Wrecked my Miata... Miata + trees = crushed tin can

I drifted this thing before, so I was "OK". I came around a turn... no one in sight... :D Got up to about 40mph, left off the throttle turned, put a little gas, got about 170 degrees, then I noticed a car coming towards me a little too fast, I over corrected the steering wheel, car oversteers, then the rear end snapped, I push in the clutch and begin braking slowly, then it began understeering bad... I hit a concrete barrier, my Miata jumped about 2 feet into the air... and then I saw trees... so many TREES!!! :crx: I clenched my teeth, and my buttocks for impact, my buddy close to shitting himself. We hit this giant oak tree, my front bumper wraps around the tree, and as we learn in Physics, there plenty of momentum so my car is deflected off the tree and we hit another tree... this time shattering my driver door glass and crushing my door in...

I take a moment to take everything in. There's God-knows-what spewing out of my hood, broken glass, debris, a little bit of blood, I'm in cold-sweat, adrenaline pumping, ears ringing and going blind in left my eye. My buddy said, in the most non-nonchalant tone, anti-climatically stating the obvious, "This is what it feels like to be in car-crash.":bang:

My friend opens his door, and we both exit through the only working door at this point. We survey the horrific damage...
1.) My Miata's front end is caved in, hood is permanently latched on, cracked windshield.
2.) My A/C is gone for good, Koyo radiator bent in and leaking copious amount of coolant.
3.) My door looked like it was rammed in my a charging Rhino...
4.) And over all, my Miata looked like a crushed tin can.
https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/mem...ums/51/250.jpg
https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/mem...ums/51/178.jpg
https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/mem...ums/51/249.jpg

Then a cop rolls by, I explained to him that I lost control of my vehicle, receive a Wreckless Driving Ticket, and I call a Tow Truck to drag my Miata back to my house. I then told my mom that I had killed my car and she's sighs, telling me that I had wasted all my money on the car...

So instead of wallowing in Despair, I take apart my car the next morning, cut off the bumper with garden shears, pry apart the hood latch, remove the radiator, a/c radiator, lines, heater core, turbo, piping and all the knick-knacks. Fashion a new driver window from plastic lying around my house which I screw onto the door. I get the car running long enough to drive to the court house, pay my fines, and beg for forgiveness.
I go to a body shop who estimated about $2500. I said "Fuck it".
And then I join Turbomiata.net. I buy a new hood(old one flew off in highway), bumper, door, intercooler(which I was going to buy anyway), piping, ssq bov, emanage blue and repair my radiator, waterpump and remove the a/c compressor/housing. I'm still installing everything, but the car runs fine... it's even a little lighter without A/C.(That's a optimistic way of looking at it)

After about $400... here's my Miata now.
https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/mem...ums/51/251.jpg

92' Miata, Greddy 15g-TD40-h compressor, Vortech 12:1 FMU, 305 injecotors, Jackson Racing plug wires, Bosch one step cooler plugs, 5 degrees from base timing 10psi(ic not installed yet),no brain(emanage not installed yet), leaky bov(hks ssq not installed), manual boost controller, no A/C, Spec Stage 3 carbon/metallic clutch, 8lb. Fidanza, tranny brace, comp. engine mounts, Koyo Aluminum Radiator, Koni yellows, racing beat springs, all aluminum 15" rims wrapped in Azenis rt-615's(30% tread left)

Stein 02-19-2009 08:52 PM

That's some pretty good fixin' for $400.

m2cupcar 02-19-2009 08:59 PM

The nice thing about race tracks is it's nearly impossible to hit a tree after you fuck up. I agree- good job with $400. I think you need to 1) buy a real roll bar 2) start a DD fund and 3) start doing sanctioned events when you've got a DD in your driveway.

Glad your passenger was ok and you didn't kill anybody else. Hope you learned your lesson.

pdexta 02-19-2009 09:07 PM

Glad you're alright, could have been a lot worse for sure.

