This thought stemmed from the Forza 4 thread, but I figured I'd start another thread rather than asking there.
Are most of you guys using a wheel for racing games? I've thought several times about getting a wheel, but after pricing them, I just stick with the controller. Does anyone have suggestions for an inexpensive wheel that will be better than using a controller? Or is this one of those things you just have to go all out on to make it worthwhile?
I'd also like to get one with a clutch, if possible, as I know Forza 3/4 gives you that option. Is it reasonably realistic to drive with a clutch or better to just stick with the 2 pedals?

I do it with a stranded controller, but all the cool kids have racing wheels. I think the controller can be a bit touchy, but the last racing wheel I had sucked worse, however that was a long time ago.

Hmm, just hit up craigslist and found a couple cheap used wheels. Maybe I'll give that a shot.

I have the white Xbox wheel that was $50 at Movie Trading Company. It's worth $50, I'm not spending $300 on a good wheel when I can spend that much cash and go racing a real car.
Is it worth it? I always figured anything I could afford wasn't worth it, like that microsoft wheel. Plus I don't have anywhere to mount it. Are you just using your lap?
I don't mind using the controller until I have to try 4 wide through a corner. There's just no room for mistakes.

Its indeed worth it if you can find a good deal on one. If you find a MS xbox wheel for a good price, 50 or under I would recommend it over a controller easily.
For a fanatic setup at retail pricing you are looking at couple hundred.
Clubsport pedals = 200$
or
reg pedals which I think are around 40 or so
fanatec wheel = 250~$
Shifters = 30$
the good thing for the fanatec wheels like the one in my picture is you can use it with the 360, PC, PS3. has belt driven force feedback so its quiet. Mutiple onboard config settings. Easily switch between different setups for different games.
Clubsbport pedals are adjustable and can be tuned to varying amounts of resistance. Brake pedal has a load cell and has force feedback.
I would suggest waiting because I remember seeing a video of fanatec bringing out new wheels, so old ones out there may sell for cheap, or possibly they will have a new package deal for 300 or so.
Google around for the bearing mod for the microsoft wheel. I did that for mine and the results were worth it.
I had the basic force feedback Microsoft wheel before my Fanatec and it was WAY BETTER than the controller.
Fanatec has new wheels out for F4. The CSR and CSR elite. They look awesome. The Elite uses 2 motors for the FFB! ZOMG

I wish there were better wheel/pedal setups for Forza that didn't start at $700+. Fanatec setup is really nice, but after all is said and done with a chair you are talking pretty much $1k+. I got lucky and found a used Playseats/G27 setup for GT5 on local CL.
Also there is a $90 adapter for the G27 to work with xbox, but it doesn't support everything and pretty sure the FF is not the same.
