I found a great spot in the everglades. Went there Saturday evening, got a speck of ---- on my head by a passing vulture, killed two of them that day and two other undisclosed animals. The .454 is a beast and super accurate from much farther than I was anticipating. I love it.

Anyone got experience with the Steyr M-A1? I finally saw one today. Very impressive trigger on it...didn't get to fire it, though.

I went to the range yesterday, shot a AR-15 in .22lr and a H&K USP in .40 S&W. The AR had feeding issues, probably because its a range gun and it looks like it hasn't been cleaned in forever, fun gat though. I didn't like trigger pull on the USP at all, way too long.

I own one. I love it. It's an interesting pistol -- designed in-house by a Glock employee as an update/improvement on the Glock. When Glock chose not to use his design, he requested and received permission to sell the design to Steyr-Mannlicher instead.

Pros:

• Super low bore axis (incredibly soft and controllable recoil)
• Trigger is better than Glock/XD in my opinion
• Trigger gets even better with Glide-Rite striker pin bushings
• Fully supported chamber in all chamberings
• Fit/finish better than Glock/XD
• Incredibly accurate (comparable to my HK P7 and SIG P225)
• Completely reliable (as long as you have the updated extractor and mag springs from Steyr)
• Relatively cheap magazines

Cons:

• Grip angle doesn't work for everyone (I hate Glocks, but love this)
• Trigger may not be as good as worked-over Glock/XD trigger
• Had to request updated extractor and mag springs from Steyr for 100% reliability (new pistols should be fine)
• Questionable future support and parts availability (compared to Glock/XD)
• Trapezoidal sights (I like them, and if you don't, can be swapped for traditional sights of your choice)
• Slightly bigger than G19 (with same mag cap)
• Not much choice in holsters (compared to Glock/XD)

I snagged mine from CDNN when they were blowing them out for $350. It's a no brainer at that price (really, at under $400, I'd take it over a beat up Glock or XD). Over $400...you're probably safer with one of the Glock/XD/M&P group for mags, parts availability, and company support.

Once mine was sorted out with the updated extractor and mag springs, however, I put it through its paces and feel 100% confidence in it. I also added a stainless steel guide rod and the Glide-Rite strike pin bushings. It's my nightstand pistol.

Great info, thanks! These are all the pistols I'm considering, so this is a huge help. The M9-A1 the shop had was $519, so probably a little steep compared to the competition.

I've fired one of my friend's XDM-9's with a Powder River Precision trigger. THAT was nice. The Steyr's trigger seemed not to far off.

Then again, I'm pretty much a gun noob. I qual'd on the M9 when I was in the AF, but shooting it once every two years doesn't help much.

The HiPoint is an awesome gun. The latest versions even have a stock that isn't completely butt-ugly. My only problem is they take proprietary 10rd magazine... I think somebody sells an aftermarket 15rd mag though. Whatever moron at HiPoint decided not to use another brands hi-cap mag lost out on a huge demographic.

Look at Keltec... their Sub2000 takes 4 different kinds of mags you can get in 30rd configurations, and they sell for almost double MSRP and are unavailable on shelves, and most FFL's wont take a deposit or order one for you because of how hard they are to get.

The equally as ugly Beretta CX4 used the hi-cap mags from the 92f and is even more expensive than a Keltec... and I can't believe they are any more reliable than the Hi-Point, which has a reliablility reputation that's equal to anything else you can name.

IMHO, the HiPoint is almost the perfect gun. I can even get over how ugly it is. I've fired on once and it was great... but lack of hi-cap mags is a complete and utter deal breaker.

Your other options in a "black-type gun" is the Just Right Carbine, or the MechTech Glock carbine conversion... which after it's kitt'd out, is more than 2 HiPoints.

I'm thinking a 3-9x40 is bit overkill... but a basic 30mm reddot would be perfect for a gun you're not gonna shoot past about 100yds... maybe 150yds... but this one is fairly tacticool.

Thanks, I like the Hi Point because it saves me about $500. Now that I know there is a big-mag out there, I'm even more interested. The single-stack 10-rd mag is retarded. A Hi Point with carbine with a Trijicon sight would be cool and cheap to shoot.

Can I shoot those at any range?

That's what happens when they get popular.

Sub2000 was the same. MSRP is $409.00 and you see ******** @ shows trying to sell them for $599 when they should sell for $290ish.

Hipoint carbine is one of my favorite cheap guns also. What drew me to the 2k is glock magazines are very cheap and very plentiful for 33 rounders, plus I already own a glock handgun.
