wtf is a "DIY Turbo Kit" besides an oxymoron?
 

something about the phrase bugs me. diy turbo kit.

if it was a kit, you aren't doing it yourself... right?


now maybe there's a DIY turbo manifold kit...
or perhaps a partial kit and you source the rest...

Is getting a manifold/turbo/DP from one vendor, and the IC and piping from another DIY? What if you buy a kid from a vendor but it doesn't fit worth shit and you end up having to modify and tweak it?

What constitutes DIY? Building everything from the ground up yourself? Or is it picking and choosing what parts make up your "kit"?

Dude, there are a lot of things to bitch about in the world that are worthy. This one? Not so much. :)

when this site first started it was 90% greddy users, so there was the greddy section and the DIY section.

it has evolved into the diy and prefabbed section.

How about I change it to a "Starter" kit? :)

A DIY turbo kit might be something that you've built with intentions of putting it into production for sale. So maybe DIY turbo setups would be more appropriate.

I like DIY starter kit. Makes more sense.

but I refer my setup as a DIY "kit" or "setup" it was originally built completely from scratch and now it's a Frankenstein of shelved parts and fabricated pipes...

I consider mine a DIY turbo kit. Some prefabbed components, some DIY fabbed components and piecemeal other purchased parts, both new and used. I think you have to fab parts to make it DIY, and I mean more than a new bracket for your radiator. Manifold, downpipe, charge pipes-something major. IMO, if you didn't have to weld it, it's not DIY. Putting together an ebay universal charge pipe kit tinker-toy style with just cut tubes and couplers is ALMOST DIY. Otherwise, it's just an owner accumulated kit.

I don't know what else you would call it. DIY pile o' parts?

Please don't. I think it's pretty damn cool that this site has a sub-forum for DIY turbo discussion. I for one appreciate this separation.

well when you sell the "starter" kit wouldn't you call it a diy turbo kit. it is everything that you may need to put a turbo on a car. It may not be massed produced but it still is a kit none the less.

well maybe I can contribute to the DIY section. Seeing as I don't have the bank roll to drop on a kit alot of it is going to be flea bay, and wrecking yards.

I am currently doing research on a flea bay cast iron manifold. And I have friends that work in wrecking yards. I will most likely buy my own flanges and build my own down pipe.

So will this qualify me for DIY?

I also have a friend with a sheet metal roller, so I will make all my intercooler plumbing :D

pre heating the oven bothers me actually........how do you pre heat something? it would be warming up right? you don't de-heat the oven. you let if cool off....idk that always bothered me lol

From what I understand about Greddy kits, I think it makes you pretty normal.:)

When someone ask me what king of manifold I'm running, it's tough. I say it's an FM manifold, but then I have to say all the shit I did to it to make it work. To me it's my manifold because there are none other like it. Far as I'm concerned I have a DIY turbo setup.

I made a majority of my "kit" from scratch, does that count as a "diy kit"?:)

I would have to say that mine is a "DIY Setup" also. Not too many miata guys doing what I am doing.

BTW, The AC/DC Tig welder was probably the best (garage) purchase that I have made in a while.
