hollywood Teamster here. That shit would NEVER fly in my industry and certainly not in my Union.

It's interesting. Here in broadcast engineering, I find that the majority of the customers that I deal with (probably 75%) work in non-union facilities, with the remainder split pretty much evenly between NABET and IATSE, with a few token IBEW. As a broad generalization, it seems to me that those working in union shops are for the most part more unhappy with their jobs, and less sociable with their co-workers and the rest of the world as compared to their non-union bretheren.

Now, I grant you that labor unions have their role. As an extension of the old-world guild system, they can set and enfore rules concerning employee training and apprenticing as a means of encouraging a consistant level of skill and competancy among workers in a particular skilled craft.

If your job involves operating dangerous machenery in hazardous conditions, or pushing around crucibles of molten steel near an open blast furnace, yeah- I can see opportunities for worker abuse and the role of the union as a means of leveraging power for the purpose of securing safe working conditions.

But c'mon- when we have unions representing the folks bagging my groceries at Safeway, things have gone a bit far.

johndoe 06-25-2008 11:39 AM

why don't you go do that job. I'm sure it sucks ass and the hours and benefits are horrible. They probably work harder than you notice within your 2 minutes at the register.
