Hyper-Fest @ Summit Point, WV

I live under a rock so I just found about this.

In a nutshell, $40 for 20 minutes of track time on the Jefferson circuit (small one), plus $20 entry fee to the festival itself. I'm a total noob so this sounds great to me. Instructors included.

Is anyone else going?

Hyper-fest is a blast. I have been many many times. Check and see if there are still spots open for the hyper drive. I know the actual HPDE that weekend is full.

soviet 06-13-2011 04:44 PM

Awesome! Yeah I already registered for the hyper drive. I'm a noob so that works for me.

Jeff_Ciesielski 06-13-2011 04:49 PM

I saw the word "Hyper" in the title and the only thing I could think was:
"FUCK, that idiot has a car show?"

turotufas 06-13-2011 10:16 PM

Kinda jealous of my friends that are fortunate enough to attend. :(

I giggled to my self thinking the same thing.

Faeflora 06-15-2011 01:26 AM

i would go but i don't have brakes.

Who wants to do drag races right outside the venue?

I do not think the roads are straight enough or have enough room to do drag races outside of Summit Point. Also there will be way to much traffic. Also you will have fun even if you are not driving. So many things are going there at any point in time.

If i would not spend over $200 in gas to get there and back I would be going for the weekend.

Faeflora 06-15-2011 09:39 AM

I was totally kidding about the drag racing :)

I might head up on Saturday..

miatacross 06-15-2011 11:16 AM

I'll be there for saturday. I was really hoping to be going there with all my turbo shizz on but I'll still be n/a due to lack of time.

bearda 06-15-2011 03:34 PM

I'll be up there on Saturday, and I'm registered for one of the Hyperdrives. I'm still a bit confused about the deal with the Hyperdrives, though, as it seems like you don't get a time slot until you show up at the info booth.

pretty much. I'll be there at 8am like normal autocross.

Faeflora 06-16-2011 11:39 AM

I might come out for sightseeing.

Sean 06-16-2011 12:38 PM

I am totally going to this. Faeflora hit me up and let me know when you wanna head up. I am not gonna miss out on this shit.

Was fairly awesome.

Pluses:
  • Driving on the track was awesome.
  • It was cheap
  • Car made it home
  • Jefferson Curcuit area was organized
  • Watching HPDE-4 group made me want to get filthy rich. Seriously, I couldn't even get decent tracking shots of those cars they were so stupid fast.

Minuses:
  • The rest of the place was a zoo
  • Way too many half & fully retarded cars. Hella flush stance stickers. Yeah.
  • Some ---- stole my GPS receiver. FML what are they going to do with it? Some kid probably thought it was a radar detector.
  • Alternator died. Speedometer cable got lose from the transmission. 3rd gear syncrhos sound like they are dying, but not really sure. It's odd.

Review sounds about right for Hyper-Fest. Did you get to go back to the paddock any for the main track? If you are interested in spending more time out there at the track, check out this thread on miata.net. There are a number of NoVA locals who are out at the track almost every weekend doing things. So if you want to become more involved you can.

Faeflora 06-19-2011 10:52 AM

I had a great time. I have been missing out. Driving on the track looks like sooooo much fun. The lemons race was AWESOME. The owner of the green fancy car was a prick. The drift competion was pretty cool but sorry folks, doing it on the street is more fun.

I want to start tracking my car NOW

The crowd was about 20% cool car people and 80% skanky trailer trash.

Fun time!

Nah I was rather pissed at niggers jacking my shit, so didn't feel like leaving my car unattended. Someone would have probably jacked my hardtop :vash:

I'll get more involved once I marry some old money or something. Actually in all honesty next thing will either be a HPDE with Nasa or Friday at the Track thing.

Also summit point tech inspection was a joke. Every single autocross I've attended had a more through inspection

bearda 06-19-2011 01:41 PM

Had a great time at Hyperfest yesterday, even though soviet is dead-on about it being crowded as hell and full of questionable taste (both the show cars and in the parking lot).

The track time was awesome and makes me fear for my bank account. It seems like I'll be getting new brake pads sooner than expected, as whatever NAPA pads the previous owner put on just didn't inspire a lot of confidence after 20 minute of hard braking. I don't think the car would have stood up to a longer session without major fade.

A Chatterbox communicator is going on my list of stuff to get soon, too. There were a couple times with the open top I couldn't hear shut that the instructor was saying. Worse still, there was one time where I only heard half of what he said, and when "Don't stop" sounds like "Stop" when someone has an off-track experience in front of you it's a jarring experience for a few seconds.

Braineack 06-19-2011 01:50 PM

MY dad was out there this weekend. Once I found out it was hyperfest weekend, i decided not to tag along :)

It's the instructor's responsibility to provide the communicator, not the student's. The vast majority of instructors have them but occasionally you will run into someone who, despite getting a few dozen hours of free track time throughout the year, is still too cheap to spend the $100.

NASA events are generally good but Hyperfest in particular is a damn zoo, I ran in HPDE last year. You're supposed to have a sticker to get into the main paddock, to limit it to track cars and one tow vehicle & trailer if necessary so there's enough room. Of course, they didn't police the stickers so there was too much extra bullshit allowed in there. People had to paddock all the way down in the grass to Turn 1 (usually it's only motorhomes & campers down there) and partially in the woods. It's kind of annoying when you come in from a session to find some TT driver's entourage of non-track-participating forum fanboys and their 4 extra cars parked on top of the area you have clearly set up with your chairs, tools and whatnot. But at least I didn't have anything stolen.

