window tint pointers
My dear MT.net community of experts:
A few of you must have knowledge in the art of window tint. I want to try it on my subaru. What do I need? How do I do it? Pointers? Yeah I know I should pay someone to do it but I'm anti paying someone to do anything and tint is cheap to try. I can follow the directions on the box...besides that, any other cool tricks? *Thanks In Advance* |
I did my own. I think they came out pretty good for never doing it before.
I got the tint off ebay for cheap. Spray bottle, soapy water, squeegee, razor knife......I think that's all I used. Do it inside or at least in the shade. Spray plenty of soapy water to keep things from sticking. I don't remember exactly, but there was a special way to use the squeegee. Something like from the middle out, top to bottom, etc etc. Its pretty easy, but I did have the guy down at my shop do the hardtop. I wasn't about to fuck around with that thing. I have some pictures in my build thread, maybe some details but I cant recall. Good luck dude! :bigtu: |
From my last tinting esperience:
Get a paint stirring stick from home depot and tape it to the side of a flat box cutter. This will allow you to get nice even cuts along the edge of the glass. |
i tint windows. well the cheapest way is to get a spray bottle and use a drop of johnsons baby shampoo with mostly water. then use a credit card and a little rubber wedge, i got mine from a tint start kit. also get a bunch of single razor blades you can hold with one hand. not like a utility knife deal.
you then need tint. the best way is to get the nice quality tint off line that is pre cut and has a warranty (costs a bit more but worth it). you can also get the cheap crap stuff at like wal-mart but it will go bad after while and bubble more. then keep spraying the water mix all over the outside of the window and the inside of the window. lay the tint on the out side of the window, cut it, then peal it and move it to the inside of the window i would say unless you plan on doing like 4 or so cars a year i would just get the pre cut stuff off line and do it that way |
Don't skimp on low-end tint
Unless you want to do it again in a year |
Thanks for the replies guys!
I got the most expensive tint that my dad's shop could get, has all the UV protection and says it's thicker than most, bla bla bla. only one roll so far to see if I'll be capable of doing this. How do I get the tint below the lower window seam? Must I take off the door card or do you just slide it under there while soapy? That seems unlikely. |