JayL 02-19-2009 09:10 PM

If there's anything that I can do to make your car faster, just let me know. The next time you hit a damn tree I want to make sure you're going fast enough to kill yourself.

kotomile 02-19-2009 09:24 PM

Lesson learned, good repair for $400. Keep that shit off the streets, one day you might be the guy in the sedan with his baby in the backseat coming the other way, and you'll have a different outlook on acceptable risk.

******** in a miata = dumb

******** on the streets = even dumber.

Hope you learned... i sure did:
Attachment 208039

dumb highschool mistakes...
yes that was with a nearly stock KA. i swapped the SR out to make it easier for emissions. (front mount was still bolted on the car !!!)

wayne_curr 02-19-2009 09:34 PM

Well we all make mistakes I suppose. Luckily yours didn't ruin anyone else's day but your own. Good repair work, shitty driving. It sounds like you did learn your lesson though...

Edit: Frame must me more crooked than my penis...

pdexta 02-19-2009 10:12 PM

You guys are so judgmental. I'm sure none of the people bashing the guy have ever made a poor decision before. I know I've had a few "woah" moments while driving that could have just as easily gone the other way. He admitted his error and took it upon himself to fix the damages. What more could we possibly ask?

Agreed. That's why I only commented on the good fix for $400, as it was the only positive of the whole post.

Guess you've never had a friend killed by a careless or reckless driver.

He could have killed his passenger. Or a pedestrian. Or anyone else on the road. There's too many morons on the road that don't have respect for others. The OP is LUCKY he's still alive and not in jail for killing his passenger or someone else. I can only hope this has been a huge slap in the face. In the real world you don't play again when you fuck up.

Comon dude, you're a pussy unless you drive everyday like it's a level of Burnout.

:ughug:

Did we hurt his feelings? What about his self esteem? :jerkit:

I know I wouldn't care about either if he had hit my car, especially if my daughter was with me. God help the person who is fucking around and crashes into my car because he thought he'd have some "innocent" fun. Driving fast in a straight line on a highway is one thing, buttsexing around an (apparently) blind corner with (apparently) oncoming traffic is another.

OOOoooOOoo called out!

I cant agree more, we have all done stupid shit before. I say 8/10 people have driven when they know they've had too much to drink.

Until someone changes lanes in front of you, or you have a blow out. Both are equally stupid. I'm not defending the OP, just sayin what he did is no less dumb than what I'm betting most of us have done, me included.

I was waiting for someone to post that. Sure that was dumb too, but I was in control and not putting others at risk. I had no passenger for starters. I was driving in a straight line divided highway, not ******** around a blind corner with a passenger on a 2 lane road.

Good point. I'd like to point out though, that cars were designed to drive straight, and not designed to be buttsexed around corners by teenagers.. :)

ROFL.

Glad you and the passenger are OK...like everyone else said it could have been a lot worse.

Future_Ls1_Miata 02-20-2009 12:03 AM

ahhh, I didn't think I would cause so much tension

I had a perfect driving record before this, and I rarely(I mean rarely! do spirited driving), especially with a passenger(240sx driver). I definitely learned my lesson and 95% of the time I'm driving the speed limit. Highways are another matter.
My buddy and I usually go to deserted parking lots... preferably without light poles, or go to backroads if we ever want to practice.
I was pretty confident until now, so I've decided to never drive crazy on public roads again!

Thanks for all the comments... it shows me that you all care....awwww:giggle:
240_to_Miata_driver.... now I know what happened to your 240. My friend is thinking about going the Ka-T route versus the overdone sr20 swap. Ka's are essentially truck motors with very good torque and response. Now turbo that, and it'll be a pretty killer car. It handles pretty damn good as well(Not as good as a miata! [stock suspension anyway]) ;)

kotomile 02-20-2009 12:53 AM

Good to hear man, glad you're ok.

