For something mild like that I really don't think there is any difference.
The only things I can think of is the catted uppipe innards falling apart and killing your turbo on the 03-05, and the aux pump failing and getting stuck open/closed on the 06-08. Both are known issues though not insanely common. Pick your poison.

Jesus dude, you pick the crappiest cars ever.
The Audi will be a maintenance nightmare, you will end up making a thread about how much it sucks.
The Jag is similar, you will also make a thread about this one.
The Jeep is gonna get like 17mpg. About a year or two after they came out we started to see a TON of 1-2 y/o Liberty 4x4s for sale. If you've never had a car or truck that gets crappy mpg's, let me tell you it sucks for a verity of reasons.

What do you consider a "maintenance nightmare"?

I had a '99 envoy that probably got similar MPG's to the liberty.

So long as its not 15 or lower I'd probably be ok with it. Filling up doesn't bother me, so long as the driving is making me money.

Yeah Audi has a bad rep, but its just a nice simple car with a pretty good looking interior. I could handle that for a DD. I've always like that body style Jag. I have no idea why, but its always pleased me. Not a fan of the wood inside though. The jeep isn't even on my list, it just fits the bill is all.

You have to understand, I've been car shopping since before I made this thread. I'm getting to the point where I'm going to buy something on a whim just to get it over with.

I honestly DONT know anything about these cars. I work on all my own ---- and have a shop/tools/lift at my disposal. Therefore I feel like the "maintenance nightmare" some of you describe isnt all THAT bad. You have no idea the ---- I drive around on a daily basis bro. Trust me.

I guess I'll do some more reading before I jump on an Audi, but yes I'm in a rush to buy. Maybe not today, but sometime soon I need to buy something.

And the "buying things on a whim" thing: would you rather suffer with a horrible car for years to come vs taking a long time to buy a good one? lol

Hondas are great too: have you considered an awd CRV?
What about a toyota Highlander awd?

Therea are tons of others too, though I'm not sure if you'd think they're too boring or whatever.
(to me a dd has to be reliable and efficient/practical. idgaf about how exciting it is)

Vash, I have a 2003 Jeep Liberty sport. It may well be the last Jeep product I ever buy, it's that bad. I wanted a Wrangler, settled for the Liberty.

Cats replaced (under warranty, thankfully) at 80k. Crank and cam sensors before that. It triggers a check engine light at the slighest hint of a problem. A single misfire will do it, which it seems to do 2 or three times a year, for no apparent reason. It eats plugs, being on the third set at under 90k miles. It cut out on me at 65mph on the highway in rush hour traffic. I no longer trust it, and those misfires scare the hell out of me.

It gets crappy mileage. I get 16-17, and that's 60/40 highway/city on the way to work. Best I ever got was 21 on a long trip, open highway with cruise set at 70.

Only reason I keep it is because I'm cheap and it's paid for.

I've been looking for that Legacy GT Limited for a long time now and I just cant find the right one. 3 I liked have come and gone so fast its crazy! Must be good cars. lol

Honda and Toyota would be fine I guess, but I haven't really been looking at them to be honest. Last week I was debating a newer Silverado 2500HD cause one of the guys I work with got one for pretty cheap. I'm all over the board trying to find something I swear.

Boring doesn't bother me. Keep in mind, I WAS driving around my Taurus with no sour puss on my face. DD is DD. Do I want the nicest possible? Maybe. Would I be OK with not the greatest DD ever? Yeah sure.

I wish I was confident enough in business to just say fawk this and go get something awesome. It would surely help keep me motivated and would be a nice treat, but I'm not at that point just yet. So for now I'll settle for something that'll get me from A to B......and preferably has heated seats. lol

Yeah, basically you're just not really looking hard enough or something is wrong.
Its not that hard to find a car/suv/wagon to meet all your criteria and budget.
There are literally dozens of makes and models to choose from, all of which will be better than a POS audi or jag or jeep.

OP, I used to be on the VW/Audi bandwagon. I used to have an mk4 gti, my best friend, and cousin have mk4 jettas, and my grandmother has an A4. All 1.8t's, manual trannys, and the A4 has quattro. Every goddamn one has a boost leak and the cel keeps tripping every five minutes. Every one I've had to replace a window regulator or fiddle with the window electronics at least once (broken solder joints, etc). Between the four of us (only including my year of ownership), we've easily spent $2000 on hoses (it may not sound like much, but it's a severe pain in the ass since every hose costs $40-$80), gaskets, and boost pipes alone. I've gone through 3 alternators and 3 fan control modules in the past two years. Two had cracked oil pans (we'll chalk that one up to women drivers). Two have coolant leaks literally every other month. In one of them the coolant temp gauge flickers and shuts off after a long drive (all the other gauges on the same IP are lit and are fine).

It's unlikely they will ever leave you stranded and you're obviously more than mechanically capable to take care of an A4, but you don't want to spend every other week under your DD. Maybe the vr6 motors are better (I wouldn't know, but I will say they obviously have a lot less vacuum lines), but if I were you, I would stay the hell away from a VW/Audi. Especially since B5 A4 automatics are apparently known for not standing the test of time.

I almost forgot about the best part: VW makes part revisions and engine code changes every 5 minutes. So it makes ordering parts online hard and even harder to get parts from the dealer since the parts guys are generally brain surgeons.
