Gun show over the weekend..

Was looking for some discrete cases that I could load an AR or two in without it being so obvious what the contents were. Found a couple ACE branded cases with good price points, looked nice and plain, didn't like how the rifles would be secured (or not) inside. Did not buy.

Found a guy selling Savage MKII magazines; $26 each.
Almost bought two until I looked at cheaperthandirt.com as a hunch, found them there for $13 each.

Found a guy selling lowers for $70.00. Bought a couple, already built a rifle out of one, Think I might build a .50 beowulf or something with the remaining.

Also found someone selling a couple different types of .22lr ammo I've been curious about, so I bought several boxes of each and did a little test in my basement.

First we have some .22 Colbri. No gun powder, advertised 375 feet per second:

CCI "Quiet-22" advertised 710fps:

Then of course we've got Federal Value pack advertised 1250fps:

Can't find the power adapter for my sound meter so my videoless youtube audio will have to suffice. Shots are in order I displayed, Colbri, Quiet-22, and Federal value ammo. Camera was about 3 feet in front of the barrel, fired from my Savage MKII-FVSR with 16" barrel.

No time for any actual shooting, was too busy painting my effing house. #FirstWorldProblems

That's my guess.. Given the surface area of a .22 slug's back side I can't imagine it would need to be super powerful.. all I know is a 9mm primer won't spit a 115gr FMJ slug from a 3" barrel.

Did another test in my basement tonight with the same 3 rounds in my Ruger MK-III 22/45:

All three were significantly louder as expected, and neither .22 Colbri or the Quiet-22's cycled the action.

Turn on the light in your basement, it'll make your videos more interesting.

Also, since I've been stuck at home the past week with this head injury, I've "cleared" the house at least 4 times with my new AR.

Cant wait till I get a real house (damn house loan is still on the fence), and not a condo... I wish I could practice clearing my house, but my elevated condo is pretty easy, one way in and one way out.

Been gone for a week, yearly hunt trip to west Texas. Got a doe with a crossbow, passed on a big 8-pt, hit a spike with an LA Precisin in 6.5 Creedmore at 720yds (lots of blood, no deer), and shot a 4" group at 1000yds with a 7mm WSM. Lots of drinking and farting too. Oh yeah, buddy bow'd a turkey and finished it off with some snake-shot from my Glock.

Put 600rds of Academy brand Monarch .223 steel through my M&P15. Had 2 fails to extract and one double-feed in the first mag. All 19 mags that followed were perfect. Ended up with the Primary Arms fixed 3x compact... decent little scope, plenty bright for my uses. The reticle is dot-in-a-donut with 100yd hash marks... which makes it way to busy. Anybody using a fixed 3x at that pricerange just needs a single dot for a battle zero at 100yds. Nobody using that thing is going to be buying ammo that you could attach the word "accurate" to, so why bother with a 600yd mark on the reticle? The rails on it are also a joke and have been removed. It'll work for now.

Also put a ton through my Savage FVSR, (have pics will upload later), including a mag of SuperColibri. I don't know you your reguar Colibris made it out of the barrel, the first shot of Super Colibri got stuck at the tip. The other 9 that I shot hit the dirt at about 30yds. I bet the regular Colibris in my gun wouldn't have cleared the first twist.

I've got a pic of a very acceptable 50yd group I'll upload later.

Oh yeah, those interested in the awesome Savage MKII FV-SR, it's down to $229 at Buds. I'm in the market for a better scope than my current Simmons 22mag (which is awesome for $30) and will report back as well: Savage MKIIFVSR 22LR THREADED BBL $229.00 SHIPS FREE

Just ordered the Palmetto State Armory m4 carbine on sale from their site. After reading a TON of reviews, it seems like its a legitimate mil-spec ar with a chrome lined CHF barrel and all the other goodies one would want.

Will update with pics/info once i get it in.

I didn't take actual video, just recorded the sound. Not really much to see, was just shooting a phone book.

Welcome back Sam, I'm a little jealous. Still haven't picked out a scope for my savage and have only fired it like 6 times total. Not sure about those Colibri's, but 3 of them made it on target from mine.

See also, but currently out of stock: SAVAGE MARK II FV-SR 22 LR THREADED BARREL @ Sportsmans Outdoor Superstore:

That's where I ordered mine from.

I'll start by saying that Winchester Western ammo is absolute utter ****. I actually had the bullet come out of the casing on 2 rounds I picked up. Then I started checking each one as I loaded into the mag. Good thing I bought a 500 pack. OTOH, this guy had this same crap ammo as his 8th most accurate group at 50yds through a $6k Bleiker.
.22LR Rimfire Ammo Comparison Test within AccurateShooter.com

The crosshairs on the scope are also about 1.5 MOA thick, and completely obscure the bullseye on my sticky targets.

I was using a basic front rest only and still managed to group the following picture at 50yds. I'm gonna call that about 1.1" group at 50yds, which is way more than I was expecting.

Next time out, I'm gonna go with a full rest, and splurge on a couple hundred rounds of Eley Match. I'm also not going to the range again with that scope. Don't get me wrong, for $35, it was great if kept to 100yds or preferably 50yds. I have no complaints, but if I don't eliminate the weak material links, I'll never get to the point where the only variable in my groups is me.

Simmons .22mag 4x32
$15 Weaver rings
Winchester Western Bulk 36gr HP's
50yds, no wind, shooting seated from a front rest

Anyone have anything to say about the Heizer Double Tap. If its already been brought up just say so and I'll go back and look for it.

Never seen it or heard of it. If I was legally able to conceal carry the smallest I'd go is the new M&P Shield or Keltec or etc... something single stack 9mm.

Seems like a new version of the old (useless?) derringers.

Took my new (to me) SP01 to the range today, my SA adjustable trigger conversion worked flawlessly. 3.5lb break and great reset, along with Greatly reduced trigger travel. The SS full length guide rod and reduced power spring also functioned 100%. Considering it took some smithing to fix the safety, fit trigger, etc... I'm happy it all worked :P

I really like shooting the SP01...

This should just about sum it up:
http://heizerfirearms.com/pdf/Press%...2010-11-12.pdf

And the solution:
DoubleTap Firearms - Creators of DoubleTap™

The instant I saw this thing, had but one thought... what for? The only possible role this gun could play in any self-defense plan you "planned" to live through is as a second backup (ie, your third gun)... the gun you reach for when your other 2 are empty and the bad guys are coming through the door. It's nice that it's got 2 barrels, just in case you miss your temple with the first shot.

The best effective "3rd gun" ever made is the NAA .22mag. 5 shots of point-blank **** THEM UP that's small enough to wear comfortably in your *** crack. And you could buy 4 of them for the price of a Double-Tap... keep one in each sock, one on a chain around your neck, and one tucked behind your ear.

The Double Tap appeals to me because I'm a small guy and my Kahr is pretty hard for me to conceal. This .45 is small but not at the expense of caliber, just capacity. I'm of the opinion that the first two shots are going to define the outcome of the fight. I definitely would love to carry more but its either have high cap and only sometimes carry or low cap and always carry. It does keep two spare rounds on a speed loader in the handle which is a huge bonus to me. Its the same as having a tiny break-barrel shotgun in your pocket.

It's priced like a full size gun. I'd rather get something with more capacity plus a holster for the MSRP.
