Default Why is there no downtempo/chill/trip hop on FM?

I know a lot of people who like down tempo, and a lot of restaurants play it. Why is it nonexistent on FM? Other than 1 college, 1 jazz, 1 classical, and 1 classic rock station, FM is just full of pop and hip hop crap.

No, I'm not over 50. Do only >50 people hate what's on FM?

Since Pandora (among many) gives you the option to listen to any genre you want, who is listening to FM.

Having been a satellite radio subscriber for 3+ years now, I cannot fathom owning a vehicle without Sirius/XM radio at this point.

This!

Radio stations only play popular music because that's what more people will listen to. Advertisers will pay more if more people hear their ads.

Chill is just not as popular as Rock/Country/Rap.

Some college stations play a more eclectic mix. I used to listen to Rice university's station allot, before I got satellite/Pandora.

What is this "radio" you guys speak of? Is that like where you attach an antenna to your TV?

Basically what everyone else is saying: by now only old people and young broke kids either haven't discovered, or are too broke to afford other means of streaming music.

I still listen to FM.

I wonder why there's no 80s or good rock channels.

So I listen to Sean Hannity.

They recycle about 10 songs all day long on the popular FM stations. Most of which are terrible. Its truly garbage. Only time I use FM radio these days is to listen to morning talk shows on my way to work, about 2 of which are still decent and don't totally suck. Interestingly talk shows keep me awake much better than music at 4am..

Just invest a couple hundo in a modern headunit.

My question isn't "how do I listen to the music I like".

It's "how can there be 20 stations of the same crap and they all make money and none make money playing downtempo"?

I guess a related statement would be: I suspect that the music on FM does NOT represent the actual spectrum of the distribution of musical tastes of the population. e.g. 95% of FM is pop/hip hop, but only 70% of the population like it.

I remember Joe's fascinating thread about that company that developed a system to determine what type of music listeners actually listen to, and there was a lot less hip hop listening than surveys showed. I wonder if hip hop is still over-represented.

How many of you guys use internet streaming while driving?
(Right now I mostly fill up a USB stick with music I like and listen to that while driving)

BTW I am a paying subscriber to both Pandora and Grooveshark (which predates Spotify).

Spotify has a shockingly-rich library for this kind of music. I also listen to Dogglounge Radio on the phone.
