yes?

Fireindc 09-17-2012 04:08 PM

y8's, apparently these aren't like your normal maggots and can live off any wet compost pile.

Big maggots in your compost? They're soldier fly larvae | Oregon State University Extension Service | Gardening

Wait, really? That's fuckin' disgusting, you should never put meat in a compost pile.

Faeflora 09-17-2012 04:19 PM

I chrcked and no. No meat.

These soldier flies are very interesting. The hemp of the bug world. I can eat them too.

pusha 09-17-2012 04:22 PM

You're going to eat bugs out of a shitpile?

miata2fast 09-17-2012 04:35 PM

Soldier flys are great. I know people that give them to other fellow composters to seed there own compost pile. They do not stay long unless you have some food scraps in the pile.

I tried them in my mostly yard waste pile, and they never took hold.

interesting.

our "shit heap" is like 4 years old and has never had them. of course we are the laziest composters in the wide world of sports but that's another issue.

good compost: half the shit we throw in it keeps growing.

Haha, good. Yeah sounds alright then. They are kind of gnarly looking, but really interesting if you read about them. Basically harmless and help the compost process.

The question is, can you make ethanol out of them like hemp :giggle:

No. But you could feed the hemp waste product to them and they would turn the uh waste into protein. Delicious soldier fly larvae protein.

I killed one of those in Gainesville earlier this summer. It was like four inches long!

Anisomorpha buprestoides (Southern Two-striped Walking Stick)

This species is noted for its ability to shoot a toxic spray in self-defense. It aims for the eyes and sports an accuracy of upwards to 30-40 cm (~12-15 inches). The spray, if it makes contact with the eyes, causes intense burning and pain. It’s also intended solely for self defense (the species consumes tree and bush leaves, not animals).
Sounds like a good reason to kill it to me.
