Finally did it... pulled the trigger on the Nikon P-223 3x32. A buddy of mine had one a few weeks ago that I shot with and it did everything I wanted.

I applied for the Leupold Military discount program and almost went with their VX1 1-4x20, but it was going to be about $300 with the mount I wanted.

I paid $135 shipped for the Nikon after free shipping and 10% off OpticsPlanet April-Fools Promo. Plus Nikon is having a "free-mount" promo for their P-series scopes, so I'll get one of those sent in a few weeks.

I think my AR is now done.

I found the link for the free mount promo on the Nikon site, but the only "authorized dealer" listed is on Amazon. Are you sure OpticsPlanet will work for the free mount?

Actually, you may be right. I can't find anywhere on the Optics Planet site where they're participating in the promo. If my scope doesn't show up with one, I'll be pissed, but it'll be the impetus to get something quick-release instead.

Have been researching a budget bolt-action rifle for a few months now and think I'm ready.

I've got about 8 deer seasons under my belt, and have exclusively used other people's very expensive stuff. My go-to gun has been a friends mid-60's Sako 25-06 that I've taken about 2 dozen with, including my longest shot at around 380yds with that gun. Not near the limits of the caliber, but the gun is fit with an equally old 3-9x40 Redfield scope. This gun is the definition of tack-driver and has spoiled me forever.

Next to that gun, I've had access to $5k dollar full-custom rigs wearing NightForce and shooting precision handloads. My buddy shoots a 5" group at 1000yds with one of his guns that I can barely put my group on the 24" plate.

Anyways... time for me to have my own gun. This gun will not be babied. It will be a working gun, will be shot often and need to survive a "ranch" type of life.

The sweet-spot for this gun will be in the 200-300yd range, and be used with mainstream ammo (Remington CoreLokt or Federal PowerShock). .308 is now a given although I did consider .30-06 and .270.

The Ruger American has seen some great praise lately and I'd been leaning towards that for a long time. However, Savage enjoys a reputation for having industry leading "accuracy-out-of-the-box", and I think I'm going to get a Savage 11 Trophy XP in .308. It comes with a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 that I was going to buy anyways... all for $500. Reviews all say it shoots well under minute-of-deer and is capable of 1-1.5 MOA at intermediate distances with match ammo.

Agree completely with your decision. Savage was always competitive in construction and accuracy, and the AccuTrigger finally put them in the top tier.

My only other recommendations at that price point would be a Tikka T3 (but you wouldn't be getting a good scope with it).

Years ago I was debating between a savage 10fp and an m700, both in .308. Kept hearing that out of the box the savage was more accurate but the m700 had better aftermarket support. I got the m700 pss. After about 40rounds through it and breaking it in properly it could shoot 1/8 moa at 100yds...oh and that was 5 rounds, not the usual 3.

You need to clarify this.

A .308 bullet is 7.8mm in diameter. In order to claim 1/8 MOA, you would need to place each round within 3mm's of eachother at 100yds, creating a single hole only slightly larger than the diameter of a single bullet. To be honest, because the bullet usually makes a hole slightly larger than the actual diameter anyways, you would literally need each round to go through the exact same hole, which is impossible.

I'd say that the minimum distance you would have to shoot a .308 to even be able to measure 1/8 moa is 200yds. In that case, you would still need to make just one hole, and it would be smaller than nickel, which is impossible.

A stock Remmy 700 (even the police sniper version) is usually slightly better than 1moa from a bipod on top-shelf factory ammo with a good shooter. From a fixed rest and perfect handloads, you can probably get a stock gun down to 1/4moa (which means each hole is better-than-touching) or maybe a bit better. To get better, you're gonna need a lot of custom work and you certainly wouldn't be measuring it at 100yds.

Sam. I have a Savage 11 in .223 and really like it, but like you am ready for my own .308 for deer.

My research has led me to the Savage 16 Weather Warior in .308. It is a synthetic stock, stainless barrel, which to me is the perfect "ranch" setup. It not only has the acutrigger, but also the new accustock, which has an aluminum pillar block that is molded into the stock. It's supposed to be the cats meow. It's a bit more expensive than the 11, but I want it.

Not sure if you have seen it yet, just wanted to show you incase you missed it.

Might also take a look at Marlin's X7 series. I bought the short action (XS-7) in .308 Win a few months ago, gave $340 for it with the scope rail. I'm shooting one M.O.A. at 100 yards using whatever factory ammo I can find in the 155-168 gr range, easily. I cut that in half using hand loaded 155 Sierra BTHP Match. I think I can keep it at 1 M.O.A or less at 200 yds, but don't have a place to shoot that far, I'm shooting now at a police range open to the public on Saturdays. Trigger is similar to the Savage you mention, and can be adjusted to a hair pull. It's not as finely made as, say a Rem.700, but it's well worth the asking price. I put a Chinese clone of a Bushnell scope on mine, lighted reticle with M.O.A crosshair, 6x24, 60 mm objective, for 1/2 the price the name-brand scope was. With a bipod and good sling, I have about $550 in a rifle I can hit anything with I need to.

For the range you're shooting, don't discount the 7mm-08. It's an accurate round, the BC is actually better than .308 for similar loads. Lots of ammo around, it doesn't seem to fly off the shelves like .308, .270 and ought-6 does. If you don't mind a bit more punch in the arm, a .300 WSM is also nice. I used to have a .300 Win-Mag that I shot 500 yd benchrest (back when my eyes were worth a damn), but after 5-6 rounds, I was done, and had a black-and-blue shoulder for a week.

I want a Rem 700 in 300WM for a custom build if I can find an action fro a great price. Otherwise I've got a .300WM Mauser action (Rem 798) that I'm aquiring parts for a build. The commercial version of the Mauser will be a little cheaper than starting with the military version. Mark Skaggs is a big Mauser guy and has built some F class mauser riflles. I'm going to send the action and new barrel to him. I'll bed the action myself.


Those of you that want a fantastic hunting rifle in .308 should look at the FNAR light contour. I hunt with one regularly. It is amazing. It's not pretty, but you can put them in the same hole at 100yds with hand loads.

Love it! Went with some UTG quick-release rings. The focus dial actually touches the release lever for the rear BUIS, but there's no pressure on it... will see how she fares.
