Anyone else can help too.

So I have a Denon AVR-2805 and this week it decided to not make sound anymore. You ever run into this before?

And if it's unfixable what's a good high quality, low price, HDMI switching-capable (maybe that's not low price) AV receiver these days? I like the Denon--or likeD it until it broke.

No--I like the 2805 and sold lots of 'em. Pretty odd for the entire audio section to crap out. I've seen channels dump, but never the whole audio section. I assume you tried all the basics: make sure the speaker outputs are turned on, checked for audio on analog and digital inputs, checked the input mode (just set it to 'auto'), checked stereo and surround, etc

Come to think of it, I don't think I've had a problem with any of the 05 series AVR products, except the very first 3805 I got was a little buggy.

You *might* be at the tail end of your warranty period if you want to get it fixed.

As far as a replacement goes, you'll see that HDMI switching is a pretty common feature these days, anything middle of the road switches. HDMI conversion is pretty common too. The newest standard is 1.3a which is much improved over previous generation equipment.

My new favorite integrated receiver/processor is the Onkyo TX-SR875. It's doesn't just switch/transcode HDMI; it has a full blown video processor on board with a Reon-VX processor. I'm not an Onkyo dealer; negotiating a possible contract with them. Don't see it happening unfortunately. They have some lofty demands.

thanks for the help. hmm. I guess I'll try looking at it in more depth to see if I can figure out exactly what portion is conked out. maybe something in the optical inputs. I pretty much use those exclusively.

what do you make of the 2808 and 3808?

Yamaha has some well priced, good quality receiver. Plus you can find them everywhere these days so discounts are available.

both pretty good machines. I like the 3808CI's assignable amps. Awesome if you have bi-ampable speakers. both will have better video quality than your 2805 due to the faroujda 2310.

both are knockin' on the door of the Onkyo price-wise, which will have substantially better video quality.

my biamp-able speakers would get their own home built amps so that's not useful to me.

what kind of DACs do the denons use? i saw the onk uses the ti/burr browns

the 3808ci sports (2) PCM1791A 192kHz/24bit a/d's per channel
the 2808ci sports some generic 192/24 a/d's

do your amps have balanced ins?

no, no balanced. my amps dont have any inputs yet. using passive speakers at the moment.

problem's getting more annoying. it was intermittent and now it's mostly silent.

do the denons use a speaker output relay that can go bad or something?

wanna PM me a price on the 3808 and SR875 to compare to the hassle of fixing this one? :)

I can't get the 875. Not a dealer. I can TRY though. I can maybe get one though distribution.
I would recommend getting the 875 over the 3808, if that didn't shine through yet. :)

I'll check on getting the 875 on Monday. I have no price lists or other 'confidential' type info as the onkyo rep didn't give me anything.

chances are no onkyo dealer who is legit will make that deal. and chances are I want the 3 year warranty... but you could probably get a store to drop a little off for two if you sweet talked em.

I'll see if I can get 2 tomorrow. Might could get them through distribution, which isn't going to be as discounted as if I could go direct... but like I've said I'm not an Onkyo dealer NEwayz. Probably looking at 25-30% off through distribution... (40-45% off direct probably)

FWIW, JR.com has them for 1299.99 not in stock. another place had silver in and no black for 1399.99 I think.
