Yea or nay on this Datsun 510

I don't really NEED another car but I am considering buying this 510. Always had weak spot for 510s and BMW 2002.
Any other dime lovers out there?

that's so pretty.

kaisersoze 04-09-2012 10:30 PM

I know. Very clean not riced out.
I would probably prefer an NA FJ20 for high revs but the VG motors are tough, cheap and plentiful.
Purists won't like the Work 03 knock off wheels(at 2K for a set I will pass myself) and the diff and tranny probably aren't up for hard core drag racing but she sure is purty.
Now, how to explain this to the wife??

thirdgen 04-09-2012 10:39 PM

Buy it.

I'd take the chrome bumpers off, or black them out. Other than personal preferance that makes my pants tight.

I think you technically need them for the car to be road legal, that being said I'd powder coat them black.

but yeah just coating it black would work...and the wheels....and the car....maybe murdered out? It's sexy as is tho. Always loved 510s

petrolmed 04-10-2012 01:17 AM

It is so cleanly done. If you can, buy!

Now that you've had a bunch of people tell you to do what you already wanted to do, are you going to do it?

Just tell your wife that you were eloquently persuaded to get it. Then give her a ride after the fact and she will understand.

It's on my list of "cars to acquire and swap" but I personally wouldn't drop $20K on it. But, that's me. I'd have to do the swap myself.

It's a nice car, tho.

rleete 04-10-2012 09:13 AM

Agreed. It's nice, but 20 grand nice? I think not. Lots of cars can be had for a lot less.

chpmnsws6 04-10-2012 09:30 AM

I'd trade my car for it.

How retarded would it be to take my daily drivetrain and swap it into a 510, including the harness, and run eMS2 on it? lol

I've done (OK, in the process of doing) something more retarded, FWIW. I'd say go for it.

Do it. You won't do it.

real chrome on real retro cars is okay.

"chromed" plastic on modern cars is retarded as what.

<--- Is in the process of removing every stitch of chrome from the SAABata including decorative chrome and both bumpers. Bumpers are completely overrated. And heavy. And they have no place on a track car.

And I'm not a child, regardless of what my wife says.

can somebody educate me on why somebody would go to all that work for a vg30e? its probably the closest thing nissan has to a LSx (the iron block version) i guess but i don't get it.

it is a nice car and i'm a fan of both 510s and 2002s.

you saying I'm biased because my dad owned a metal plating shop and chromed just about every piece of metal we had lying around??

He recently just offered me the chrome and brass nuts-n-bolts chess set.

also my first two bicycles were chrome. not sure what brand they were. dad just stripped em and dipped em.

Braineack 04-10-2012 02:57 PM

can he re-chrome the plastic trim on my altima?

Vg30e is cheap, actually lighter than the aluminum block vg motors and comparable to other 4 cylinder swaps. True they are not high revving without a lot of work but 7K is easily do able. The pistons and rods are good for 400+hp stock and you can swap in the forged rods from the DETT motor for cheap with some easy mods, pistons from a VK45 too maybe don't remember. The block is tough and they are made for big boost hell they have 13 head bolts per head. Nissan was making like 1100-1500hp on turbo versions for IMSA racing on modified vg motors.

You guys are looking at this all wrong. The blue car is a (structural) rust free Texas survivor/ old lady barn car with legit patina and a bad ass drivetrain that makes beautiful noises and will last forever. Looks like granny's daily driver, and sounds like a sport bike. It has all killer electronics and suspension. Everthing (except the bladder-less fuel cell, I guess) is done correctly, and with nice parts. This is old car gold. Plus he's asking half the price that the red car is going for.

BTW, the harnesses are bolted to the factory rear seat belt mounts. That's the safest place to put them on a 4 door 510 without a roll bar, as the b-pillars are too far forward to run a normal harness bar. They do the same thing with Mk1 and Mk2 Jettas/ Golfs.

somewhere someone probably makes a "blackout" kit for that. it's likely strips of vinyl you just cover over it with.

also those are probably vacuum metalized if they're plastic.

Don't get me wrong I really liked this car when I saw it listed somewhere else.
an SR20VE would be my second choice after an FJ20(just too much of a pain to get parts here in the US). I would love to get some N1 cams or Kelfords and really make it sing. Even as it is it probably runs 13s or so it isn't slow. The suspension stuff is ok the Tech coilovers are just repackaged AGXs though aren't they.
The patina is cool and appeals to purists but cost is the ultimate arbiter.
You think he'd sell for 10K? seems like I remember he was asking like 15K and said not to bother him for less.

