NY/NJ members...relocation ?'s

Hey so I moving back to siNY after almost 8yrs in Miami...

I know Saml01 is closeby to me (already setup to grab beers), and I know Paul is in NJ (would love to see those 2 crazy beasts) but not sure how far...

So anyone else up there??
How's the Miata community, even better performance community up there?

I met a bunch of local guys down here in Miami from this forum, and then grew into like 10-15 of us...very cool people
We've done crazzy tech days, drank some beers, and done a couple nice meet/cruise days. I wouldn't say we're a "club" of any sorts, just a bunch of Miata fanatics that help each other out an dchill once in a while...

Anything like that up in that area?? Mind you I moved away from NY pre-miata...so wasn't aware of any thing related...

disturbedfan121 11-06-2008 11:56 PM

i live 20 min closer to SI than paul

mike riv is in woodbridge, olderguy is in wayne. if you're moving back up here just join

miatamob.org its all us NY/NJ locals.

TonyV 11-06-2008 11:58 PM

niiiiiice, gonna check that out

woodbridge is like 15min from where I'll be on SI....,not sure where wayne is but NJ is all driveable distance..

paul 11-07-2008 12:04 AM

I'm within an hour of SI. Bryan(disturbedfan) may think he's 20's mins closer but his turbo Miata is off the road.

disturbedfan121 11-07-2008 01:38 AM

i am 20min closer, but yes my turbo miata is off the road, and because of that you have 2 running ones :)~

Saml01 11-07-2008 09:44 AM

What happened to your car Bryan?

I am in Brooklyn, thats 20 min from anywhere in SI. There's a guy, USJDMtuner, on miatamob and he's in SI, exit 13 I think it was.

TonyV 11-07-2008 10:07 AM

cool, plenty of local peeps then...

my car is down at the moment, gotta hunt down a coolant leak and haven't had a chance to work on it.

I just thought of something, here in FL there's no emissions...so I run no cat, removed my charcoal canister, and was going to remove whatever else I can...
What's the chances of me being able to get this car on the road up there as-is?

icantthink4155 11-07-2008 10:50 AM

Couple of us in western NY.

Not legally.

johndoe 11-07-2008 11:42 AM

the new york metro area has emissions standards pretty similar to California just without the CARB stuff.

TonyV 11-07-2008 03:56 PM

greaaaaat, guess i gotta find a "friend" that can give me a pass..
also, gotta see what to do about storage...as of now only spot I have is stree parking...not too happy bout that.

on the + side found some time today and looks like the car is running well again...need to take it for a decent drive to make sure

johndoe 11-07-2008 04:31 PM

you should come to the dyno day.

TonyV 11-07-2008 04:49 PM

yea I posted in that thread, unfortunately I wont be there till after Thanksgiving...
and the guys down here have one planned for early dec...which I will miss as well since i'll be up there....so that's 0 for 2

Good luck with that, 5 years ago I could have taken you to a handful of people that would do it. Today, yea right. In the SI/Brooklyn area the only ones who did it were either A. Russians or B. Italians that know you through Russians. You being a Yankee and with the serious crackdown of emissions fraud in NY, I highly doubt you are going to find a "friend".

If you have a check engine light, you are not going to pass. Simple.

I dont have a charcoal canister but I kept all the electronic stuff for it, and I kept my EGR. I also have a CAT.

I passed emissions last month, no problem.

But... I had my car scanned with the rear o2 monitor in INC(incomplete) status. Interestingly enough, I have never seen the rear o2 monitor come in as OK on my OBD scanner. So maybe the emissions computer doesnt check it.

TonyV 11-09-2008 01:47 PM

I'm OTB Italian man, so all good!

I guess I'll just figure it out once I'm up there... I might be leaving the car here for the winter and pick it up in March or so. I don't have any place to keep it except the street, and I really don't wanna do that... Unless I find somewhere indoors to stash it, I might have to part ways for a little while

You can always throw it in a storage unit.

TonyV 11-09-2008 06:37 PM

eh, gotta keep away from spending money.
Either I'll find a buddy w/ garage/warehouse, or it'll stay here in FL thru the winter...

evank 11-09-2008 07:29 PM

I'm here in NJ too but can't get no respect. :)

johndoe 11-09-2008 09:33 PM

I drive mine all year round. It was interesting the last two winters without boost. This winter should be even more interesting.

?

You have my address. Leave it tagged and registered here with my address and you wont have any issues. Plus you wont have to put a plate on the front of the car.

I hope he also turned in the plates before he took off the insurance. Registered + no insurance = big ut oh when you go to reinsure it.

why is that?

I'm no expert on insurance, but I am pretty sure you must have continuous coverage on all vehicles registered in your name. I got burned real bad a few years back when I first got my 323GTX. The car carrier company wouldn't ship a car w/o plates, so I went to the DMV and got 'em. I added the car to the policy 4 days later, while the car was still on the carrier from California. The insurance company wanted me to prove I had insurance on the car for those 4 days, which I didn't do cause...we'll I didn't even have the car yet. No good, and I was told having a lapse of coverage even for a day is the second worse thing you can do next to driving drunk with no license or insurance and crashing into a school bus. My rate went CRAZY (had Prudential at the time, now called Highpoint) and would have stayed high for a while (years). I bounced around a few different insurers afterwards (highpoint, then NJ Re, then NJ Cure, then Geico) and by the time I got to Geico less than a year later it didn't show up on my declarations page anymore.

If your case is similar and if the laws haven't changed, I would consider selling your car to someone, then buy it back ("gift" it to your parents or whatever). Get insurance before reregistering it. That might work. You could forge a bill of sale to before you took off insurance if the insurance company gets picky.

Or you can ignore all of this and hope your insurance company doesn't ask to see previous continuous coverage like Prudential did to me. Of all the other insurance companies I've had since, I can't recall any other asking to see that.

TonyV 11-10-2008 08:08 PM

^eh that really sucks, but I've taken cars on/off insurance plenty of times with no issue.

I do have other vehicles that stay insured, but for example whenever my Miata is on downtime, I call Geico and tell them to take it off. 2weeks, 2months w/e later, I simply call them again and tell them I want it on the policy again because I'm using it again.
And I'm honest about the whole thing, just tell them it's my 3rd car and only comes out to play once in a while.

What DOES suck, is that my other 2 cars have FULL coverage (leased/financed), and they told me I had to carry the same coverages on the Miata. Reason being that if I hit someone in the Miata, a good lawyer could go after them for more money because they are insuring my whole fleet...and chances are they'd win. So I have to pay full coverage on ALL cars, because basically it's better that I throw money down the drain for worthless coverage rather than them battling it out for what' right. (this is all per Gecio rep)

I think it's complete BS, and upon my move to NY will shop around for insurance to see whats up. As a last resort I may just insure the Miata with a seperate company than my DD's if thats possible.

That sounds like total bullshit, what shitty insurance company are you with?

From what I know, in 2008, if its a major insurance company, good luck suing for more then what the persons coverage is contracted to pay out.

The lawyers can come after you, but once the insurance company pays out the max's thats it.

TonyV 11-11-2008 01:27 PM

^Geico lol

I felt the same way, so I called back and was given the same explan. from a diff rep.

My renewal is coming due soon, so I'll take it up with them (management) again or switch.

levnubhin 11-11-2008 01:35 PM

You need to switch. I have full coverage on my Expidition and minimum coverage on my F-150 and Miata with Progressive.
