It was pretty soggy down here yesterday, so no. esp. after just having cleaned it.

wow, she was tailhappy the entire run. Ahhh well, at least it's all back together and no major harm done.

Good job on not freaking out and just cranking the wheel away from the people.

Pen2_the_penguin 01-09-2013 05:13 AM

she took the tip like a champ, if you dont mind me asking; did you replace or repair the front piece and how much was it? This thread seriously makes me think of future track plans.

It happened sooo fast I'm not sure I was processing that thread specifically. I felt the brakes begin to lock and started pumping, and on like the third pump the pedal fell changed dramatically and i buried them in the floor. In the raw video that you can slow down you see this... if my pumping continued to be successful I may have stopped.

I had it repaired and repainted, all together it was 800 bucks. then I spent another 100 or so on dzus fasteners, only about 50 of which i needed to spend if I'd have got the correct parts the first two times. :giggle:

golftdibrad 04-15-2013 10:48 AM

WHOOPS. This is from OCT, car has been back to good for awhile now.

nickt93 04-16-2013 07:11 PM

Damn - glad everyone was alright. I keep thinking about how much worse that would be at high speed, say entry to turn 10A at Road Atlanta.

18psi 04-16-2013 07:57 PM

lol are you just going insanely fast or does that thing plow harder than a bulldozer?

not on the best tires, for a reason, and it still has some handling, uh, 'personalities' that require adjustment :D

ACiFiC 04-16-2013 09:18 PM

haha thats crazy. probably should have had that helmet strapped on :P glad everyone is alright though!

triple88a 04-17-2013 02:52 AM

Sup with that camera? Almost looks like its just placed on there.

It was my gopro; I used the sticky-pod to attach it to the helmet. My helmet didn't fly off.

Standard rear engine weight imbalance. Needs engine in front of rear axle. I've had a few Manx-style dune buggies and two short wheel base rail buggies and they all try to kill you in corners, and when braking, and when on the throttle, lol.

its a 914 drivetrain, so its a midengine setup. 90+% of the engine/trans weight is in front he rear axle

vehicular 04-17-2013 05:27 PM

Plus 100% of Brad is in front of the rear axle.

it sucks when your like 20% of the vehicles mass. true story bro :brain:

vehicular 04-17-2013 05:41 PM

I've been on a Ketosis diet for a few weeks, and it's working out great. Just saying.

Funny you say this, as it's one of the things that bothers me about normal cars. Even with the Miata, the ratio of "me" to "car" being moved around seems ridiculously askew. Why do I need to waste all that power and energy pushing 2,100 lbs of car around, when the only thing I actually care about is the 200 lbs of me and a few additional lbs of cargo that I happen to be carrying?

Obviously the situation is even worse when dealing with larger vehicles, SUVs, etc. Much has been said about the inefficiency of otto-cycle engines, wherein only a small fraction (perhaps 30%) of the potential energy of the fuel is converted into useful mechanical power.

I find it far more offensive that of that mechanical power, only 5% is used to move the occupant of the vehicle, with the remaining 95% being used to haul around the relatively useless dead weight of the vehicle itself.

It's one solution, albeit one that I acknowledge to be unacceptable to most.

Small, light cars would be another.

Now, this is where shit really starts to get weird, IMO. So far as I know, the Smart Fortwo is the smallest car you can buy in the US right now. Seems like this would be a radical step in the right direction, no? I tell you- that little fucker weighs 1,800 lbs and only gets 36 MPG. How on earth is that even possible? It's probably got the highest mass-to-volume ratio of any car ever made, and the poorest economy-vs-size ratio of any hardtop vehicle in the past 20 years. I can't even imagine how I'd fail that hard if I were trying.

Things were looking bright for a while, though we seem to be sliding back in the direction of big-n-heavy again. At 24 MPG, the total average fuel economy of the whole US fleet is exactly 1 MPG poorer than that of the original Model T in 1913.

When I look out at the parking lot of the lab where I work, I see two pickup trucks, one Chevy Suburban, one Ford E150 van, one supercharged Merc SLK, one Toyota Sienna, and a dozen or so large four-door sedans. Plus the one empty spot where my Miata would be if I hadn't biked to work.

18psi 04-20-2013 02:02 PM

completely agree
I lol'd many a time about the Dumb Fortwo
Have you seen how tall they are? I bet their coefficient of drag is worse than a truck

Joe Perez 04-20-2013 02:12 PM

Sorry, didn't mean for this to be a threadjack. The present-day state of automotive design just pisses me off somethin' fierce.

Braineack 04-20-2013 03:18 PM

the steering ratio looks like it sucks too....and your passenger really want to lose an arm.

trust me, its cool by me. I like good discussions with smart people.

Current auto design updets me too. a beeter way exists. the cat that is my forum namesake was 3200lbs, fit 4, had cargo space, and got a no bs 48mpg hwy and about 38 around town with me using lots of full throttle. And it was not a SLOW car.

Also, I'm probably selling the green car. Asking 25k. I need to simplify my life some.

vehicular 04-22-2013 05:58 PM

I don't think there's anything simpler than the green car...

well, simple as in easy to drive, race, etc. And I'm tired of the flashy car too. Sometimes, i just want gas and don't want to answer the three questions.

golftdibrad 04-24-2013 09:32 AM

It has a tuned up Porsche 914 motor
- 1.7l case with 2.0 crank
-103mm jugs and pistons
-2.4 liters, fresh build ~2500 miles
-SCAT c35 cam
- Deep oil pan for extra cooling and capacity
-NEW dual Webber 44 IDF carbs
-MSD Ignition
-901 transaxle from 911/914
-axles and cv’s are high strength EMPI units

The suspension hard parts are from a Pontiac Solstice or Saturn Sky
Shocks are Ohlin’s

The frame was made around these parts by a fabricator and Porsche master mechanic in Kentucky. His shop is called Speed Inc; he has made several chassis.

The car corners like magic. 0-60 time is about 6 seconds. Simple air-cooled reliability.

Summary:
-skystice suspension stuff
-1400 lbs
-120 HP
STREET LEGAL GO KART.
needs nothing ready to drive and show off!

can you show the extent of the damage from the "incident" you had, and how it was repaired?

The pics are on page 9. I paid a local glass guy to sand/grind out the crushed sections and re-glass/fill/paint the nose.

I had just had an alignment, and went back after the incident and it put up the same numbers with no adjustment. The front tube was not hurt at all save for the tiniest flat spot....so small maybe its just an imperfection in the powder coat. So that and some new dezus fasteners and she is good as new.

What's your asking price on the green car?

Asking 25000 obo. one may be surprised to know how much less I'd take as a percentage of that asking price, but aim high right?

golftdibrad 05-06-2013 09:41 AM

anyone want a green car? I'll trade you for a miata plus cash
