Wetsanding...

Well I decided I was going to wetsand the Miata today. I didn't think about doing a write-up or anything until after the whole car had been sanded down and the first pass with the buffer, so I'm just going to wait until I'm finished to post up any pictures. Has anyone else ever wet-sanded their 13-year old paint? If not I highly reccomend it, even though it showed a few little chips in the paint that have been covered up by previous owners with touch-up paint, the car looks 10X better already and only 1 coat of polish has been put on so far. Few more cots of polish/rubbing compound, then wax, then pictures!

I never wetsanded my old cars; i always found just buffing with a mild cutting polish could take out most scratches... gotta be careful not to burn the paint though.

Pics!

I'm not fortunate enough to be able to burn my paint....i have a random orbital buffer, not a straight rotary buffer...oh well it does the job, i got some polish that was far more expensive than i probably should have it's clled invisible glass i believe..but i can only do 1 coat every four hours, but it's got a lifetime money back guarantee if it fails to offer protection as long as you apply atleast two initial coats nd then "periodic recoats" not sure how they determine if you followed that or not, but this shit's awesome, next time i go back out to the garage i'll double check on the name.

I reccomend trying it out next time you buy polish, works great.

I need to do that one of these days... but I have a few rust bubbles on the rockers that need to be dealt with, a bunch of dents/dings/chips that should be fixed, and a cracked front bumper cover from an idiot in a truck. So, I'll likely wait until I have $800 to burn and just take it to a really good shop. Have them fix all the issues and do some touch up painting before THEY polish it for me :)

I've seen n00bs burn paint with a random orbital ;) They put the speed up so high and just go go go.

It's on/off (not variable speed), old, cheap, and slow so not worried about going at it full blast, LOL

Looks good. How long has it taken you? I do a full buff and polish twice a year, and I never look forward to it because it takes me all day.

To wetsand the whole car, then buff the whole thing back out took maybe 3 days working on it on/off, maybe 10-12 hours total.

Both bumpers are spray painted...i did re-spray them temporarily until i can get them really painted, but they definetely stick out like a sore thumb, here's the front:
