Your best working on your car injury

So while I was washing the blood, steel, and coolant out of my fresh wound I was wondering what other have attained while working on their miata's.

Then while I was sitting here squeezing the pus out of the same wound I decided I should make a post to see just what others have done to themselves in the pursuit of a better (less bitch) miata.

I'll start off: I dug a 1/2" deep by 2" long trench into the meat between my thumb and pointer when I was doing a bbk in 03 and still can find the scar. Another time I was helping a friend fix a fuel leak and his fuel line split and sprayed me in the eyes...what made this particular event extra shitty was I had gotten prk about a month prior.

Mach929 04-23-2010 09:20 PM

personally i haven't had anything major, just the usual cuts, burns, bruises, extreme soreness, charlie horse while holding a transmission under the car. however, since i've worked in a car dealership since 1997 i've seen some nasty shit. worst probably being a compressed spring coming loose and hitting tech in the head, thought he was dead, but wasn't, doesn't work anymore either.

turotufas 04-23-2010 09:33 PM

I too have had nothing major. Many cuts and bruises indeed.

I don't have a wire stripper so I use a razor. Not only is the bottom sharp but the top is also. By the time I'm finished with what ever, I have super deep cuts in the tips of my fingers. I can't feel it until it starts to heal. Don't know why I keep doing it. JDM I guess!

Edit: I remember something big. A hose clamp fucked my thumb up gooood.

NA6C-Guy 04-23-2010 09:33 PM

Same here, just typical cuts and bruises. The only one that you can really distinguish from the other scars is one on my thumb with oil in it. Nice 3/4'' long black scar. My other worst injuries have probably been environment related. Tripping over shit, hitting my head, pulling muscles lifting stuff way too heavy for one person.

Stealth97 04-23-2010 09:43 PM

A toolbox got dumped over in the shop once with a can of undercoating on it. I was standing by and the stuff was spraying on me, and before I knew it it seeped right through my pants, and stuck where I really did not want it to. Not an injury, but really sucked, typical scratches/burns otherwize.

I saw plenty of guys catch on fire, get hot coolant in their face, saw one guy fall out of a car on 6' in the air on a rack, because the guy was working under the dash of the car, and another guy thought it would be funny to raise it up while he was in there.

astroboy 04-23-2010 09:50 PM

That's pretty messed up! I would have been belligerent with anger if that had happened to me.

thagr81 us 04-23-2010 10:41 PM

While changing the front driverside coilovers out, I rested my hand in the brake rotor. The rotor turned and all four of my knuckles on that hand got sliced open pretty bad by the dust shield. I wrapped them in electrical tape, finished up, and went out to the bar. True story...

boileralum 04-23-2010 10:55 PM

I have a circular scar on top of my right hand from the bastard little coolant barb under the thermostat housing when I did the timing belt job on my 94. Pretty much like taking a little biscuit cutter of skin out.

browning 04-23-2010 10:59 PM

not my accident but the guys down the street. we were watching tv one night heard a huge explosion and felt our house shake. i jumped up looked out the window seen a fire balled 250 300 foot in the air.
apparenty they were changing a fuel pump out and had an open flame it caught there shop on fire which had a 1000 gallon fuel tank in it when that sucker went it leveled the shop put most of the roof in a wood area over 100 foot away and damn near burned everything around it to the ground.

JasonC SBB 04-23-2010 11:19 PM

I was getting out from under the car, and poked myself right in the center of my cornea with the pointy end of a ziptie that was sticking down. That sonombitch hurt - I went to the doc, got some drops, and it healed in 2 days.

adamhershner 04-23-2010 11:29 PM

Cut my fingers open with razors, hose clamps, screqdrivers, etc more times than I can count. Worst so far was a e-brake cable breaking, the car rolled and pinned my leg to the garage wall. Didn't brake any bones, but it hurt for a few weeks.

lordrigamus 04-23-2010 11:39 PM

I was lifting the head off my motor and pulled a muscle in my groin but after 45 minutes of rubbing and caressing, it felt way better!

rider384 04-24-2010 12:36 AM

A rapidly decompressing spring nailed me in the hand and then in the back of my head.

I also had a piece of an oil drain line stuck on my hand; I had to be sedated and it took 3 men to rip it off (It was too big to cut with the cutters). Took a good chunk of my finger with it too.

thirdgen 04-24-2010 01:41 AM

I decided it was a quicker idea to grind something by holding it in my hand instead of clamping it in a vise. The grinder slipped and hit my hand. I didn't feel it until the next morning when it was a burn blister.

Turbo_4 04-24-2010 02:59 AM

Hit my thumb with a hammer one time and completely ripped the nail off.

Pen2_the_penguin 04-24-2010 03:36 AM

once a wire wheel piece lodged itself 2 inches in my arm, punched/burned a hole in my palm with a tig welder, I once grabbed a very hot part of my go-kart where I forgot I just welded there, I fucking hate SS braiding, drill slipped and went into my finger, hose clamps have a hidden evil, someone else's cut-off wheel in auto tech exploded and a piece found its way into my leg... I have many things I can remember, car or no car relation.

Edit: didnt realize it was just miata related, well 5 of those happened working on the miata... also I dropped a rotor on my hand, while trying to pry it off... slices in my hand from vigurously grabbing the top lip of the firewall, slices in my hand from edges of the fenders, skinned my knuckles many times with a wrench slipping in blind spots...

jedduh01 04-24-2010 09:03 AM

No one ever wants to admit their stupid wrenching mistakes, but i sure can share a good one.

I work in Car dealerships. BMW had a rule... if we had a Cat faliure, you would cut the cat out of the pipe, and send just the cat to BMW for warranty. Basically they didnt want the extra pipe to go along with the shipment.

SOO our technician thought of the easy way to cut the cat out of the pipes. He left it mounted under the car, got out his HUGE 8 Inch grinder, with a cutoff wheel in it... With the car up in the air above him, he proceeded to grind / cut thru the pipes. The rear pipe went great, but the front one, once almost cut thru, binded on the cutoff wheel. KICKED BACK like a MOFO. and poped right out onto his FACE...

Needless to say... SPLIT HIS NOSE , UPPER LIP, BOTTOM LIP, AND CHIN PRETTY WIDE OPEN. It wasnt HORRIBLE< could have been alot worse, but still busted open, 6 months later left with scar top to bottom.

New dealership rule... when cutting exhaust pipes. USE SAWZAW in VICE.

revlimiter 04-24-2010 10:43 AM

I punched myself in the eye with the pointy end of a crowbar once. Well, eye socket. .25" lower and it would have been bad.

I was trying to pry a rear shock/spring out while changing suspension myself. I suddenly thought a crowbar would be the best thing ever. Pry................ It comes free!!!! all that springy force goes right into my face. I actually fell over. Blood gushed.

Yeah, I damn near knocked myself out and blinded myself. lol.

I am older and smarter now.

Bond 04-24-2010 10:53 AM

Not miata related, but one time I had a t56 land on my face. Never again....

browning 04-24-2010 11:46 AM

ok guys this is a nasty wrenching accident if your sqiumish DONT CLICK!!!http://warbirdinformationexchange.or...357291#p357291

Set the back of my fingers across a hot soldering iron last week while assembling my DIYPNP. They look nasty. I Keep forgetting to put gloves on while working on my transmission replacement. It feels really good to scrub the oil out of those open wounds with that orange hand cleaner (with pumice.)

kotomile 04-24-2010 11:53 AM

When I was helping body drop my brother-in-law's truck, I cut my left index finger open with an angle grinder. Needed stitches and I got Vicodin out of the deal.

My dad once managed to shove a philip's head through his left hand, in bx the thumb and forefinger and out between his middle and ring fingers. It was gnarly.

Miata related- Was removing an exhaust and was holding it with one hand while working with the other. Asked someone there to hold the exhaust up because it was ready to come off. He didn't and the exhaust pivoted down and the converter caught me in the temple/above my eye. It was a pretty damn hard hit, split skin...blood..the usual...and a bad headache. I'm pretty careful when it comes to working on my car.

Non-Miata: Hold your eyes....