The Hyperfest girls last year weren't even that hot. Mostly butterfaces, a few decent looking bodies but a lot of chunky ones too, and the skank factor was sky high, as if NASA just went into whatever strip club they could find in Podunk WV on a Wednesday night and asked who wanted to work a car show that weekend. There were some hot girl-next-door looking chicks in the crowd, but they were a small minority.

stinkycheezmonky 06-20-2011 11:14 PM

I was there. One of the better Hyperfests I've been to, and I've been going on and off since '00 or so. I parked either right up front by the main gate or way back in the woods near the main track. No theft problems, although this event in particular has the most ever for the year.

It was really nice not instructing or driving in the event for a change. Got to hang out with the racers and hit up the kart track. Also drove in the karting enduro Saturday night, which was a lot of fun despite all the rain.

Faeflora 06-20-2011 11:38 PM

Stinkycheezmonky, what car are you driving now? Turbo miata?

I could use some instruction when I start driving on the track this July.

soviet 06-21-2011 12:30 AM

I think I disliked it partially because I had no idea what was going on. Took me like an hour to find & get my hyperdrive tickets.

your car will break :giggle:
I might go to Trackdaze but I'm scared of my transmission taking a shit. 4 hours of track time though

What events do you have lined up?

nothing really lined up except autox on sat and sunday. on saturday event you can actually register twice (second time is $10 off!) and do 12 runs instead of just 6. I might do that.

for actual track I'm pretty poor. Choice was between Friday at the Track in August vs Trackdaze. Trackdaze seems like a way, way way better deal especially since I have friends in Winchester to bum a couch :makeout:

stinkycheezmonky 06-21-2011 11:07 AM

Just an NA Miata currently, won't be track-ready for some time. Sold/parted out my caged Civic that I'd been using for the last few years. Unfortunately, I'm also hanging up the instructor jacket. I've been having inner-ear problems that lead to me easily getting nauseous when riding shotgun on track, to the point that I can't continue past maybe two sessions. I'd be happy to help from the sidelines though :) If my brother wasn't such a giant I'd recommend him, but he REALLY doesn't fit in Miatas.

If you sign up with NASA or Trackdaze though they'll give you a good instructor. They have a pretty solid group of people, with only a few not-so-good exceptions. Brian Maeng (sp) is an excellent instructor and had a Miata up until recently (now has an S2000). There are also a bunch of Spec Miata racers who instruct who would also be good. I don't personally know any turbo Miata instructors in the area, though there used to be a guy who had a supercharged one.

One thing about FATTs for you guys: you are NOT assigned a specific instructor. Typically you have 3-4 different ones over the course of the day. Some people enjoy this, some people find it hard adapting to 3-4 different teaching styles and showing the next one all over what you can do and what you need to work on. I am not a fan of that system, honestly, but track time is track time.

Also, +1 for the Hyperdrives/Shotgun rides thing being terribly disorganized. I found the booth just by chance walking around, and had actually been directed to a totally different/far away/wrong location prior to that. Missed out on getting my buddies signed up for Hyperdrives because of it... >:(

Soviet and Fae, what groups do you autocross with? I did want to take the new car out to one to shake it down/get used to it but don't want to mess with the huge crowds of the SCCA Fedex Field region. I remember there used to be events at Ripken Stadium, but don't know the org that runs it.

soviet 06-21-2011 07:27 PM

Trackdaze it is then.

I'm slow

capital driving club - http://www.capitaldrivingclub.com
mercedes club - http://www.gws-mbca.org

capital driving club gets about 70-100 cars per event and mercedes club is like, 30 tops. so latter is better but they only run once a month at most.

stinkycheezmonky 06-21-2011 09:05 PM

Cool, thanks. I have limited time anyway, so once/month isn't a problem. I'd rather get more runs on one day than anything else too.

I see MBCA has one this coming Sunday...interesting... Try to run on mismatched all-seasons/winters? Eh...I should probably wait a liiiittle longer :)

Faeflora 06-21-2011 10:35 PM

I was thinking about going to Saturday, June 25th, 2011 Autocross James Wood High School, Winchester, VA

stinkycheezmonky 06-22-2011 08:58 AM

I won't be able to go Saturday :(

stinkycheezmonky 06-26-2011 06:53 AM

Fae, did you wind up going? Beautiful weather yesterday. Unfortunately, my alignment was so bad after swapping the new shocks that I had like 2* of toe in on the passenger side and 1* on the driver's side. And my bushings/rust was so much worse that the alignment shop couldn't/wouldn't do anything :vash: So, new control arms on the way but the car is down for awhile :jerkit:

I did not go. I didn't have time to do my brakes :(

What kind of shocks did you get? I would like to trade in my KYB AGX. My GF's stock mazdaspeed suspension is much better, despite the extra body roll.

stinkycheezmonky 06-26-2011 02:44 PM

NB Bilsteins revalved to...something. 550/325 lb F/R springs. They came off a SM car, and feel WORLDS better than the Tokico Blues that were on the car before. The car won't steer for shit right now, but up to at least 35-40mph they feel fantastic :) :-P
