Default What SINGLE turbo for a SBC?

ok this project is a couple years away, but for my vortec 350(may be a 383 when i do this), what single turbo or range of turbos should i keep my eye on in case a good deal pops up. Needs to keep stong bottom end, have killer midrange and support 500-700whp. i can only imagine it would be t4 based

I like this guy. This will be the next turbo I will use on my Gti.

That is the one that I have been eyeing also for my camaro. I had to sell my other 88mm.

looks like a nice turbo, not overly expensive either, i wonder what spool would be like with a 350 or 383?

Should be pretty good. Just make sure that everything else is up to par like the dp and ignition tuning.

That's easy for a twin, it would be 2 $200 T3/T4 50 trims. Makes an easy 700 WHP and they are cheap cheap cheap. Now if I wanted a single I would likely go with something along the lines of a S475 with it's 75mm inducer or GT4094R.

I gotta thing for T66's on a V8. Takes a minute to spool, but when they spool you need a chute to slow the car back down.

Too small for a 5.7L displacement. Look for a compressor a/r of >1.00. You may want to consider actually doing the math to find the CORRECT turbo for your application.

I don't agree. No its not the end all turbo setup but fits the the original posters modest requirements. Thanks for throwing the snide comment in at the end though.

I'm 34. Not a kid. I wasn't trying to be snide. I'm just emphasizing the importance of a correctly chosen turbo depending on the engine and builder's requirements rather then just listening to opinions or guessing. Sorry if that came across differently.

Use one of these.

I just don't think a -single- 54 trim can flow enough for a 5.7L at say 15lbs. I think it'll max it out before redline or at least give that turbo a workout. 1/2 a 5.7L is 2.85L... That's a BIG four banger it you look at it that way.

Its turbo thats considered often in budget V8 builds. Not huge but will get it done. Like the many that use T25's here.
If it were a build I was doing, I would use a pair of of the turbos I am running on my Gti. T4 60-1 with .69 housings and P trim turbine wheels.

I believe he wants a single turbo. I'm suprised how well those little t25s work on Miatas. I used a IHI vj-11 on my Miata and it was great. It's about t25 sized. 2 .69s would seem about right. On a single turbo 5.7L I'd think .80-1.10 range depending on how much boost he wants. I'd say .80 on the turbine would be enough for quick spool but how well it flows taking all 5.7L of exhaust it might be a restriction. So even myself this is guesswork unless it's calculated. Remember the VE on v8s suck. It's not like a DOHC 4-valve Miata. You really have to cram it in there thru that one valve.

Trim is not what you think it is. So prepared to be schooled just a little.

Trim refers to the ratio between the inducer and exducer, it is only useful in comparing compressors with the same exducers. The 4088 has a much larger exducer than the T4 54 trim you are thinking of.

T04E 54 trim has a 75mm exducer.
The GT4088 has an 88mm exducer.

That means that the inducer of the T04E 54 trim is about 55.7 mm and the inducer of a 54 trim GT4088 should be about 64.66 mm (according to garrett it's 63.5 mm and a 52 trim for a GT4088R and 64.7 mm and 54 trim for a GT4088.)

It's pretty obvious to me (and it should be to you too) that the GT4088 is much larger than the T04E 54 trim.

Mark

I may have misread... You mean the T66 is not big enough, seems like it is for 500-700 HP, after all that compressor is capable of flowing 1000+ CFM.

well the reason i wanted to go for a single turbo is for simplicity but maybe cheap twins would do just as well, this won't be a drag car or truck.......it's just my truck i drive to work, haul motorcycles, pull bushes out of the ground, stuff like that. It weighs about 6000 pounds, has a 3" body lift and 35x12.5 bfg all terrain tires which tip the scales at 69 pounds each for just the tires, also a 4l80e and 4.10 14 bolt rear end, both of which are very stong but not the best ratios especially with my tires for going fast. when i go through with this my engine will be built stong either keeping as a 350 or stroking to 383. only problem with these truck is the stupid spider injector setup with poppet valves that are only 19lb. this would need to be upgraded to the marine intake manifold setup which accepts normal injectors. fortunately all of the tuning can be done inside of the factory ecu so that helps to keep costs down a little bit.

The 4088 shown is only a .74 a/r. Yes that's big in the eyes of us 4 cylinder guys. I calculated out a 3.0L Toyota once and I was at a .60 turbine and .80 compressor according to the maps and the owners requirements. Sort of a big hybrid. I don't work with turbos all day or anything. It's not my Job.

Mach929. Your boosting a truck? Hell throw anything on it then. Here I thought you were building a high performance machine. :gay:

CID = 350
RPM = 6000
VE = .65
394.965 cfm

CID = 350
RPM = 6000
VE = .80
486 cfm

15psi = a pressure ratio of 2.17

I don't have time to do the rest. Go here if you'd like to know how to calculate the engines comsumption/requirements.
