what not to do with your new R8

Here's what happens when you cheap out and don't get the "verbal command" option. :D

Saml01 06-02-2008 09:12 AM

What is the "verbal command" option?

No sound at work, so I guess his engine exploded?

rleete 06-02-2008 09:28 AM

He said, "please don't hit the wall!" Obviously, it did.

Stupid car.

paul 06-02-2008 09:29 AM

maybe he did get the "verbal command" option but he forgot to press 2 for english first.

hahaha

Braineack 06-02-2008 09:50 AM

i betcha if he would have at least, i dunno, tried to turn the wheels, maybe it could have been avoided.....I'm not saying I'm the best at aiming my car when sliding backwards, but at least i tired....

that thing lost traction fast over nothing....fail.

m2cupcar 06-02-2008 09:50 AM

^ or it only recognizes german (gray market import). ;)

yes, that was a very long time for hanging on and doing nothing but pleading

Saml01 06-02-2008 10:07 AM

Heres something I always wondered, its probably a stupid idea though. You know how airports have those nets that can catch airplanes at the end of a runway. How come instead of tires and "haaaaaaaaaaaay" they just cant string up a net to catch cars or a series of nets to slow a car down?

paul 06-02-2008 10:08 AM

people need barriers.

if you watch, he aimed the rear straight for it, i dunno if it would have helped, but a few turns to the right, might have saved it.

Newbsauce 06-02-2008 10:28 AM

Expensive ass sports car... terrible driver. What a shitty recovery effort.

Sentic 06-02-2008 10:46 AM

Once he went off he couldn't have done anything to avoid that wall, I've had an off like that, you can turn the wheel all that you want, it won't matter.
Very wierd that he went off though, the car didn't even seem unbalanced.

Doppelgänger 06-02-2008 10:49 AM

someone should have left their ASC in the ON position.

y8s 06-02-2008 10:53 AM

i dunno, steering on grass is pretty pointless. needs more deep sand.

How exactly would that have helped?

He had too fast of an entry speed, and lifted the throttle. Physics always wins.

ASC/TSC/blah/blah. No fucking chance.

If he didn't lift he would have went off the track forwards and still hit the wall. He was fucked, period.

Trying too hard to catch the viper.

slutz4 06-02-2008 11:09 AM

ouch I saw that coming.

Braineack 06-02-2008 11:17 AM

off camber fail.

There really isn't a way to know if it would have helped or not. But my comment was more to be "haha" funny than anything.

m2cupcar 06-02-2008 11:22 AM

I think you'd be surprised at what you can get the car to do in the grass (when it's not wet). I managed to steer a car back on track at 110mph with only one tire. That was enough to get the speed down to around 30mph before I hit the tire wall on the other side. :giggle: I think the point here is that he did do anything... no try = fail4sure.

lol

This is why I track a $1500 miata, and not a $150k car.

jedduh01 06-02-2008 12:00 PM

Thats rough, but thats the chance anyone takes at a racetrack.
Former boss of mine.. thought he was a hotfoot at his sponsored Porsche demo event at that same track. (VIR) . New GT3 CUP CAR hot off the delivery truck, one for his personal collection. Needless to say, Worn tires, Hot brakes, Not enough room first or second lap...Into the wall. He pouted like a baby for an hour on the guardrail. 80k in damages. Absolutely priceless.

levnubhin 06-02-2008 12:10 PM

So do you think his insurance company will cover the damages?

fuck no. Not without a court battle, but Its safe to say that someone on that track had a transponder in the car, making it a race by definition.

Its going to be another world when I get out on the track in a car with some power.

miatamania 06-02-2008 12:23 PM

Ouch.

hustler 06-02-2008 12:30 PM

oh, and I don't like going that fast through sweepers, for this reason.

Vashthestampede 06-02-2008 12:49 PM

lol :bowrofl:

That was awesome. "Please don't hit the wall.....GOD DAMMMIITTTTT!!!" :vash:

Vash-

cueball1 06-02-2008 01:40 PM

Looks like he lost it over a small rise. Car is unweighting + letting off the throttle = off track adventures. You track an expensive car and push limits you have know what it could cost you. It's not like the risks aren't obvious.

Douche bag deserved it for leaving the camera straps flopping around in front of the lens. Geez that was anoying!

Porsche Turbo ate a tire wall at the last HPDE I was at. BMW Z3 with about 25k in performance mods hit 2 walls the time before that. It's a pisser but you gotta know the risks.

Markp 06-02-2008 04:23 PM

Best piece of advice I ever got was, "Kid, Never race anything you couldn't push off a cliff and laugh about later." I have since laughed many times... sometimes were more expensive than others.

Moron + Money + Track = FAIL

Mark

I just realized that I've only seen really expensive cars wrecked at the track. If I were in a lambo and about to get passed by a miata, I'd get brave too...lol.

Zabac 06-02-2008 04:30 PM

That car could have recovered from what i hear about them, the driver on the other hand, not so much.
I just don't see how he lost it, you can tell even in the video that it is off-camber, there is a reason the Viper guy slowed down so much. I guess I just don't get it, was this his first time? How do you lose it and not try to recover, at all. i mean praying is important, but once you are backwards it is too late to pray (well maybe not) but don't just sit there, try something, anything. Sorry, end of rant/

hustler 06-02-2008 04:48 PM

people should be required to drive 90whp miatas on the track for their first track day.

I'm excited to see what kind of lap times I can turn with a fair amount of amateur experience in a car that lived and died on momentum.

heard dat homey.

samnavy 06-02-2008 07:39 PM

Guys who can't afford to wreck their new supercar and take it to the track anyways=FAIL!

You can ball up Miatas all day long and still buy a round for the boys as pennance. When you wreck your car and discover now your kids can't go to college... it's time to get a new hobby.

Arkmage 06-02-2008 09:46 PM

meh... if I got offtrack in my miata I'm going to try to hit ass first. I'd prefer to pull a scott and replace the shell and muffler, then have to replace the whole damn thing with the exception of the muffler.

reddroptop 07-11-2008 04:01 PM

What a fucking amazing car. One of my professors that I do IT for in the DeGroote School of Business (here @ McMaster University) swung by my office today and took me for an hour long ride.

Interior is mint, such a comfortable ride, the most suprising thing is the linear push back into the seat, you think to yourself this isn't that fast at all, nothing compared to a boosted car, and then you look over the speedo and you are doing triple digits after a couple of seconds.

0-60 was easily under 5 seconds even with not the greatest driver. You know the car is badass when hot chicks are gawking and dudes in SRT10 viper roadsters wave.

Looked amazing in white too.

The only car I have ever ridden that was comprable to the speed/comfort/interior was a 996 GT3, and that was only at an autox, so who knows what kind of manners it has on the street.

Cliff notes: Audi R8 = wicked street car, not race car.

mad0953 07-11-2008 06:32 PM

Yeah, that's what he gets for trying to keep with a Viper.....can't be done.

johndoe 07-11-2008 09:34 PM

"Tim Goddamn it!!"
Anyone who talks in the third person is by definition a jerkoff.

arga 07-12-2008 01:51 PM

I was wondering who Tim was. I assumed he was in the Viper. Better to talk about yourself in the third person than to blame someone else for your own mistake.

hustler 07-12-2008 02:58 PM

rich people are funny. If they learned to drive reasonable cars initially, they might respect the speed and grip levels on the supercars they post up at the valet box.
