The Mosin to this date, has been my favorite gun purchase. I definitely recommend everyone go buy one STAT! I got mine for $89 6 years ago... the price just keeps rising. Anything under $150-$175 right now is a good deal

the mosin is by far my most favorite rifle I have ever owned, next to my very first purchase when I turned 18, which was my Savage MkII .22lr.

I will own more, for I have mosinitus (not as severe as robert)

Got mine in a trade plus cash for my GSG-522, which was the best damn trade in my life.



I know in CA you cant get ammo direct to your door but i have no idea which direction surplus tins are at these days since im still firing out of my 440 Ukrainian round tin i bought for a 100 bucks months ago...

Also, AIM still has 880 round lots of 7.62x54R in spam cans for like $200+$20 shipping or somesuch. I'm sure Robert will laugh at that price, but I haven't actually looked. I just happened to have the AIM page open when I typed that.

Took the Mosin (Obrez) and the M92 pistol to the range this morning. Shot a bit of video (sun was right in the camera):




I couldn't hit a damn thing with the Obrez last week when I went but today it was right on. It shoots about 4" high but if I aimed low I could hit the cardboard tubes (think about twice as wide as a toilet paper tube - same height) at 100 yards without much problem. Not bad for a custom rifle that I just threw together. The shots I take in the video were not representative of the day. I'm thinking that there was a burr in the muzzle where I cut the barrel off but it must have worn off or something as we were shooting. Put about 60 rounds down range and will be paying for it tomorrow (and the next day...).

In other news - Jebus, I need to lose some weight!!!

When you cut the barrel down did you crown the muzzle?
A good way to do it (on a cheap rifle) is use a brass wood screw and some lapping compound.

I carried a Taurus M85 .38spl for a few months just for kicks. I decided I wanted a medium-frame semi-auto and have stuck with the G19 ever since. I have decided to "step up" to .40cal however, so when I get home from deployment, I'm trading my G19 in on a G23. I still want a full-size 9mm for HD, so am looking at the M&P9 for that.

Also just bought the next part for my AR10 build... AeroPrecision .308 upper receiver.

Nice! Might as well get a 357 sig barrel just cause. Wolf makes a 9mm conversion barrel as well, if you want 1 gun for all.

Do any of you have experience with the Burris fastfire or other similar reflex type sights? I'm looking for a non magnified optic for my sub 2000 and am debating that style of sight vs the more typical aimpoint style red dot (probably a vortex SPARC or Primary Arms something). Thanks.

Microdots take a lot of getting used to. They are very small, and you need to be very consistent in your presentation to pick up the dot. Good tube-type reddots (I would include the sparc in this category) are much more forgiving and are easy to pick up in unconventional positions. They also tend to be much brighter.
It doesn't make sense to spend a ton on an optic for a sub2000. The sparc (original) is a great optic for the money. It's tough and super easy to use with a little training.
I hear good things about the Primary arms reddot as well, but I don't have any experience with it. It's basically an aim point knockoff without the battery life and gravity-like reliability.
I don't think you'll be disappointed with a sparc. Also in its price range is the lucid m7 which has a 25 moa circle around the dot. I like the button placement on the sparc better, but they are both good for the money.

Yea, I have a SPARC on one of my ARs, and a Bushnell TRS-25 on a HK93 clone that have both been trouble-free. I like the SPARC but was thinking about trying something different. Primary Arms has a new "Advanced Series Red Dot" that boasts a 2 MOA dot and a 50k hour run time. I might try one of those.

The price on the fancy MkIII's are freaking ridiculous. Srsly, for a gun that's been around for 40yrs, you'd think they'd have made their money back on the tooling... and considering everybody I know with one has half the Volquartsen catalog invested. But still, I've always wanted one with the bull barrel... the 5.5" standard model is very classic... you can pick those up for $250 shipped lots of places. But, I'm going to inherit a MkII standard some day and just can't come around to buying one for myself when almost everybody out there sells an actual 1911-22 for the same price.

2) S&W M&P 9mm
3) Remington 870

This is what my department uses and I feel like I could knock a cigarette out of someones mouth at 25 yards even in stressful situations, recommend me something to keep in the car that won't break the bank.

You're right Sam, prices got out of hand for a while. Fortunately my good buddy owns gun store and sells to me wholesale. I love mine. It's more accurate than me, and with a decent red dot it's great for getting little critters out of trees.