what miata? 02-20-2009 12:59 AM

Drag racing on the street is just as dangerous. And i dont understand the statement that cars are meant to go strait? You dont have a steering wheel.....
we are all or most of us guilty of testing our car on the street. No matter ******** or drag its dangerous. It just a blessing that nothing happened and hoped that the man learn from it. Im sorry but i had to post on this one.. but pats you cant say you drag racing on the highway is any safer than ********. And unless you had the highway closed down for you that night you race all those cars you said you did, than you are putting peoples lives in danger also.
So i think the people bashing on the guy should think about what there doing before typing..... Im no saint my self i use to street race heavy, had a friend killed in a street race. That really hit me hard, so i try my best not to speed or test my car around other cars. Thats life you learn and move on.. I hope that this guy saw that he could have killed him self, his friend , and the motorist that was in the picture. And its not worth it, if you want to put your self at risk go somewhere secluded if you dont have a sanctioned event to go to.(with out your friend in the car) bash up you car all you want.
Anyways im out, i said what was on my mind, feel free talk smack about me if you want

Right - street racing never hurt anyone. :jerkit:

The meaning was apparently lost on you, and maybe on Pat too (plus you've taken my statement out of context). Of course cars aren't meant to only go straight, I worded that wrong and I apologize. Car's are designed to go straight, and to turn. They are meant to be controllable during both of these events. They are not designed to be controllable while sideways, which is part of the appeal of buttsex - it's hard to do, and to do well takes a lot of practice and even the pros have accidents almost constantly. Definitely something to be kept off of the streets.

Hope that clarifies the meaning of my previous post.

Edit - and, potentially, gives someone a new sig quote.

Was the cop drunk too? Because the car in the pictures is quite a wreck ...

speedf50 02-20-2009 03:36 AM

I was going to ask a question about that too, how they hell can he give you a ticket for reckless driving when he shows up after the event and only sees the crashed car? Was he psychic? Did you tell him you were ********?

A cop showed up when I drove my car off of a cliff all he did was call an overpriced towtruck.

Future_Ls1_Miata 02-20-2009 06:16 AM

The Cop

Well, little did I know, I was lucky enough that a cop wasn't far away, he was just cruising, and stopped by to see why there was a bright red Miata smashed into a tree with 2 dazed people just standing next to it.
The officer asked what had happened.
I said I had lost control of the vehicle and he assumed I was "without due caution"... which means wreckless driving.

Braineack 02-20-2009 09:35 AM

Typical. when you drift you need to expect your car when come out looking like shit.

Vashthestampede 02-20-2009 11:23 AM

These threads always turn out fun.

Over my 10 years of driving experience I have learned all too well to keep my self in check. Sure now and then I rip on it and speed, but I don't get up to 120 and just hold it there like I used to when I first got my license. I too have done many a stupid shit with my cars (driving while pissing out the door), but I feel fortunate that I learned my lesson and now watch the other guys get pulled over or crash.

If you wanna practice ******** take it to a parking lot. I used to go out on summer nights, no passenger, no alcohol, no pot, and just start fucking around. Sometimes I would use cones, boxes, light posts, etc to give me some sort of line. Out of the hundreds of times I went out to multiple parking lots to play, only once did the cops bust my nuts.

ScottFW 02-20-2009 11:51 AM

Dibs on the...

Oh crap, he decided to fix it up. :D

Toddcod 02-21-2009 12:06 AM

He still lives home with mom. Glad your ok, I used to street race all the time. I thank god I didn't kill myself or other people. I'm sure my mother and father praying kept me alive.

BUT GIVE THE GUY A BREAK! He fixed his car. He will be smarter next time.
You have to age, and gain experiance for some things to kick in. There is no way any of us would ride with ourselves at 16 on a Sat night.

If you don't experiance something in your younger age, your a SWEET PUSS!

Yea, street racing isnt smart. But we have all done it. Atleast he wasn't drinking That is what I hate. I never drink and drive.

No one said you where 16. ANd you where talking about your mom like you still live there.

I retract my take it easy on him.

Future_Ls1_Miata 02-22-2009 10:42 PM

I was born in an Army base in Korea. When my mom had me, my dad forgot to tell her my name was suppose to be Thomas. When the doctor asked her what my name was, My korean mom said, "Be Young". It's korean. No special significance, except I'm named after someone historical.
