What happens when you change oil at 40k?
Umm..Need Advice...VANOS job in progress after 40k on an oil change - Bimmerforums - The Ultimate BMW Forum
This. Discuss. EDIT: Scratch that. Its a 60K oil change. |
I had seen the Jalopnik...but kinda cool to hear the inside forum story.
That is just nuts. I don't know how people abuse their cars like that. Lesson learned I guess. |
Looks like high temp grease in there instead of oil lol
|
ha, just glad it wasnt a repost
|
lol. I haven't changed the oil in my ugly daily in 12k miles, lol. It burns enough that I probably don't have to.
|
Yeah, my Miata burns enough that I just replace a quart after ever trip to FL and then change the filter every once in awhile. It'll be nice when the new turbo is in and doesn't leak like hell.
I can't believe you can go 60k without the motor dying. Was he adding oil once in awhile? I would think with all the sludge there would be no oil left. |
Well, its good that BMW engineered their motors to allow even the most ignorant drivers to drive their cars.
|
60k....how many years without an oil change? Unreal. I've let some crap cars go for 10k at a time, and I had a 4-cyl Camry that leaked so badly I was struggling just to keep oil in the damn thing so I never bothered changing it.
|
Wow.......thats a shame.
Someone asks why it wasn't changed in so long and the response was "the reason why is not important". :hustler: |
My buddy from college got a brand-new company Chrysler K-car back in 1981. On the third day he had it, we took it for a road trip and reached the unavoidable conclusion that it had to die as soon as possible. He started the process by driving it fast through a rocky stream bed in a local state park - apparently bending the front uni-body in the process. Wish I could find the pictures, but it was nearly 30 years ago.....
After that, the car never once saw any service - the only nod in that direction was checking the oil and adding as needed. After 2 years and about 70,000 miles, the car just stopped on I-95 one day - apparently the plugs had fouled so badly that a couple were bridged, and I hate to think what the internals looked like. He got it towed to a dealer, where the mechanics were all horrified(but not entirely unsympathetic). They found out about the bent frame when they tried to do an alignment. His boss got him transferred to an inside job with no car. |
That is just being lazy or cheap. Even if you put a lot of miles on a car, 60k miles would be like 2 years. Even a complete idiot or a woman would know better. He should have his car taken away and be forced to ride a bus.
|
My first 180k miata burned so much oil, I just added a fresh quart every 2 weeks.
|
Im so horrified...

That would still be almost a year. Surely after a 70k mile year of driving you would think maybe it's time for an oil change.

As a matter of fact, sig worthy. Sorry, I'm stealing it. |
Many years ago one of my coworkers brought in an oil sample from a Corolla that was owned by his neighbor lady, and he was showing it around to the guys just for kicks. This was back in the late 90s. She said her car was "sounding funny" and asked him to take a look at it. He pulled the dipstick and asked her when the last time she changed her oil was, and she says "Oh I'm supposed to change that?" Unfuckingbelieveable. The car had not quite 60K miles and almost 5 years on the original oil. I didn't have a digicam back then to document it, but suffice it to say it was unpleasant to know that happened to an innocent engine.

Lol. Not married are ya? Hey, we even have a few girls on this forum and at CR. Haha. God, I love that you correlated the two so closely.

You must be talking about my father in law. He has a BMW 528i and I don't think he changed the oil since April? So he has to have at least 10,000 on since the last oil change. I think the car also has like 220,000 on the odometer. People with that kind of disrespect for general maintenance bother me.
|
10k isn't really that unreasonable with todays oils, I still wouldn't do it though. I'm an old fashion 3,000-5,000 mile kind of guy.
