Miata Challenge: Round 10 at Infineon Raceway (10/9/2009)

Ok you NorCal people. I haven't seen a lot of you in a while since moving back to SoCal. I'm sure you all are itching for some friendly competition amongst each other and some of us SoCal people. Aside from Savington, I haven't seen any of you come to represent the NorCal drivers. Let's duke it out at Infineon!

Miata Challenge website: Miata Challenge
Register via Speed Ventures: Speed Ventures - Track Event Detailed Information

In case you don't know, Speed Ventures has prizes for podium finishers (1st-3rd) for each class (street, modified, unlimited). The prizes are in the form of credits for future Speed Ventures events, so that's all the more reason to come and take bragging rights.

more reasons to hate California.

I'll be there. I'll probably run in an intermediate group though. Last time I drove this track it was still called Sears point.

I just signed up for the 8th and 9th. Not sure if I want to embarrass myself by participating in the Miata Challenge, though.

Why feel embarrassed? What class will you be in? It's not like anyone's going to make fun of you or anything.

The MC is pretty low key. The intention was to give the average track day driver a place to hang out, share set up info, have some friendly competition and just have fun. No giant prize money, magazine covers, cable TV coverage etc,to attract big dollar teams. Just us.

There are no hard core racers in street class. With the exception of round 4's winner Margaret Chang, none of the mod class are racers.

Unlimited however, is an arms race. We currently have basically 4 of the 5 fastest track Miatas in the country battling for the series win.

They do in Dallas, lol.

We should seriously do this in Texas, we just need 3x the miata people. We have MSR-Houston, Harris Hill Road, Texas World Speedway, MSR-Cresson, Eagles Canyon, and Hallett. Unfortunately we have 2-5 idiots who will remain nameless that like to yell, scream, tell us how much money they have, and would unfortunately win most meetings. :( Also, no tracks here will permit open passing. You have to remember that in Texas you're classed by what car you drive, not skill or lap time.

That's unfortunate.

The car belongs in the unlimited class. The driver does not. :noes:

I live in the land of milk and litigation, and they won't allow open passing on Texas tracks?

:loser:

don't listen to hustler. they allow open passing in nasa time trials and hpde 4 (racecraft practice) at all those tracks he mentioned. i'm gonna be working on a challenge for 2010 season in texas. besides, other than your sparring sessions at the end of the day, it's basically like a time trial or time attack in the sense that best single lap time wins right? main problem is getting the track time. i need to talk to you emillio, about how you guys work with sv to do this. i see a problem getting insurance or using the insurance of a sanctioning body to allow us to do this. when my friends and i were in charge of the coastal bend pca, we would put on an event once a year called super lap. (blatant theft, minus the "battle" to keep from throwing up red flags) we did it to bring new people out. basically it ran just like any other pca de/tt event. only difference was that we would also class them according to a time attack type system. at the end of the day, we did timing like always, but afterwards we (voodoo racing, a car club of ours) and some sponsors we dug up, would hand out trophy's and some prizes to street, modified, and unlimited/super class winners. that's basically what's happening at TWS in a few weeks. only it's a covert operation. i might be able to get our pca (now in the valley) to host us. but they only rent out harris hills, and run at cameron county airport (really is a fun and fast track). i would wanna go to msr-c and h, ecr, and tws also. that might mean having to run nasa events at those tracks under hpde or time trial classes. they always run and rent amb transponders and print out time sheets after each session which would make it easy to keep score. i don't know, we'll see how many people show up for this event and gauge interest. would LOVE to go out to cali. though! i will at some point, hopefully sooner than later. btw hustler, i bet there's the same 4-5 people winning in cali too. that's why we need to make this happen. it's called "development".

Savington 09-28-2009 12:37 AM

I can name like 5 organizations, running 50+ events a year between them, where I can go to any of 6 tracks in the state and get 4-6 sessions of open passing. NASA is the only group in TX that does it?

thesnowboarder 09-28-2009 12:51 AM

Ill be attending as well.

yes, the 1-day per year that NASA rents your track you can do open passing. Don't listen to me, I don't know what I'm talking about.

my bad: i thought you were talking in regards to a miata challenge. you also said nobody allows open passing. there's probably more but that's just one i know of. i don't know how many challenge dates you would like but if you count each day of a nasa weekend separately plus say harris hills once or twice, you've got a whole season challenge of 14 trackdays. not sure what open passing has to do with miata challenge anyways. but if that's what you want, cage your car buy a hans and go wheel to wheel racing. besides, even though it wasn't policy, i've run in a bunch of advanced/instructors goups where we did open passing and nobody said anything as long as we kept it clean.
