I clicked the link to that guy doing the black then white.
I fail to see how spending a ton of time and $650 is a "bargain" especially since he did it twice which puts him at $1300 and a ton of work/prep/time when you can get a nice paint job for 2 grand

I thought that one of the benefits of plastidip was that it isn't as sensitive to prep. That's the time consuming/pain in the *** part of painting a car.

How did you come up with that number? with $650 you can buy their gun and about 8 gallons of dip. The club roaster mentioned he dips car for a job and used left overs.

From what I read all you have to do is make sure that the paint is dirt and oil free. You can plastidip right on top of the clear coat.

Yep. Wash your car real good, and your good to go. Because it peels off you can just spray over the windows and everything. Just pell it off or use a rag to rub off spots. You can do it at home with very little equipment, and doesn't take much time to dry. If you have a good paint job on your car already you could use plastidip to protect it and have a new look until you peel it off.

A guy on my local forum plastidipped his car and it came out really well. I saw it in person at miatapalooza and I liked it a lot. He started it out matte but a week ago he added glossifier to it. Here is a link to the picture thread he posted shots in:

Tampa Bay Miatas • Login

It is the navyish blue car with the black top. You can't miss it. He had his done by a shop and I think it cost him $500. If you do it yourself you could easily do it for cheaper.

EDIT: Hold on I did not realize the link is in member's only chat. Let me post the pictures when I have time later.

I got the impression that the guy with the pearl white car did paint work (or Plasti-Dip work) professionally or as a side gig. The first matte black job was done with leftovers, so no cost there.

I also got the impression that Plasti-Dip was not as sensitive to prep as paint but if you want the best results, prep matters - especially if the base is shitty as his appeared to be.

$650 for a high-end DIY Plasti-Dip job versus $2k for a decent paint job seems like a significant difference to me.

I read him say "for only $650 you can......" and used that as the price point.

And comparing a plasti-dip job to a real paint job is like comparing a built miata with ems to a hacked together egay setup on band aids. Suddenly the difference in price doesn't even matter any more.

I guess I can see merit to this if you're bored, have money and time to waste, and want to "change things up" or whatever.

But to substitute it for a real paint job.....Sorry, maybe I'm dense, but I'm not seeing it

Agreed. I love my miata and have put WAY too much time and $$ into it to plasti-dip it. It has horrible paint, but that is just going to have to wait until i can do a proper re-spray on it. I'd rather it be flakey and faded than have plastidip on it.

My DD on the other hand.. very tempting. It's a 94 teg that I use for everything. I drive through feet of snow in it, throw my mountain bike in the back of it, drive down miles of dirt roads with it, go snowboarding in it a TON, etc. It's a beater that I keep mechanically sound. I've been toying with the idea of fixing the few small dents it has and plastidipping it to make it look nice(r).

I don't think anyone would debate a good paint job. However, to be able to easily cover you car in a decent manner for less than 200 with little effort does merit consideration... you know us cheap bastards

So its $200 all said and done? Or is it $650? And how much time does something like this take for a 1st timer.

I'd also like to know. I researched and saw a few people saying about $200.00 to cover a miata. I'd assume under $300 for my honda..

Well it is better to get their kit which includes 3 gallons of dip + gun + misc. useful crap for $300 (link below). On a side note the two gallon kit is ~$240.

https://www.dipyourcar.com/product.p...&cat=23&page=1

Those are the prices. Have you seen the videos of how's it's sprayed on the car? I'd probably estimate about an hour per coat, so 4 to 5 hours for 4-5 coats.

18psi - You love to argue, don't you?

No one is saying a higher-end Plasti-Dip job (like the pearl white one) is a replacement for a decent quality paint job, in terms of quality of outcome. They are just saying, for less than the price of a shitty MAACO paint job (complete with overspray and drips everywhere), the DIYer can buy a full kit - including the tools - and end up with something easily replaceable or reversible.

I would never Plasti-Dip my car and I would never expect you to, either, because your cars all seem to be in good condition from the begining. I would spend the money (2x to 6x as much or more) on a proper paint job.

I would also never buy an automatic Corvette, but that doesn't mean it's a bad decision for some people.

, burn!

Agreed though on all fronts, this is why i wouldn't dip my miata. It's my baby. it's over 23 years old and its a gay car, but it's my baby.

Now my beater teg... i can see this happening. Easily. Looks like a perfect paint job for my purposes. Must be

1) durable
2) look decent from 5 or 10 feet away
3) must make the car all the same color when i fix the front end and various dents.
4) be cheap
5) be easy, only have to prep the areas that I'm "fixing"
6) be diy.

I'm going to properly paint the miata, but i expect the cost to be well over $300.00, even DIY painting it in my garage. And I know the body work will take me much longer, even though the miata is WAY smaller and cleaner than my teg.

If your paint job is ****, why not just spray at it with vatozone spray paint? Reality is it will look more acceptable than plastidip. You will still need to prep the paint whenever you decide to get a real pain job so who gives a ****? 3-4 cans of paint > 300 bucks of plastidip.

The only reason i see for using plastidip is if you want to add decals or something like racing stripes or a dick on your hood and want it removable for when you're ready to tell ur family you really like the dick and dont want to come out as obnoxious.

Who says I would ever do a "real" paintjob on my $800 honda? And honestly, i highly doubt i'd get a finish even close to as good as the plastidip with spraypaint. I've seen spray can jobs, and they look terrible, uneven, splotchy, etc.

If you dont plan on doing a real paint job why not just primer spray paint the whole thing? It would look no different than it would if u were to spray it with plastidip.

Atanas - You think spraypaint would look better than this, for example?
