You've gotta base everything around Walmart prices.
WWB (Winchester White Box) 9mm 115gr FMJ 100rd: $24
FCR (Federal Champion Redbox) 9mm 115gr FMJ 100rd: $20

That's .20-.24 cents per rd depending on what your local place stocked. Reloads from Freedom or Ventura could occasionally be had for less, but by all standards, the cheapest 9mm brass you can buy is the Federal from Wallyworld. These are still their prices... ie, Walmart hasn't raised their prices at all... you just have to be there at 8am the morning they get a shipment in.

Oh ok. No ammo at Walmart here in nj. My cousin in pa said he would pick me up some next time he goes. Good to know it will be a proper price.

The internets say 124 grain 9mm tends to feed better for my 9. Is that more rare or $?

It will be a pinch more, but I'll assume "the internet" is talking about SD ammo, and not range/plinking ammo, which is going to be MUCH more expensive than Walmart bulk FMJ. You will certainly want to put a few mags of whatever hollow-point self-defense ammo you're planning on using through any firearm to make sure that particular gun will reliably feed that particular ammo. Some guys say a minimum of 500rds is sufficient to determine "reliability"... which is why I carry a Glock... which are famous for feeding everything. 1911's can be pretty picky about what they like however.

124gr is a very popular SD weight for 9mm... Speer Gold Dot or Federal Hydra-Shock are pretty standard, at $1+ per round. But for just heading to the range and making some noise, get the cheap bulk stuff, or even cheaper steel-case Russian (Tula/Wolf) if you don't reload.

They're outofstock now, but yesterday I bought 2 of these:
Blemished PSA Safe/Fire Lower and Classic Lower Parts Kit
At $99 I just couldn't pass it up... Even if I bought the standard PSA stock kit, that's still under $340 shipped for 2 complete lowers, and my FFL will do 2 transfers for $25.

Still convinced I want 16" pencil uppers... Will see what kind of Labor Day sales pop up.

First "big" bolt-gun almost ready for purchase... Remington 700 Tactical 20" .308... just searching for best price, hoping $600 delivered. Scope will be an SWFA 12x42, looking for a budget base/rings/bipod. I still suck at shooting, but this gun will allow me to upgrade as I get more trigger time. Next year will be a stock and some basic smith'ing, year after probably a trigger.

A buddy of mine just bought a complete reloading setup, so I'll have that going for me as well.

I'm pretty much going to build this exactly for my yearly November hunting trip:

Also very shortly going to have my S&W MP15 Optics Ready for sale for anybody in VA who is interested.

^BOOOOOM!!!!!!!!!!

Bought it... Remington is even having a Fall sale for $40 off any 700 SPS that I didn't know about. Since I'm not going to be set up for reloading before deer season, I've gotta start searching for .308... need enough cheap stuff to play with, and enough quality stuff to get really dialed in for distance.

I never understood the appeal of a .223 bolt gun. It's inferior to many other calibers in the class... .22-250 comes to mind as being superior in every way.

Sure. .223 is cheap and plentiful, and having tons of mags is cool... but you're not gonna hook up a 30rd mag for a coyote hunt, nor are you gonna hit the field with Tula steel-case.

Plus, you can get a Savage 11 XP in .22-250 with a Nikon Prostaff for under $500: Savage 11 TH XP 22-250 NIKON $482.00 SHIPS FREE

Unless that gun you're looking at has an aftermarket stock, trigger, match barrel, or something that makes it a fantastic score, I'd buy a cheaper gun, work up some hand-loads, and go from there.

it is custom, but I dont remember everything to T...

It is a very nice gun but thats exactly what I am trying to figure out; its super nice, but very hard to think about when there is the .308 next to it for the same price but not all the custom...

...I saw the gun as the next "plinker" since .223 is more abundant that .22 these days.

My Savage is a .223, cost and availability of ammunition was one of the top considerations...this was before the Newtown National Assault Rifle Sales and Marketing Campaign for Christmas last year. Fortunately, 70 grain BTHP has been pretty readily available at pre-liquidation pricing all along. I can't justify the 30-50% price increase for 22-250 for marginally better performance within common shooting ranges. If I was going to pick something other than the .223, it would have been a .308. 22-250 was a distant 3rd for me.

I did just pick up a VX-3 for my Savage though. With the specs of the 12 FCV, I expect to drive tacks all day long with this thing.

It continues to get better:
http://www.karrisguns.com/ar-15-lowe...-manufacturing

Karri's is legit, and Anderson is well known... That's the cheapest lower receiver I've seen in about a year. On the other hand, there's $10 shipping and at $20 (or more) to your FFL... so it's $100 any way you look at it.

On the other hand, PSA has been having almost weekly sales on it's "blemished lower plus classic LPK" for $100... call it $130 in your hands. Makes buying a stripped lower kinda crazy when an LPK is $30 more.

They've also been having Magpul MOE complete blemished lowers for $199 lately... pretty ******* great. I'm expecting for Labor Day that they'll have at least a couple complete uppers w/BCG's for under $400.

