And GPS coordinates aren't good enough in today's day and age where everyone has a GPS capable device in their pocket?

 

Think bigger. Can you remember, off the top of your head, the GPS coordinates of any particular location on the planet? I can remember two.

This is how memory athletes remember huge numbers. They associate numbers or groups of numbers with scenes, colors, sounds, places. A weird mnemonic device that might be the inspiration for the what3words concept.
