What the hell is wrong with the youth of america today?
 

Went to dinner with my daughters Saturday night. My daughter and her husband announce she is pregnant and I'm going to be a grandpa:yippee:

Then my yournger daughter who is in nursing school and just had a class on risky behavior suggested I settle down. Her comments were; You teach SCUBA, you fly halfway around the world to dive with Sharks, you tried skydiving, you went bungee jumping when you took us on vacation, you went white water rafting in costa Rica, and now you are racing cars (she clearly doesn't know the differerence bvetween auto-x and track lapping).

She even suggested I quit running marathons since I am approaching mid-fifties. :nono:

Ya know, if it weren't for the 20 somethings on this board, I would think the youth of america has lost all sense of irresponsibility :bowrofl: You guys are OK in my book :fawk:

Sometimes i want to slap the shit out of the youth of america....damn Emo fags, pop-collar assholes, whores that aspire to be street walkers and mini-me thugs acting like they grew up in some hood. They've caused music to go to hell, tv pretty much sucks (remember when MTV2 was actually cool non-mainstream music?) and most of them are afriad to work worth a damn.

I know that was how I reacted to school.
Man My grandfather was the greatest. He just passed away 2 weeks ago. He was 82 and had his on business and did what he wanted. He loved vacations and stayed healthy.
His brothers and sisters told him to retire, and rest. They can't hardly move and have health issues.

My grandfather took us everywhere. It was like going to six flags when we when to his house. We were always riding horses or fishing. He almost went water skiing at 67, he forgot his shorts or he would of went in. And was healthy enough to do it.

You only have one life, trust god and live it. You will be the favorite grand parent anyways.

+1 on that. I'm 19 and can definitely agree with that. I worked IT for my school district for a year after I graduated HS and can tell you that the comings kids are only worse. I stopped listening to radio years ago and download the few tv shows I want to watch. I'm not sure if the worst product of our generation is hip-hop, emo kids, or the Fast & Furious crowd. Any opinions?

Oh, and congrats GRANDPA! You'd better be bringing the kid to the track in 10 years or so.

My dad grabbed the belt when I did something wronge. it solved a mulitude of problems. i carred a gun hunting at the age of 7. By 9 I could walk out into the woods alone to my spot. Of course my dad was within 100 acres of me. And if I wasn't there. Well that just wasn't going to happen. i would of got the belt.

My cousin's kids. I wouldn't let them have a sling shot and they are in the 9th grade. If they do bad they just get yelled at. Then throw a temper and cry. And they are 14yr boys. I asked him do you wanna dress? Stop that crying or Im going to get a belt. He shut up.

They suck at working. They always play. At 14 I helped with what ever the men were doing. I would of been embarrassed for people to say I was lazy.

None of the above. It's entitlement. Started with my generation at least, if not before. I could feel the rift between the two schools of thought even as a young child growing up- my father was stern with the belt and expected no lip. Because of him, I too had my very own rifle (a pump-action .22) at the age of 7. My mother subscribed to the then-new theories of soft child rearing, anti-corporal punishment, etc. I remember it being a frequent point of consternation.

When I was a kid the grandparents and parents sat and ate 1st. They decided what was on TV. We had to work around their schedule. Kids were expected to respect adults.

Now it's "all about the children". Little Timmy has 32 separate activities every week Mom & Dad have to shuttle him to. They have to attend every ball game, recital or other thing they would avoid if they had a choice. He eats 1st. He rules the TV. Everything is about little Timmy. In China the one child law has created a generation of "little emperors". We have the same thing here. Damn kids think they rule the universe.

The Newspaper had 2 articles on the same page. Article 1 about the crackdown on illegal immigrants had caused a labor shortage in the farming industry. Article 2 was about a new 1.8 billion dollar program to help with the summer job shortage for school age teens. If you could get the kids to actually do manual labor article 1 wouldn't be a problem and we wouldn't be spending billions in article 2.

Funny that's not the first time I've heard that. I guess I don't notice is at much because it's not as loud and annoying as the options I gave.