Severed Achilles tendon. Skid plate fell off a 4Runner and landed on the back of my leg, just above my shoe and cut the tendon clear across (left/right- You can see what is left of the original cut...but when it happened it was 3x longer...it was pretty healed up by this time). This was taken on the day I got the staples taken out from the surgery they had to do to repair the tendon...which involved opening up the back of my leg to cut the muscle to relieve tension.

JasonC SBB 04-24-2010 12:17 PM

I was under the BMW removing its oil pan, prying it free from its RTV. POP! And the end of it lands right in the middle of my forehead. Despite the pain I had to laugh at my own stupidity. No blood but folks were asking me for days how I got the unicorn bruise.

the doctor that sewed it up at the ER pulled some of the fat tissue that was gushing out and said "Thats free lipo suction"
he thought it was hilarious

Still have the scar, and parts of that finger are still numb.

I learned my lesson, always use the vice.

therieldeal 04-24-2010 12:21 PM

don't own a miata, but i'll contribute anyway...

while working on my 73 vw beetle YEARS ago, i had was trying to loosen a very tight, rusty screw. while applying all the pressure i could muster, my philips screwdriver slipped.... ans i stabbed/sliced myself in the wrist. it went "down the road, not across the tracks"... nice scar from that one, everyone who sees it assumes i'm an emo kid though :(

wayne_curr 04-24-2010 12:38 PM

Man that airliner mechanic story is fucked up O_O

I haven't had anything super bad. A couple months ago I was feeling for an exhaust leak around my turbine and bumped the back of my hand against the manifold. It smoked and sizzled and smelled kind of good.

WOW.... just looked at the link......speechless.

Savington 04-24-2010 02:32 PM

I have a scar the size of a guitar pick on my right wrist from my gokart exhaust. Picked it up during an enduro pit stop so someone else could lube the chain and either didn't notice that I was pressing my wrist firmly into the end of the exhaust, or knew and the adrenaline allowed me to not care as much as I probably should have.

2nd degree burns across the whole thing, down several layers of skin. The scab took 3 months to heal.

I don't have anything super gory from the Miata, but the number of small scars on my hands from random cuts and scrapes is getting to be comical.

Project84 04-24-2010 02:46 PM

My two most painful mistakes.

5" knotted SS wire wheel on an angle grinder... I was laying under the car holding it in 1 hand after using it and was resting it up against my stomach. I stretched out using my other hand to remove something and accidentally hit the trigger.

The grinder "bit" into my shirt and twisted me up, basically knotting my skin up with the t-shirt. Megahella painful.

Not working on a car - same type of situation:

Dewalt 18v cordless with a 3/8" tap bit in the chuck... I thought I had the trigger set to lock and I was holding it with my forearm, kind of in my elbow. Bent down to pick something up and same fucking deal... hit trigger, drill bit tied me up. Jesus fuck.

swimming108 04-24-2010 03:48 PM

when i was welding the exhaust up a couple weeks back. I was under the car and a hot cinder fell into my ear canal. I threw down the gloves, welding mask, and rolled out from under the car.........Then i realized that i was sitting on the welder! My buddy holding the exhaust for me was laughing his ass off while i was holding mine.

I pulled the chunk of welding wire out of my left ass cheek which left a dime sized third degree burn. The cinder that fell in my ear canal is still there i guess, and i can hear from it just fine.

You're gonna want to get that removed!!!

I had a cinder fall into the tongue of my work boot last year and burned through my sock and by the time I could untie my laces and pull the boot off it was already sizzling skin. There's a big nasty purple dot over my left foot now.

mazpr 04-24-2010 09:51 PM

I thread about injuries without pics its a FAIL.

18psi 04-24-2010 09:56 PM

Criticizing a thread when you haven't contributed jack shit is even more FAIL fuckass

NastyNate 04-24-2010 10:06 PM

I did this last week so it's fairly healed by now. One way or another, I paid for those Racelands....

I know when I hurt myself when working on my car I don't think "I should take a pic of that so I can post a pic online." Generally I put some tape on it and keep going.

turotufas 04-24-2010 11:27 PM

I get a little pissed, wipe my face, turn the music up, keep working.

But if I did have pictures of all my injuries, it be sick. Bat to the head, bike handle through the leg, dog to the face, drain hole to the toe. I think I cried on that last one, probably not. I'm a man.