+1 i was trying to be polite cause ive been kind of an ass recently, but i have to say i agree. after discovering that my track car is a "rust free colorado" car im pretty sure the only people who would say that are from MN. lesser products have better marketing for a reason....

He started at $10,5 here:

If you google "Datsun 510 SR20VE" you'll see that he's had half a dozen different prices over the last couple of years.

I would L.O.V.E. to own this car, but I simply can't swing that kind of money right now unless I sell my daily, and I think I'd get really tired of driving this thing every day in ~January of next year when I'm commuting in a car with a big hole in the trunk floor, lol.

I think the FT86/ BRZ, the NC and the Hyundai Genesis are as close as we're going to get to small/ cool/ simple awesomeness again.

There might be hope in kit cars, though? A local guy is building Factory 5 kits now for cheap enough that he can sell them and make reasonable money on them. It has to be possible to build a Cobra Daytona Coupe kit for new Genesis money... Or something along the lines of GolfTDIBrad's Mevv?

Here's one for sale in the area. This car was listed about 6 weeks ago, by the same guy who built that Miata/Datsun truck some years ago, for $3500 IIRC. Now the new seller wants $6500 lol.

Looks like an opportunity for a serious lowball offer.

sadly i am posting my datsun for sale. its a 68 datsun 510 rat rod. very mechnicaly sound the owner before me did very good work and i have continued with the build. it originaly came with a l16 (1.6l) and now has a l18 (1.8l) out of a truck that was rebuilt recently. it also came 4 speed and now has a 5 speed out of the same truck. she dose good on the freeway cruising at 80 isnt a issue. the brakes have all been gone thru and all are in excelent shape. the front has drilled and slotted rotors and everything is new in the rear. in the back it has cut springs to lower it, new shocks tokicko i believe, and camber/toe adjusters. up front it has 280zx tokicko struts with h&r coilovers and after market stronger tension rods. i also have a pair of adjustable lower control arms with new ball joints just need the steering knuckles from a newer 510 to work with the bigger better ball joints. it also has bump steer adjusters under the struts to almost eliminate all bump steer. its an older car but really drives nice and handles amazing! inside its fairley bare but has newer carpet, miata passenger seat (have the drivers seat i can include as well) and a fixed back sparco drivers seat with 5 point harness. welded in 4 point roll bar, rare white door panels and rear seat. the rear seat isnt that great but its a race car!! its also has autometer oil pressure and water temp guages and aftermarket tach, grant steering wheel. the list of quality stuff on this car goes on and on. like i said it is very mechnicaly sound! the body isnt perfect but very solid and looks very rat rod! all the floor boards are solid as well as trunk and spare tire well. can include 8 extra tires i have for it as well as a l16 from a 68 510 thats a builder.

i really dont want to sell this car. i bought the 5 year plates and had every intention to reissue them after the 5 years but situations changed and my fiancae hates it so in order to keep the peace i decided on a price i would be able to live with letting it go for and am going to be pretty solid on that. i will need something else enjoyable to drive tho so would be interested in a partial or full trade. i just want something fun as well! cummins, duramax, powerstroke,2500hd, anything hemi, jeep cherokee, wrangler, acura type s, 2.5rs, wrx, s4, some things i wouldnt be interested in are srt4 neon, GRAND cherokee unless its hemi, most gas fords.
i am looking for 4 door ad fun for me and her and possibly kiddos!
call or txt me anytime and leave a message 303-815-7449

Stein 04-17-2012 11:29 PM

I need an set of minilites to make the SAABata more period correct but I doubt I'll drop the coin. It's going to be a track rat so 6UL or 15x8 wideopens for cheap will leave moar money for tires.

Yes, but no 15x8.

I could go Rota RB in a 15 x 8 for $499. They are 4 x 100 with a 35mm offset so similar to 6UL fitment.

vehicular 04-19-2012 11:31 AM

RBs look all goofy in normal offsets. You have to go with really low offsets for them to look any sort of right. If you hunt around you'll turn up a set of Panasports, Watanabes, Longchamps, etc fr reasonable money. Hell I sold that set of Panasport FS15Es I had for sale a few weeks ago for within spitting distance on what you would pay for a set of new Rotas.
