I honestly don't know when this started.

I've got a couple of PCs here in my lab which I use for things like wasting time on the internet. They are connected to the corporate LAN in the office.

Whenever I use Google on either of them, I get redirected to google.ie (Google Ireland). This causes problems when I am searching for something which is region-specific.

It doesn't seem to matter how I perform the search. I can use the auto-search feature in Chrome, I can open IE and type "http://www.google.com", I can even alter the "ie" to a "com" in the address bar after I've performed a search. Doesn't matter. I always wind up getting re-directed to google.ie.

Now, I'll admit to having very little knowledge about this works. I assume that google is looking at my IP address and making a determination where to send me, except I've run a WhoIS on my machine's IP address (we have real-world addresses) and it correctly shows my address as being registered to Harris Corp in Melbourne, FL (the location of our corporate HQ.)


I've tried using OpenDNS (can't make it work on this LAN), I've tried editing my user preferences in iGoogle, and it refuses to let me specify a location that isn't in Ireland, I just don't know what to do here... I really don't want to wind up having to use Bing or some other search engine.

Set your location in the third section.

You need to carriage returns after the google.com. Paste back here what google replies.

favorite sleazy hack:

Modify co-workers hosts file such that google.com is mapped for the IP of booble.com.

Quite amusing, until the co-worker called corporate IT for help, and they told him they would have to format the hard drive. Our corporate IT folks are stunning in their lack of knowledge of their professed field.

One of these machines is a relatively fresh install of XP (just a few weeks old) and I'm fairly certain that there's nothing "mal" on it.

Ah, I just realized that there's a workaround. The tracert revealed to me the address of a domestic google server (74.125.93.104) and putting that into the address window takes me to the US version of google.

This may be late, but you can also flush the DNS cache on your PC.

Open command window:
Type: ipconfig /flushdns (there's a space before the slash)
Press enter.