I'm standing by for Labor Day sales to start and will post up the better ones that I find.

Sam, it looks like your 308 is the SPS. Isn't that a heavy barrel? I thought SPS heavy barrel type guns lived on ranges, shooting absurd distances. Do many guys hunt with them? I'm kinda in the market for a decent 308 for hunting and haven't considered these guns.

Also, I have a Savage 11 bolt action in 223. It's a decent gun, but I hardly ever use it. I'm thinking of selling it to fund a super nice upper for my AR.

One last thing, looking for last min opinions on my next 9mm. It will be a EDC gun, I'm thinking either a Glock 26 or XDm compact. I'm leaning a bit toward the XD, it should feel a lot like my 1911. I like the idea of the slightly longer 3.8 barrel with the shorter butt. With both I can put a larger mag with an extension to get it close to a G19 size. This is all theory based on Internet reading, as I don't know anyone with these guns. My wife will use this gun from time to time, but she loves the 1911 and calls it "hers" and gets mad when I take if from home. Opinions?

You're correct about the SPS and its intent. I'll be using it on whitetail in the 500-700 yard range. This year is just to get it out there... I've got a Weaver base/rings and a Harris bipod. It'll wear a SWFA 12x42 and I'll shoot Federal Gold or whatever "match" ammo is on sale at my LGS. Next year it'll get a stock and some basic smith'ing. Goal is for repeated hits on a 12x24" plate at 1000yds... totally doable for that gun providing I'm not a complete hack. But for now, I'll be happy with minute-of-deer at 500 on factory match ammo, which shouldn't be a problem.

Your Savage 11 is a great gun, and plenty of options for upgrading, but not a good caliber for deer. Plenty of places sell the 11XP package with a Nikon Prostaff in all the medium-large calibers for $500'ish... and you're just a bedding/trigger-job away from 1 MOA out to the distance of your ammo and skill.

If you're going to get a large-caliber AR upper for hunting, DON'T SKIMP!!! 6.8SPC or 6.5Grendel is great for deer, but put your money into a receiver and barrel... I think DPMS sells a slick-side heavy stripped upper for like $90 and you shouldn't spend less than $250 on a barrel. Skip the accessories... get a free-floated smooth tube hand-guard and low-pro gas-block... check out SOTAARMS... they sell a cheap version of what you want.

For carry, the "size" of the gun is all in the grip. Longer barrels just hang down your thigh more and don't really add any size. If you're not built like Miley Cyrus, you'd be surprised how easy it is to EDC a G19. IMHO, people put way too much thought into "printing". Just about any ******* out there could EDC a Desert Eagle for his entire life and never have anybody give it a second look... printing is vastly overrated.

Look on Armslist and pick yourself up a used G19 and give it a shot... you can always turn around and sell it for same amount a month or two later and be out nothing. I highly recommend a laser and night-sights for your EDC whatever you get.

For the wife, I always say "get a Kahr", but since she likes a 1911, don't know what's next... perhaps a used S&W 5906?

Also... just got my first set of LABOR DAY SALE emails... will post some good stuff up when I get out of the simulator.

I had given up on trying to find ammo for a couple of months there. Was at walmart yesterday and thought surely they are caught up because I need some more 9mm... NOPE WRONG AGAIN. The shelves looked emptier than they did in Feb.

You need to talk to the Walmart manager. It's being discussed in several forums I frequent that Walmarts are back to pretty much 100% shipments. Now that guys can't get $300 for a 555bulkpack of .22lr, the LGS's aren't screaming for ammo from brokers like they were a few months ago, which has allowed the larger retailers (Walmart/Academy) to get back up to full strength. It's also no longer as profitable for resellers to wait in line at Walmart in the morning to buy their 3box limit and turn around immediately and put it on Armslist for 5x more.

Stuff isn't staying on the shelves as long as it was this time last year, but it should be coming in pretty regularly. If your Walmart is getting nothing, there's a reason... probably the store manager.

However, Walmarts around the country run pretty much the same... shipments come in during the night and trucks are unloaded. Ammo goes into a locked cage in back in shipping and is brought out at 8am when Sporting Goods turns over shift. Most stores get 2 shipments of ammo a week... mine are Tues/Sat like clockwork... be there Wed/Sun morning at 0800 and you can have your pick. Be friendly, talk to a manager, find out what the deal is... he should be happy to talk to you.

So if you're at Walmart 2 days after a shipment comes in, the shelves proabably ARE EMPTY... gotta find out the schedule and be there in the morning.

I'm a gun novice, but learning. I have a Browning .380 pistol that I inherited from my father-in-law. I'm wondering if it was his Navy service weapon??

Bought my brother a Taurus Raging Judge Magnum, per his request. In the movies and especially the old westerns, they often throw their revolver at their opponent when they run out of ammo. This is the first gun that I've seen that could do real damage if it connected. Hyde points out that the thrower might suffer rotator cuff damage... The scale can't be imagined from pics of the gun alone, but the pic in this link does a nice job: Google Image Result for http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/raging_judge_magnum-tfb.jpg