Hip-Hop is just the '90s version of the same "Godless Rock and Roll" that swept America & the UK in the 1950s/60s. Elvis was just as much of a badass in his early years as fiddy-scent or whoever. Hell, Jazz was supposedly going to usher in the end of western civilization back in the 1900s-1910s. Give it another 20 years, and the hip-hop crowd (who will be in their 30s and 40s) will be bitching and moaning about whatever crap their kids are listening to.

Emo is the new grunge, which was the new punk, which was the new hippie, which was the new beatnik... Just one generation of teen after another dressing funny and acting anti-social. News flash: Teens are angsty, rebellious and emotional! Hell, I'd bet Christ himself probably wore his robe hanging down too far when he was 15.

Fast & Furious? Douchebags. WWII vets and their younger brothers started raising hell on the streets in the late 40s and the pace hasn't stopped since- the cars are just getting uglier.


No, the problem is that for the past 30 years or so, the role of the child in the family has been evolving from seen-but-not-heard, to "we demand a voice", to doted on, actualized, and elevated. As cueball says, the "little emperor."

Sounds EXACTLY how I grew up. Living on a farm will do that. We weren't asked to work. It was assumed. First gun of my own other than BB guns was a .22 for Christmas when I was 10. Glenfield model 60 with the little squirrel embossed in the stock.:) Still have it. We hunted and fished with dad, worked on the farm, worked for the neighborhood farmers as well, walking beans and baling hay. We (brother and I, 11 months apart) started working for the neighbors when we were 7 and 8 for $2.00/hr. By the time I was 10 and he was nine, we were making $4.00/hr. That was HUGE money back in the mid-70's for a 10 year old. Our friends in town were mowing lawns or delivering newspapers for $40/month.:jerkit:

It instilled a work ethic in me as well as taught me how to fix things. When you have a farm, you don't have someone fix every little thing that breaks or needs to be replaced. You were self sufficient.

Well I didnt grow up on a farm, but I got the belt form my pops & wooden spoons from my mom...My mom waited till I did something and pounced, my dad had impecable pre-emptive skills...lol
And I was never given anything...money for a movie? I'd get a list of EXTRA chores/oddjobs and their dollar value...up to me how I wanted to earn my salary...
TV? If I didnt like what my parents were watching WHEN they were watching it, too bad... Dinner? Eat what was cooked--period..Not only that, finish the plate and clean up after yourself!
I'm only 26, but I have a son (3mos old), and although times have certainly changed...the principles are the freakin same man...
IMO the problem isn't complex nor is the solution...Parents need to keep their kids in line...I'm not saying abuse them, I'm saying discipline = the misdeed
I took my dad's car for a joyride at 12, had a black eye and a busted lip amongst other things...AND i was sent to school that way...Never touched it again...You think if I got a "time out" or a "talk" it wouldve been that easy to get it outta my head??

And in my opinion that has ALOT to do with the reason why we have "little emperors"...

Exactly, We fixed everything. I don't pay people to work on things very often. My dad's last talk with me was to make sure I instilled the same things in my little brother that he instilled in me. My little brother wanted a job now that he is old enough for a car. I promissed my dad he would not have a job until he was out of school. He started whinning, he didn't want to mow yards or wash cars. He worried mom until she gave in. I caught wind of it. I told him you are not getting a job and that is it! You can make more money in one hr mowing a yard than you can working 8hrs flipping burgers for min/wage.

I said either mow yards, wash cars, some side job etc. Or give the keys to the camero back.
He worked happly after that. And in 4hrs he made $50. This was friday. He had some cash to chase the ladies on the town, and gas in the tank.
That Mon. he called and was already washing cars. He isn't tied down this summer with work. And he is making more than his friends bagging groc. 20hrs a week.

He has seen the light and likes the money. And he is a great kid.
He doesn't sass my mom either. She has a death pinch. Or if he used a dirty word, as she sayes. She would slap his mouth. People say it is mean. I promise it will only happen once or twice. And never again.

These kids are not taught respect. My dad didn't hit us or yank us up by the hair of our heads. We got it on the butt and it was sufficent.

ps. My first gun was a single shot 20ga. Everytime I shot it, my front foot raised in the air. Lol.... But I didn't fall. LOL. I would go to school and show off my bruised shoulder. I felt like the man.:)

lol i used to mess with air-rifles alot, then squirles hated me...then when i got older i moved up to more high powered rifles, 1911's and glocks :)
