Ahh, the future of this great country is very bright indeed. I will always be able to afford lawn care services if these illiterates continue to ooze out of our public schools year after year. The pass rate for the FCAT (our standardized basic achievement test in Florida) for reading comprehension for tenth graders was about 38% this year (down from 42). And as lousy parents continue to fail their children in their responsibility to prepare them for success, we will continue to have a ready supply of unmotivated unskilled labor just "getting by." I guess this is where ricers come from...

^^ I've been saying that since it came out. It really exposes how dumb people are getting..mostly in America.

That's exactly why that movie is just down right scary.

Let me say that again, just for the record.

What The Fuck?

I've only just returned to FL after being away for 10 years, so I'm not terribly familiar with this test. It looks like each part is scored from 1-5, with anything 3 or above being a pass.

Looks like my old Alma Mater came in at a measly 40% pass rate in 10th grade reading comp. No surprises there. The school was filled with drooling rednecks and incompetent teachers when I was there, and apparently nothing's changed.

Still, words can't even begin to express the magnitude of my disgust here.

Oh, and +1 on Idiocracy. It's a bit slapstick in places, but under the brightly-colored plastic surface that film is scarily prescient.

Every human needs to see this film.

I could understand only 38% Excellent scores....but EVERYONE should be passing.

I didn't realize things were this bad. I probably should have known, but maybe being on a college campus most of my waking hours has shielded me.

We are in trouble folks...big trouble.

People are given too much shit these days (not given shit like that, but given things too easily). What happened to hard work with a payoff. Today kids are pretty much pushed through school even if it is clear they need to learn more. Good grades aren't enough, you need to understand the work too, or you will be useless once in the real world. I think test standards are WAY too easy. I never made great grades in school, but thats only because I didn't care. I took my GED at 16 and passed it very easily the first time with no studying what so ever and what shocked even then that it could be that easy. I bet Alabama's comprehension is low too. It shows when you go out in public and see some of the people walking around like they left half of their brain at home. Drooling, talking on their cell phones, stumbling around buying stupid shit at the store. Anything less than 60% (or preferably higher than that) is embarrassing.

+1 on Idiocracy. Bad movie, but I still could see America being like that in less than 200 years if we stay on the path we are on now. I hate to do it, being as I love technology, but I think its partly (or mostly) to blame for people becoming more stupid. People don't have to think anymore, they can just pull out their do everything device and never have to flex a brain cell.

If everyone were passing, it would render the test meaningless. There is always going to be some wheat and some chaff. Unfortunately, we just have a lot of chaff down here.

I remember high school...man there were some dumbasses. Wouldn't 10-15% failure be a little more in line though(EDIT: if we were properly educating our students)?

If it's like our standardized tests here I know it's too easy. My sister and I both had to speak with prinicipal and admin back during the days of the TAAS test because I missed one question and she scored perfect. They said that just didn't happen...unless you cheated. What a joke.

I wonder how FL stacks up to the rest of the country. I went to private school in NYC. 98% of enrolling freshman graduated AND WENT TO COLLEGE. The other 2% were kicked out long before that. There was no getting left behind, you either passed or went some where else. I'm really nervous about when my son has to start school, I just have this feeling that schools these days just makes kids worse.

My daughter is only 2...but we're already thinking about how bad it's going to be.

My family started home-schooling after my sister and I, and each of my younger siblings have gone to out of state private universities with a full ride.

I know how much a bad rap home-schooling gets, but if done right it seems like a great option.

I'm torn there...

My niece, who is now 4, will probably be getting home-schooled. She lives in a sufficiently rich environment that I'm not so much worried about isolation (my sister and her husband, my mother and her husband, and my maternal grandmother all live under one roof.) It's just that the couple of people who I have personally known, in their mid to late 20s, seemed somehow weird. Socially underdeveloped maybe. I can't explain it.

My high school had both AP and IB programs. I was one class shy of starting college as a sophomore due to all the basic 101-type classes I tested out of. I'm not a smart man, but it sure as hell made sense to take a $200 45minute test on shit I already knew rather than spend a semester learning the shit again.

During my junior year of high school, there was a computer fuckup and I accidentally got placed in a regular history class. There was such a huge division of kids in honors classes and regular classes that I only knew about 2 of 30 kids even though I'd been going to school with all of them for about 5 years now.

This was the fucking 11th grade, and there were kids that didn't know what July 4th was about.

I went to bed at 8pm until I was 14.
I didn't have a TV in my room unless I was getting at least a 3.5.
My dad whupped my ass when I needed it.
I played the sports I wanted to and they came and watched.
My first car was an '81 2-dr piss-yellow Volvo.
I wasn't allowed out past midnight... ever.
I had part-time jobs starting when I was 16.

My parents made damned sure I knew that when I turned 18, I was either going to college, or getting cut off... my choice. I never went through the stage where I thought my parents were full of shit or didn't understand me... they did their jobs like parents are supposed to... it was a good childhood. I hope I do just as good with my kids.

Holy Shit!

I graduated HS 23 yrs ago, and havn't looked at math much since then, so I figured I'd suck at it. So for shit and giggles I just took the math section from the link that Joe posted.

I'm right there with ya. It all comes down to how we raise 'em.

By BIL and SIL home school. They have five. The oldest just decided last year to go to high school. It was his choice so that was nice that they let him decide. The next oldest is 7th grade. She may decide to stay home schooled all the way through. Either way, they are VERY well prepared for life.

I used to be totally anti-home school but have changed my mind. The work ethic alone will pay huge dividends when they go to college.

Funny thing...My sister is younger than me, she graduated in '92. One of the HS teachers had a daughter the same age as her. She was home schooled. I guess it was good enough for dad to teach the rest of the kids but the school wasn't good enough for their kid.

I went to catholic school from 1-8 then 9-12. Classes of 20 through grade school, class of 100 in high school. At Grade 9 I was given the chance to go to catholic or public, and I chose catholic. I'm not religious, but for some reason I felt like class size was a big deal.
The lower student to teacher ratio and adding a little bit of morals kind of helped in my opinion. Not saying it was better by any means, but I do know every teacher in the school at every grade level knew my name which kind of kept me in line. All that being said
my kids will probably go to public school if I still live in NOVA (one of the highest rated public schools).
