And the car was driven a couple of hundred miles to and from the event, with the wheels loaded in the back, if I understand correctly.

I am not familiar with NASA TT classing at all, but a quick skim through the PDF linked to below makes it seem at first blush like the right class as TTD seems to be the base class for cars like the Integra Type-AAARRR!, the RSX-S, 240 BHP M-Roadster/Coupe, E36 M3, etc. If anything, the FR-S/BRZ is down on weight-to-power relative to a few of those.

Found the thread by the car owner:

FR-S sets new Time Trial track record at Roebling Road! - Scion FR-S Forum | Subaru BRZ Forum | Toyota 86 GT 86 Forum | AS1 Forum - FT86CLUB

Last time of the day was a 1:20.257, lowering the record another full second!
[Edit]Pretty sure I have managed[/edit] to piece together total mods:
single adjustable BC Racing coilovers
Hawk brake pads (Blue front / HP+ rear) with Motul RBF-600 brake fluid
Visconti tune
Hoosier A6 tires 225/40-17
Enkei RP-F1 wheels 17x8"

This same driver, Jon Miller (Grand Am pro driver and coach), also turned a 1:39.385 at Mid-Ohio at the Nationals. I think it's safe to say he is a hot shoe.

Apparently, he has some ASTs on order to replace the BC Racing coilovers.

The quickest S2000 (Daniel Walters in TTC) ran a 1:19.580.
Next was a TTB 2005 350Z (Joe Ippolito) that ran a 1:19.893.
After that was Miller with a fast lap of 1:20.257 in TTD.

The only cars running quicker than Walters and the S2000 were Corvettes and a Crawford Daytona.

So how do these track times compare with fast street-driven Miatas?

Only 1s difference on Streets CW going from RS3s to A6s? Even with the tire size change I would expect the A6 to be quite a bit faster than the RS3..

He clarified later that there was some issue, but Robi is much better at setting up chassis and turning quick laps than expressing himself via the written word and forum posts.

Robi
I think he is saying that on the day he was there with the Hoosier A6es, he had a mechanical problem. That same day, he ran a 1:25.2 with the Hoosier and a 1:27.9 with the RS3.

The 1:26.2 with the RS3s in the list above was a different day once the mechanical issue had been sorted.

So, same day, same driver, same setup the A6 was a bit over 2.5 seconds per lap quicker but his 1:25.2 time on the A6 was not optimal. That's how I understood it.

Jon Miller setting another TTD track record in his FR-S. This time at Sebring.

Previous record was 2:34.15. I think that was set a couple of years ago by a Rotrex Miata - not sure if it was the car owner or if that was an Emilio guest drive?

Jon ran a 2:31.893.

Bonus bauce points for changing the radio station in mid-lap.

He is making me want to buy an FR-S and drive to events with a spare set of wheels and tires in the trunk and skip the whole engine swap in the Miata + truck + trailer scenario currently in process.

Granted, that guy can drive.

Counting the days before the 86 is base classed as C where it belongs.

I'm not really clear on the NASA classing. Is TTC the base class for most S2000s? Do you feel that the 86 chassis and weight-to-tire is good enough to make up for the weight-to-power difference between it and the S2000?

Mod for mod, the 86 has more speed potential than the S2000.

Notice the guy in the video is in a nearly stock daily driver? The way we prep cars here, a TTD 86 would be 3s faster on that same course. Drop lap record by 6s?

This is the most resounding endorsement of the 86 chassis I have heard to date.

Any data, build threads, evidence to back that up, or is that just your gut feeling?

A lot of the PT/TT track records around the country are basically place holders, held by some hack in an under-prep'd car. Heck, I know of a couple PTB track records here in the Midwest that were broken by a under prep'd car being piloted by a talentless a$$hat. Take the TTD record at TWS for example, multiple cars ran multiple seconds under the old record at the April event.

I'm not saying the FR-S/BR-Z is classed correctly by NASA, not in the least. What I'm trying to say is just because some guy is beating random track records doesn't 100% prove it is. You have to get the car on the track at the same time with other well driven, well prepped cars in the same class.

I think that's relevant, but Emilio is probably basing some of that on his experience on the West Coast, including his testing of an FR-S.

As for the Sebring lap record, it was set by Victor Leo in an turbo Miata. I don't know anything about his setup or him as a driver (other than he holds multiple TTD track records in FL).

I would still say that Jon showing up in his pretty mildly prepped daily driver (driven to and from the events) breaking lap records is pretty significant.

Jon's results make me want to sell my M3, buy an FR-S to track and daily drive (HPDE, not expecting to replicate his results), skip the whole tow vehicle and trailer conundrum I've been wrestling with the past year or so, and turn the Miata in to more of a nice resto-mod toy.

The main thing preventing me is the hope that the next update of the 86 brings a power bump (and eliminates all of the early production bugs).

I know Emilio has tested both the S2000 and the FR-S. I also know he's biased because his business is racing miatas. Like how I'm biased because I race Hondas, one of them an SCCA T3 spec S2000.

I'm not saying it's insignificant that a mostly street prepped car is breaking TTD records, but I wouldn't hold my breath on NASA changing the FRS base class based alone on those results.

He may have a bias for miatas, but that wouldn't influence his statement of the 86 being better than the S2K would it?

He's gonna bring back the 6ULR and try to start developing parts for the toyobaru obviously.

The BRZ/86/FRS/whateverthefuck is on my list to replace our prelude. But wife is getting tired of 5-sp in traffic, so she would probably want an auto...
