I keep getting emails from GrabAGun.com advertising a Colt 1991 for $599 after $100 Colt rebate. It seems like a good deal but I don't know if I want a 1991 vs a 1911. I am by no means an expert on these pistols but I was just wondering what you guys thought about it. Bud's has these for $731 (I'm assuming $100 rebate would bring it down to $631). Beating Bud's by $30 seems like it is a good deal. The Colt name and the low price probably means I could get rid of it at some time with very little depreciation. Not sure how much the 1991 vs 1911 would cost me on a resale. I mentioned the $400 Tisas earlier and I dig the idea of taking a bargain pistol and polishing it a bit and making it a good shooter. I've put the 1991 in my shopping cart four times in the past week but I keep removing it. Most of you know I am a cheap *** and this would be the most expensive pistol I've ever purchased. I doubt I will shoot it much but it would be nice to carry it to the range along with my S&W M1917 revolver. Comments???

I'm pretty sure this is the best gun parts deal I've ever seen.
These are DPMS .308 AR barrels. They are in contours that I can't seem to find anywhere else on the net, so I think that Numrich bought up the stock from somewhere that couldn't offload them, or may have bought them directly from DPMS when they changed their minds halfway through a production run. Numrich is like SAARCO... specialize in new-old-stock of military guns but also random buy-outs and liquidation type deals.

I bought the 20" Heavy Classic for $130 shipped. Brownells sells the exact same in a 20" mid-weight for $279. They've got a few more models of 20" and 16", and a no-**** 24" lite-weight for $119.

If you were EVER IN YOUR LIFE considering building an AR10, you can't pass this up. DPMS barrels have an excellent reputation, and the price is just unreal.

Colts are a little expensive for the features that they come with, but my experience with them has been nothing but good.

One thing I do not like about the 1991, is the series 80 firing pin block. In my opinion, it is a solution to a question no one asked, and needlessly complicated the trigger mechanism.

That said, the firing pin block generally works, and you don't hear many complaints of it falling out of time. If your gunsmith says he can't do a trigger job because of it, you need to find another gunsmith.

Personally, I would spring for the $700 colt over the 400 dollar import, but I am admittedly a bit of a 1911 purist/snob, so YMMV

Another twist in the 1911 saga. I found a 5" Remington 1911R1 for $499 - $75 rebate. Brand name pistol at a Tisas price. I have not researched the Remington yet.

I'm assuming it's just the regular R1 and not the enhanced? The Remingtons are fine, but your colt will hold its value. It probably has a very slight edge in quality as well.
Now if you could get the enhanced model of the Remington for the same price as the colt, that would be a different story.

also, colt might be bankrupt in a few years, so its value might get higher if there is a "regime" change there and drastic changes are made to its processes.

I'm in the mood to buy another gun. I'm thinking Ruger Mini 30. What should I pay?

No more than 750-800 out the door. Just curious, why a mini 30 instead of an AK or SKS?

A mini 30 is 10 times the gun an SKS is. SKS is Chinese for "lousy machining, barely fits".

I don't disagree with that. I never understood the appeal of an SKS other than the possibility of finding one for under $300.
That being said, I also don't think the mini-30 offers 500 more dollars worth of operability, accuracy or reliability, and I love Ruger firearms.

Mini 30, cause I used to own a mini 14. I traded it and a few hundred back in 2000 for a DPMS AR. I want a 30 just cause of 7.62x39. I have 2 rifles in .223 right now, and none in 7.62x39. I also have a decent collection of Ruger rifles, this will be a nice addition.

Word. Ain't nothing wrong with acquiring another Ruger firearm. Or Sig...
Speaking of which; I just acquired one of these beauties:

My 1911 bug may not have gone away after all. I think this one's going to be a keeper.

I put the Remington R1 in my shopping cart again today but started having second thoughts. Actually, I spent some time looking at Desert Eagle AE50's today. Does buying one make me cool or a douche? I had a Ruger P89 45ACP a few years ago and it was too big for my hand. I need to fire a .50 to see what it is like before I commit. Seems like it would end the pistol journey real fast so I would never have to look for another handgun. Might be cheaper in the long run just to get one now (assuming pretty much nothing could ever be considered an upgrade - at least as far as power). I don't shoot handguns much so ammo costs long term are not a huge issue.

There's all kinds of revolver rounds that are much more powerful than the .50AE.

I can't imagine buying one just for kicks though.

Every weapon I have ever purchased (except my CCW mouse gun) has just been for kicks.

I am so mixed on the Desert Eagle. I think it's cool for it what it is but I don't really see how it would fit in my life besides being an expensive toy. It's the same reason I can't justify a 50cal rifle. Overkill for anything I can see myself "needing" to shoot (person or animal), too expensive per shot to really enjoy just plinking. Given the opportunity to shoot someone elses I'd be happy to give it a try, but every time I think about buying one I just can't do it.

My point wasn't that you should never buy a gun just for kicks, it was that buying a gun for kicks that costs $1.25 every time you pull the trigger doesn't make sense to me.

I guess it depends on how often you pull the trigger, and if you feel you are getting your monies worth out of it. I have a friend with a Ruger Redhawk in .454 Casull and he feels its worth it to pay $2.50/rnd for factory loads to inflict pain and suffering on people. Different strokes for different folks.

But it does drive me up the wall when people don't understand ammo prices, especially in the last 2~3 years. Everyone wanted to shoot my 1911 but no one understood that at the time, it was $10/mag to keep the thing running.

I might start rolling my own .45 now. There are some pretty decent recipes that use the same powder as my shotgun loads.

I talked to a friend today about the AE50. I explained to him that if I bought a 1911 it would cost $5 per mag but if I got a Desert Eagle it would be $10 per mag. Chances are I will only shoot the thing once every 3-4 months on average and I bet I will only shoot 10%-20% of the rounds through it that I would shoot through the 1911. As far as ammo, I actually think it will be cheaper to shoot the DE. The pistol will cost much more than a bargain 1911. If I did get a bargain 1911 I would bet I will end up getting a nicer one at some time. I normally shoot rifles (22lr and 7.62x54r) the majority of the time anyway. I just can't see myself shooting a pistol that often. When I did shoot a lot it was with my Walther P22 but my eyes are so bad that I don't really have any fun with it. The real fun is listening to it go bang!

Anyway, I see that PSA has the DE for less than $1400. I might check one out in the next couple of weeks. I want to get one in my hand to see how big/heavy it actually is. In the end it is really a waste of $1400 but it will do a good job compensating for my small *****.
