This has to have some marketing loophole in it somewhere for the results to be as such. Not to say the Cobalt is not capable of ousting a few of the models, just not ALL.
Maybe they had the STIG driving the Cobalt, and everyone else was driving by blindfold with directions giving to them by electrical impulses.
Still hard to fathom....but until then; "It is what it is".

Zabac 10-08-2008 02:48 PM

Chevy is capable of making a badass sports car, the Corvette, why would they not be able to finaly make a badass compact car?
Not defending it, I know nothing of it, other than it is made in the Numi plant which is where Toyota makes their Corollas.
I find this very hard to believe, but maybe it is that time that we all start giving GM some credit. I mean, isn't this what we have been asking of them? To build some cars worth buying, maybe this is it, i just hope it gets less ugly, cause it's hideous right now.

Joe Perez 10-08-2008 03:19 PM

Zabac makes an excellent point. We're all grown accustomed to the major US automaking sucking badly when it comes to compact cars, without recognizing that, for the most part, this is due to their having made conscious decision to suck. I'm being serious when I say this- for eons, the big three viewed small cars as a punative action against the American people. "If you cannot or will not purchase a large sedan or truck, the you shall be made to suffer in these shitboxes."

Well, maybe not. But I do this it's fair to say that they've assumed that a small car must, by definition, be a cheap car.

Who knows, maybe GM has seen the light?

cueball1 10-08-2008 03:29 PM

What amazes me is that some of those cars are highly respectable if not exceptional. Obviously the Evo, Sti, Lotus, s2000 CR are all track oriented. The S5, SRT-8 and is-F are all heavy pigs but with major hp and tricked up suspensions. The BMW with the 300hp twin turbo's and M like suspension should be a good track car.

Well done GM. Make proper performance cars, make them more attractive and people might start considering buying American again. Now if they'd build a small light rwd car with the same kind of planning and effort...

The_Pipefather 10-08-2008 09:04 PM

I dont believe this at all. I can understand it would have beaten the R32, S5, G37, SRT-8 and maybe, just maybe even the S2000, but there's no way in hell it can outdo something like the lotus, STi and Evo. I smell something fishy going on.

cueball1 10-08-2008 11:47 PM

The actual finishing order from the Cobalt on was

Cobalt
Evo
135i
IS-F
S5
S2000cr
SRT8
Elise SC
G37
STI
Caliber SRT4
R32

They were most greatly suprised by the poor finish of the Lotus. Said it was handicapped by the tires. I am really shocked the new STI finished so far down along with the Lotus. The S2000cr is supposed to be a great track car too. Friggin Honda poser car.

johndoe 10-09-2008 01:04 AM

didn't they also have the gtr beat out a z06 and an acr viper or something to that effect in a previous issue, only to have an m3 beat a gtr in an even earlier issue. I don't really trust any of those rags to be consistent. Who was driving these cars?

The S2kcr is a joke, and I do not like the punch line. Ugly looks. Gawdy spoiler. impractical top. I'd rather take a regular S2000 for the $2k less MSRP and invest my money in parts I actually want. Plus, you think a dealer is going to only ask MSRP? Hell no. A dealer isn't likely to over-charge on a regular S2000, so the difference could actually be more than I care to speculate. My point being that I I'd take the money I save and get further ahead on my loan or invest in tires and springs/shocks and enjoy not having a park bench on the back of my Honda like everyone else. God the spoiler just proves that they pay attention to their demographic. "Here, we saved you the trouble and put the left side of a 747 on for you."

Newbsauce 10-09-2008 09:42 AM

S2K CRs locally have been selling for 36k. Shit, you could pick up a low mileage s2k for sub 18k and build a damn monster for that much. Added lightness (42 lbs)?
the samn damn hp/tq numbers as a stocker? Granted you get better suspension, but I think I'll choose a fully built s2k for that price.

cueball1 10-09-2008 01:03 PM

The CR and the Nismo Z are similar creatures. Let's not make any significant changes that might actually cost us money. We'll add some aero bits, stiffen the suspension, make a limited number and call it a high performance version. The fanboys will eat it up!

From it's piss poor finish in this group I'd say Subaru sadly is falling into the same trap with the STI. No way it should finish 10th in that group of cars. They've made the STI too plush and too heavy. They should come out with a purist version of that car about 300lbs lighter.

Hey, Johndoe! I wanna see you put your spool up data in the spool thread! Curious what the difference is between the s4 and s3 mani since our set up's are almost identical except for the mani.

elesjuan 10-09-2008 01:28 PM

I laughed my ass off when I saw the 2000CR was beat by not one, Not two, but THREE 4 door sedans...

I too smell something fishy..Did they put 15 year olds in the other cars and an F1 driver in the Cobalt? Those things are turds, I don't give a shit if it is powerful... its still a turd..

I WANT TO SEE SOME FUCKING BATHURST EDTION CARS.... That is all.

jedduh01 10-09-2008 05:30 PM

Could be a great car, could be Chevy paid the most to the man... We all shall wonder till someone actually buys and races one of these cobalts.

C&d im not a fan of any how for un biased automotive news.

haha well, after never being able to control boost correctly, taking the turbo off to find the wastegate port misshapen enough to not allow the wastegate to close sometimes I sent it back to Begi and I actually got a gt2560r in return. Decided I wanted earlier spool since this is really a street car. This weekend I'm finally going to install it after a month of being off the road. I've been lazy... /threadjack.

cueball1 10-09-2008 08:18 PM

No threadjack. It was my thread to start with!!!

Sorry to hear about the headaches.

cjernigan 10-10-2008 02:23 PM

In the Koni Challenge series the Cobalts have been kicking the shit out of everyone for the past 3 years I believe. Very very impressive.

2002SilverMiata 11-02-2008 01:18 AM

If you listen to the driver, he talks about how the track is wet in a few areas... Did they run the rest of the cars with rain coming down and the cobalt when the rain had barely started? That would make more sense with these results... a nature-provided disadvantage for the rest of the field??

The new turbo Cobalt SS is an entirely different beast than the old supercharged Cobalt SS. Not only is the turbo engine the same basic engine as developed for the Skystice twin GXP/Redline versions (which is damn nice, btw), but whoever mentioned tuning the chassis on the 'ring is right. I have had the chance to drive the new turbo Cobalt (granted not on a "legitimate" track) enough to believe that the C&D results aren't a GM pay-off.

As for Tim's comment about putting the good stuff into the Astra, I wish. The basic drivetrain is already in there in Europe, but I doubt we'll ever see it. Way too expensive to import over here. I'd be surprised if Astras are still selling here at all in a couple years, unless the economy/dollar improves quick.
