USB Power Outlets
 

So, I have a few little appliances that are USB charge-only. I'm sure you have the same and probably hate just having them hanging off your PC, PS3, etc. Some guy came up with this design and it seems pretty awesome to me:

I'm almost a little jealous, this seems like one of those little "tweak" invention/ patents that could be worth a good amount in the future.

Hmmm... I've got an old 4port mini usb hub I use as charge "station" where ever needed, like travel.

Wow, that's pretty sweet. How's it wire in, just like "stock"?

It'd be cool to have one of those and bring it from house to house whenever I move. Charge the PS controllers without having to have the system going.

It's clean, but I prefer a mini hub connected to a surge strip and standard outlet.
The things that only charge usb tend to be expensive, so I want surge protection.

My phone requires 1A max or it takes forever to charge. It only provides 600mA. I also agree that it should be protected. Cool idea, though.

That's true.. I would agree with that. I'd probably make the time sacrifice though for the ability to NOT have to turn on my PC/PS3 just to charge my camera, MP3, PS3 controller, etc.

How much do you think they put into surge supression on the v reg? I'm sure there's some, but I'd also bet there's not nearly enough. It is clever and nifty, but I'll trust my expensive electronics on a surge suppressed usb hub.

That regulator won't do anything for a lightning strike. If you're lucky, it'll act as a fuse. Also, if you want to charge your USB stuff without turning on your computer, they have devices for that. I think most powered USB hubs even work to charge when the computer is off.
