Another problem with the M16/M4 is that they like to jam.. a LOT. You really have to stay on top of your cleaning and maintenance and even then you'll get jams and double-feeds pretty regularly. My last range (with an A2) my rifle double-fed so often that I ended up trading it out, re-zeroing, and firing all over again with my buddy's weapon. The best part was that it was drizzling all day and it was 40* out, so by the time I got around to doing my final firing with my frozen fingers I only got 29/40. Yay!
The M16A1 Jams alot. I will admit this is a problem. Some of the earlier A2's has some jamming. But the GAU/GUU's are awful for jamming. All other non full auto varients seem not to jam that much. (We now have burst.) I Have not had one FTE/FTF with my M4, but maintaining it is paramont, as it is with any weapon. And I have fired well over 5000 Rounds with mine. (I'm Security Forces though, so we get to fire a little bit more often.)
As for what special forces carry now, they are starting to carry SIG's in 9x19, and 40. I wish we would just go have to the 1911's it would make more sense. The M9 is a POS that jams more than a ******* high point with blazer brass. And the fixed sights are crap. I will say though, they are easy as **** to take apart and clean.

Using +P can **** you in court if you ever need to use your firearm. They will claim that you carried excessively hot ammo with the intent to kill, no defend. Several lawful shooters have been jailed over the years almost entirely for their choice of ammunition.

Thanks for the info, but on the advice of my CHL instructor and my lawyer I don't want to carry +P rounds.

Interesting considering my CHL instructor advised, *with smaller caliber weapons* (read: .380, .38, 9mm), we get the hottest load for the weapon we could buy over the counter. The "avoid at all costs" ammo he mentioned was handloads.
Mentality for his approach was (a) non-violent conflict resolution, (b) evacuate the area, (c) violence short of pulling the firearm, (d) draw the weapon and announce intent, then (e) fire if necessary, but if necessary, shoot to end the event. (Steps (a) through (d) can (and should) be omitted if in deadly jeopardy.) - Summary, avoid drawing, much less firing unless there is no other option. If all other options are exhausted, make the shots count.
From a ballistics point of view, +P .380s are going to improve the shooters odds, but even with the added punch will not match 230-grain JHP .45s...

thats stupid. you don't shoot someone to hurt them, you shoot to completly stop them. i was told in my CW class that the ONLY time you shoot is when you think you or someone else is going to die. not "i just want them to stop, so i shot him in the knee with my target ammo"
The problem is that there are too many liberal ***** in this country who don't understand this. Sadly most of them are lawyers who defend scumbags in criminal/civil suits.
Personally, If I think standard off the shelf HPs won't do the job I will carry a larger caliber. Hence putting the 9x18 in the gun room instead of my pocket.

I agree entirely.

Thanks! Definitely a dream job and I know I'm extremely lucky. I'll try not to screw up anything important. And I can imagine the gun stuff being addictive. When I first got into paintball I couldn't stop buying random crap that I only used once or twice.

Ben,
Of the 2 guns you listed, I would pick the Ruger since it is a bit more reliable However, neither would be my choice for a carry gun. I would recommend going for either a Glock, XD or an M&P. I have competed with each of them and they are great guns for the money. If you shop around, you can find them at reasonable prices. Also, as you make your decision, keep in mind that smaller guns tend to recoil more than full size ones. Individuals whom I have taught always find this as a surprise when we shoot the pistols back-to-back. Last thing, if it's comfortable in your hands, you will almost always shoot it better.
I hope that helps.

I wanted a sub compact for concealed carry. I already have a Sig 220 .45 if I wanted to carry something large. I got the Kel Tec belt clip, which allows me to wear the PF9 IWB and I can barely feel it. The KT also fits perfectly in the center console of my miata, mercedes, and explorer. The Sig will only fit in the explorer's console if it's completely empty (factory cd changer is located in the console), and has no chance of fitting in the other cars.
Next purchase will be some sort of tactical shotgun. Then a revolver. Then I'm done. Maybe.

100 rounds of FMJ and 50 rounds of HP through the pipe. The PF-9 shoots to the right and a wee bit high. I'm a right handed shooter, so that's of no surprise. Not a single problem to feed, fire, and eject.

next purchase...
Opinions sought on .40 standard size:
Glock 22 or Springfield XD or XD(M)
Leaning towards the G22 used with Trijicon sites, Laser Max Internal, and 3 mags for $500.

I figured this thread was going to be revived soon after seeing your post about bying a glock in another thread. If you've never shot an XD before..DO IT before you buy a glock, you'll change your mind, guarantee it.

Everyone had something to say about kel tec vs ruger, but no one has any info on glock?
Whatev. I bought a former LE G22 w/ Trijicon sites, (3) Hi-Cap mags and a guide rod laser.
I figure a police trade in weapon would be very well maintained as most departments have a professional armorer. Plus glock has unbelievably good warranty and customer service if issues ever do arise. I got a good price on the package, and I'm going to also get a little tac light for the rail and keep the thing on my nitestand.
And just for the record, I bought it even though my good friend/ex special forces operator/gun snob friend said that he wouldn't trust his life to a glock because he's such a SIG fanboi.
