Miata Challenge Round 9: Streets of Willow CCW (11/7/2010)

The 2010 season is drawing to a close as there are only 2 rounds left. Class leaders expect a good fight to the finish, as well as everyone else fighting for season point podium position.

Miata Challenge is headed back to its birthplace: Streets of Willow. Known to be great place for Miatas to zip through at a fast pace on a tight, very technical track and have an edge on even more modern machines. Especially with the SoCal winter arriving, expect the competition and times to be fast, maybe new records will be made in the heat of battle…

Round 8 @ Buttonwillow Summary:

Buttonwillow Raceway fails to disappoint as a great crowd of 19 competitors showed up despite the seasonal record breaking heat to the premier time attack track in CA to do battle, the most since the last Buttonwillow event in January.

If you think the heat would slow the Unlimited class guys down, think again. Both Andrew Kidd and Gordon Jennings managed blisteringly fast times in the 1:55 range in the blazing heat! A close battle indeed, but yet again, Andrew barely takes the cake as he posted a 1:55.804 lap time, only 0.126 seconds ahead of Gordon. A well fought battle by the fastest Miatas in the country today.

In Modified class, it was a full house as there were 9 competitors to claim points and none of them didn’t want to end up with 0 points for being last in class. In an ill twist of fate, Edward Krisher, currently 2nd in class and had a comfortable grip on his season points position, but ended up with brake system problems during Saturday’s practice day and couldn’t hold much speed to get any points on Sunday. A lucky break for Grant Heathman as he gets the points he needed to claw his way back to fight for 2nd place in season points. Now, Grant is in range to potentially overtake Edward in the next two rounds to win 2nd in class. Meanwhile, Brian Wood is now relaxing as he takes 1st at Buttonwillow and very well near clinches the Modified class title as he is only 1 point away from doing so.

In Street class, Sonny Watanasirisuk continued his winning streak with a convincing 2:11.317 lap time, despite the low probability of Derek Dicker conceding his leading season points position. Unless Derek either fails to compete, DNF, or finishes poorly for the next 2 rounds, he will most likely clinch the Street class title.

I'm impressed with how fast you make that pile go without an LSD.
